23:28   PM leaves for China, to work out roadmap for upgrading ties
Prime Narendra Modi tonight left for China for a three-day visit, expressing confidence that his trip would deepen mutual trust, work out a roadmap for upgrading bilateral economic ties and set a "new milestone" for Asia and developing nations.

Modi, who is undertaking his first visit to China as Prime Minister, will reach the ancient city of Xi'an, the home town of President Xi Jinping, for a summit meeting, an unusual departure from normal protocol and seen as a reciprocal gesture by the Chinese leader who was hosted by Modi in Ahmedabad when he visited India in September last year.

"I am looking forward to the trip to China... the 21st century belongs to Asia," the Prime Minister told Chinese media ahead of his visit that will also take him to Mongolia and South Korea.

The prime minister, who is accompanied by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar and senior officials, hoped that his visit will "further deepen" India-China relations and set a "new milestone" for Asia and developing countries.

"I believe that my trip to China will not only deepen the China-India friendship, but also set a new milestone for the relations between developing countries in Asia as well as around the world. There is no doubt about that," he told state-run CCTV ahead of this visit.

A week after withdrawing resignation, Housing.com Chief Executive Rahul Yadav today in a surprise move decided to allot all his personal holding in the company worth Rs 150-200 crore to the employees.

Yadav justified the move saying, he is "just 26 and it's too early in life to get serious about money etc."

"Housing.com was started because of two reasons. The problems related to house hunting is unsolved globally. Across the globe there are over 500 players who aggregate the market data for buyers. We want to unify all those and create a global platform for real estate," he said.

Yadav had reportedly written a resignation letter on April 30 to the board and investors and questioning their "intellectual capability" and giving them a one-week deadline to "help in the transition". However, on May 5, he withdrew the resignation and apologised for his outbursts.

16:13   Unhappy with SAI clean chit athlete's mother threatens suicide
The mother (pictured) of one of the three athletes who attempted suicide has said she is unhappy with the probe and will attempt suicide unless the CBI takes over the investigation.

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has reportedly given a clean chit to its officials in connection with the death of a female athlete and suicide bids by three others at its centre in Kerala's Alappuzha district recently.

Fifteen-year-old Aparna, a budding rower, died last Thursday while three other girls remained critical after they ate a poisonous fruit.

According to media reports, an internal probe by the director general of SAI revealed that the girls attempted suicide but probably due to a feeling of guilt after consuming beer at the SAI centre.

The girls were advised by senior students and teachers after they revealed that they had beer. Their guilt might have driven them to the extreme step, the report said.

Reports suggested that a suicide note featuring the names of some senior students was found from the deceased.

There were reports that it was ragging and harassment from seniors and trainers that led to the suicide of the girl.

Government today gave its nod to a proposal allowing children below 14 years of age to work only in family enterprises or entertainment industry with certain conditions while completely banning their employment elsewhere.

In case of parents, the repeat offenders may be penalised with a monetary fine up to Rs 10,000. In case of first offence, the penalty for employers has been increased up to two and half times from the existing up to Rs 20 thousand to up to Rs 50,000 now. In case of a second or subsequent offence of employing any child or adolescent in contravention of the law, the minimum imprisonment would be one year which may extend to three years.

02:23   Why India's quake detectors are in coma since 8 months
If an earthquake were to hit India right now, let alone early warnings, scientists may even struggle to evaluate its scale and characteristics and also predict aftershocks.

The country's network of "ground-motion" detectors, the backbone of quake monitoring, has not been working for nearly eight months now due to a bureaucratic bottleneck, putting millions of lives at risk.

As the Nepal quake rippled across most of India, top geologists logged in to a designated website for data to analyse the event.

When they failed to find any data on the 7.9-magintude quake that set off in Lamjung, Nepal, they found that strong-motion detectors were lying idle.

02:06   US helicopter missing in Nepal with 8 aboard: military
A US Marine Corps helicopter carrying out earthquake relief in Nepal was reported missing today with eight personnel on board, officials said.

