The Jalandhar police booked Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, for his alleged controversial remarks against freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. The case was registered against Gandhi under Section 295 (A) (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class) of the IPC after a complaint by the chairman of an NGO, Jan Jagriti Manch, Kishan Lal Sharma.

It was alleged that Gandhi, while speaking to the media in Jaipur earlier, had said that "Mahatma Gandhi did not intervene in Bhagat Singh's death sentence as the freedom fighter was a criminal for the British rulers".
