The media controversy that has erupted over the India-Pakistan joint statement issued at Ufa, Russia, following the meeting between the two prime ministers last Friday, has a familiar ring about it, but is all the same tragi-comic.

Why tragedy? Because, the India-Pakistan diplomatic history is littered with unborn fetuses. The ease with which L.K. Advani and camp follower Sushma Swaraj (who was the then Minister for Information) could derail the Agra Summit between Prime Minister A. B. Vajpayee and President Pervez Musharraf is useful to recall.