"The incident occurred near Charikot, Nepal while the aircraft was conducting humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations," said Major Dave Eastburn, spokesman for US Pacific Command.

The UH-1Y Huey had just dropped off supplies and was headed to another destination, officials said.

Before the chopper went missing, there was "some chatter about a fuel problem" on the radio from the helicopter crew, Pentagon spokesman Colonel Steven Warren said.

A search by US aircraft before nightfall had not spotted any sign of smoke or any crash site, raising hopes the helicopter may have made a safe emergency landing, he said.

The Nepalese army was conducting a search on the ground but no aircraft could fly until daylight to look for the crew.

There was so far no beacon signal detected from the helicopter crew, officials said. The chopper was carrying six US Marines and two soldiers from the Nepalese army, officials said.

About 300 US military troops have deployed to support the relief effort in Nepal, where aftershocks continue to claim lives after last month's massive quake.

02:06   Priyanka Chopra cast in ABC drama Quantico
Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra is heading to American television with a lead role in the ABC drama Quantico.

"Wow. I'm still reeling," she said last night at a party to celebrate the presentations in New York this week where networks unveil new programming to advertisers.

"Quantico was my first pick out of everything ABC sent me ... and I got it, so I was like, 'and it got picked up,' so it all happened so fast. I just hope it's amazing and people love it."

Chopra plays an FBI trainee at Quantico Base in Virginia.

"All of (the FBI agents) have secret pasts and something happens where one of us is blamed and then I have to find out who did it," she laughed, adding that there's "a lot of drama and all the fun, of course."

"American TV is at the best place it has ever been. It has incredible content," she said.

02:02   What Sharif had to say on Modi's China visit
The political significance of the Chinese official news agency Xinhua carrying a signed article by Nawaz Sharif, the Pakistani prime minister   an extraordinary gesture by itself on the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit to China will not go unnoticed here in Delhi.

At the very least, Beijing is reassuring Islamabad that Modis visit will not make an iota of difference to Chinas recent quantum jump in the relations with its Iron Friend (epithet used by President Xi Jinping during his visit to Pakistan last month.)

This is not exactly the sort of curtain-raiser for Modis visit that one would have expected. But then, it underscores, arguably, that China intends to de-hyphenate its relations with India and Pakistan.

Our pundits are still fixated with the thought that Chinas Pakistan policy is largely India-centric, whereas, the all-weather friendship between China and Pakistan is poised to assume a multi-regional and international character. Pakistan is becoming a crucial gateway for China to access the world market.

02:02   What's happening with India's tank force?
The majority of Indias indigenously developed third generation Arjun main battle tanks have been grounded due to technical issues and missing spare parts, Defense News reported last week.

Originally supposed to enter service in the Indian Army in the 1980s, the Arjun MK-I program has witnessed repeated delays due to an inadequate design concept (e.g. too much heavy armor versus too little horsepower) partially based on the German Leopard II main battle tank and a flawed procurement and testing process.

Defense News quotes an Indian official who stated that nearly 75 percent of the 124 [Arjun] tanks with the Army are grounded. All in all there are more than 90 technical issues. The problems in the Arjun tank are mainly confined to its transmission system, targeting and thermal sights, the defense official noted.

Originally, more than 50 percent of components of the tank were imported, but this percentage has gradually diminished as various parts have been replaced by indigenous designed systems.

02:01   How the world's first openly gay prince is fighting for LGBT rights in India
In 2006, the Crown Prince of one of India's oldest royal families made a public announcement that made headlines around the world: the 40-year-old formerly married Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil was actually gay.

This announcement made Prince Manvendra the world's only openly gay prince -- and it also outraged his community and ripped his family apart.

His father refused to accept the Prince's homosexuality, and his mother, the Queen, took out an ad in the newspaper to publicly disown her only son.

What's more, Prince Manvendra was also risking his own freedom, as homosexual acts in his country were punishable by 10 years to life in prison.

Still, Prince Manvendra remained determined to live in his truth.
