22:01   Court dismisses plea against Modi in poll code breach case
A local court in Ahmedabad today dismissed an application which had sought action against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for violation of election-related laws during last year's Lok Sabha elections.

Chief judicial magistrate, Ahmedabad rural court, S R Sinh, rejected the petition filed by Nishant Verma, a worker of the Aam Aadmi Party. "Records produced before this court do not reveal any material necessary for taking cognisance," the order said.

"The investigation (by detection of crime branch of city police)...is just and proper...no prima facie case against any accused is made out," the court said.

On April 30, 2014, as the voting for 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat was still underway, PM Modi -- then BJP's prime ministerial candidate -- addressed the press immediately after casting his own vote at a school in Ahmedabad's Ranip area. He also took selfies with the party symbol lotus.

21:42   The many problems with Seymour Hersh's Osama conspiracy theory
On Sunday, the legendary investigative journalist Seymour Hersh finally released a story that he has been rumored to have been working on for years: the truth about the killing of Osama bin Laden.

According to Hersh's 10,000-word story in the London Review of Books, the official history of bin Laden's death is a lie.

Hersh's story is amazing to read, alleging a vast American-Pakistani conspiracy to stage the raid and even to fake high-level diplomatic incidents as a sort of cover. But his allegations are largely supported only by two sources, neither of whom has direct knowledge of what happened, both of whom are retired, and one of whom is anonymous, says Max Fisher in his piece published on vox.com

The story is riven with internal contradictions and inconsistencies. It simply does not hold up to scrutiny.

21:31   Prince Harry says he wants kids 'right now'
Britain's Prince Harry today spoke out about his yearning for love and a family with children like his older brother, Prince William.

"Of course I would love to have kids right now but there's a process that one has to go through and tours like this are great fun. Hopefully I'm doing all right by myself," he said in an interview with Sky News during his ongoing tour of New Zealand.

"It would be great to have someone else next to me to share the pressure, but you know, time will come and whatever happens, happens," he added.

The royal, who was pushed down to fifth in line to Britain's throne by his new niece Princess Charlotte, is on a week-long tour of the Commonwealth nation before he returns to the UK. "There come times when you think now is the time to settle down, or now is not, whatever way it is, but I don't think you can force these things, it will happen when it's going to happen," the prince said.

The 30-year-old bachelor recently retired from the armed forces after completing a month-long attachment with the Australian defence force and will focus voluntary work in the coming months. He said he was looking forward to returning home to hold the new princess.

21:15   White House on Hersh report: Osama raid 'US operation through & through'
The White House is dismissing as "baseless" a controversial report alleging President Barack Obama's administration lied about the circumstances surrounding the 2011 killing of Osama bin Laden, CNN reports.

"There are too many inaccuracies and baseless assertions in this piece to fact check each one," White House National Security spokesman Ned Price said in a statement to reporters.

He took aim specifically at journalist Seymour Hersh's assertion that the administration collaborated with Pakistani officials to kill the Al Qaeda leader, saying that "the notion that the operation that killed Osama Bin Laden was anything but a unilateral US mission is patently false."

"As we said at the time, knowledge of this operation was confined to a very small circle of senior US officials. The president decided early on not to inform any other government, including the Pakistani government, which was not notified until after the raid had occurred," Price said.

"We had been and continue to be partners with Pakistan in our joint effort to destroy the Al Qaeda, but this was a US operation through and through."

It was the White House's first response to Hersh's stunning report, published this weekend in the London Review of Books, outlining what he describes as the true circumstances surrounding Laden's death.

Prior to this, it had asked the SIT to consider suggestions of senior advocate Ram Jethmalani, who had filed a PIL in 2009 on the black money issue, on the way forward to bring the illegal money stashed in banks abroad.

The court had also said that the SIT, after considering the suggestions in accordance with law, would be sending "a copy of its report to that effect" in a sealed cover to the apex court.

19:59   Govt to soon bring bill to curb benami transactions
A new Benami bill, aimed at curbing generation of domestic black money, will soon be brought before the Cabinet, government told the Lok Sabha
today.

"As regards the Benami Bill, the redrafted Act is at a very advanced stage... A more modern Benami bill has been drafted. It will reach the Cabinet any day," Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said.

Apart from confiscation, the Bill would provide for prosecution and would aim to act as a major avenue for blocking generation and holding of black money in the form of benami property, especially in real estate.

Jaitley said the inclusion of the parallel economy of black money into the main economy, would help government to lower tax rates.

"The need to curb domestic black money is extremely important. We need to bring slowly more and more of our economy into declared economy. This has ability to bring up tax collection, GDP, enables to help the government to bring down the taxation.

Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud will no longer be in attendance at President Barack Obama's meetings with Arab leaders from the Gulf Cooperation Council this week.

The late change of plans, could be seen as a snub to Obama, coming just four days before the start of two days of sessions beginning Wednesday and culminating in a Camp David summit on Thursday.

"We first learned of the King's possible change of plans from the Saudis on Friday night," said a senior administration official. "This was confirmed by the Saudis on Saturday. We coordinated closely with our Saudi partners on the alternate arrangement and timing of the announcement, and look forward to welcoming Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef and Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman."

The Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in a statement acknowledged the King's absence was "due to the timing of the summit, the scheduled humanitarian ceasefire in Yemen and the opening of the King Salman Center for Humanitarian Aid."

19:37   Black money bill gets cleared in Lok Sabha
The undisclosed foreign income and assets bill 2015 has been passed in Lok Sabha. The bill, which provides for penalty and tax up to 120 percent along with criminal prosecution for those who have parked black money abroad, was passed in the Lower House of Parliament.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who moved the bill in the Lok Sabha, asked the opposition not to develop 'cold feet' in supporting the legislation.

Jaitley rejected the demands of the opposition parties to refer it to the Standing Committee.

Jaitley added that delay in enacting the legislation would provide opportunity to offenders to transfer unaccounted overseas wealth to unknown destinations.

The bill provides for rigorous imprisonment of up to 10 years for offenders.

"Innocents are not the target," Finance Minister Arun Jaitely said in response to criticisms of the undisclosed foreign income and assets (imposition of tax) bill 2015.

"In India there are businesses, and people feel that transacting in black is their right," Jaitley said in Lok Sabha.

19:19   Pope changes Raul Castro's mind on religion
Cuba has eased its persecution of religion in the last 23 years, but there have been few overtures suggesting the country's executive office might be finding its faith.

That changed Sunday when President Raul Castro said the teachings of Pope Francis had persuaded him not only to take a softer line on religion, but perhaps to return to the Catholic Church and begin worshipping again as he once did, growing up in Jesuit schools.

"As I've already told my council of advisers, I read all of the pope's speeches," he said. "If the Pope continues to speak like this, sooner or later I will start praying again and I will return to the Catholic Church -- and I'm not saying this jokingly."

Appearing in Rome alongside Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi following his first-ever meeting with the pope, Castro said he would be among the throngs flocking to see the pope speak during his September visit to Cuba.

"I promise that I will go to all of his Masses -- and with satisfaction. I left the meeting this morning impressed, very impressed by his knowledge, his wisdom, modesty, and by all the virtues that we know he has," Castro said.
