What Sharif had to say on Modi's China visit

The political significance of the Chinese official news agency Xinhua carrying a signed article by Nawaz Sharif, the Pakistani prime minister   an extraordinary gesture by itself on the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit to China will not go unnoticed here in Delhi.

At the very least, Beijing is reassuring Islamabad that Modis visit will not make an iota of difference to Chinas recent quantum jump in the relations with its Iron Friend (epithet used by President Xi Jinping during his visit to Pakistan last month.)

This is not exactly the sort of curtain-raiser for Modis visit that one would have expected. But then, it underscores, arguably, that China intends to de-hyphenate its relations with India and Pakistan.

Our pundits are still fixated with the thought that Chinas Pakistan policy is largely India-centric, whereas, the all-weather friendship between China and Pakistan is poised to assume a multi-regional and international character. Pakistan is becoming a crucial gateway for China to access the world market.
