23:30   Iraq seeks 'uninterrupted' Turkish military support against IS
Iraq's foreign minister today sought "uninterrupted" military support from neighbouring Turkey in its fight against jihadists from the Islamic State group.

"The presence of Daesh constitutes a threat not only to Iraq but also to countries in the region as well as Turkey," Ibrahim al-Jaafari told a joint news conference in Ankara with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, using a pejorative name for IS.

"We expect uninterrupted military support... from brotherly country Turkey. Cooperation will benefit us all," he said.

Iraq is battling to retake areas of the country overrun by IS militants. Authorities announced a major offensive on Monday to "liberate Anbar", a vast province that is largely under IS control.

"Daesh must be wiped out," Jaafari said in remarks translated into Turkish.

"In order to do this, we need arms and training ... There is a need for a well-trained soldiers and police. A hit-and-run war is taking place right now. You are not fighting a regular army. That's a difficult part of the business," he added.

22:44   UN: civilian death toll in Yemen rises above 1,600
At least 142 civilians have been killed in Yemen over the past 10 days, bringing the civilian death toll in more than three months of violence to 1,670, the United Nations said today.

Air strikes and ground fighting have continued despite a UN-brokered truce between Shiite rebels known as Houthis and Yemen's internationally backed exiled government and its allies.

A Saudi-led coalition that in March began launching airstrikes against the rebels has said it isn't bound by the truce because of a lack of commitment by the Houthis.

Rupert Colville, a spokesman for the UN human rights office, said in Geneva that at least 142 civilians were killed in Yemen between July 3 and yesterday and another 224 were injured. That included a total of 76 deaths and 38 injuries in a pair of airstrikes on markets July 6.

The latest numbers bring the total killed since March 26 to 1,670, while 3,829 civilians have been injured, Colville said.

Separately, the UN refugee agency said that some 10,500 people have arrived in Yemen by sea since March 26 bringing to over 37,000 the total so far this year, among them Ethiopians, Somalis and others. Many have been tricked into making the crossing by smugglers who told them the conflict in Yemen is over, it said.

In a rebuff to Pakistan, Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani has rejected the invite from Pakistan High Commissioner for an Eid Milan party on July 21.

Hurriyat says that the decision to "boycott" the function has been taken in protests against dropping of K-word during talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif in Russia.

"It is sad that there was no mention of Kashmir in the recent meeting of Indo-Pak Prime Ministers," Hurriyat spokesman Ayaz Akbar quoted Geelani as saying.

"As a symbolic protest against it Hurriyat has decided to boycott the function. The Pakistan High Commissioner in New Delhi Abdul Basit has invited separatist leaders from Kashmir for a get together in the capital.

The High Commission, earlier, had invited the separatist leaders for an Iftar party on July 4 but later cancelled it. The reason for canceling the invite, sources say, was the scheduled Modi-Sharif meeting in Russia.

16:54   Iranian nuclear deal is NOT built on trust, but on verification: Obama
US President Barack Obama speaking on the Iran nuclear deal: All of Iran's pathways to a nuclear weapon cut off in landmark deal, says Obama. The Iranian nuclear deal is not built on trust, it is built on verification, said the US president. The Iran Deal makes the world a safer place and the US will veto any legislation that is against it, Obama said.

After tortuous talks that spanned 20 months, negotiators reached a landmark deal aimed at reining in Iran's nuclear program. The agreement, a focal point of US President Barack Obama's foreign policy.

The nuclear agreement included a compromise between Washington and Tehran that would allow UN inspectors to press for visits to Iranian military sites as part of their monitoring duties. But access at will to any site would not necessarily be granted and even if so, could be delayed, a condition that critics of the deal are sure to seize on as possibly giving Tehran time to cover any sign of non-compliance with its commitments.

Under the deal, Tehran would have the right to challenge the UN request and an arbitration board composed of Iran and the six world powers that negotiated with it would have to decide on the issue.

Still, such an arrangement would be a notable departure from assertions by top Iranian officials that their country would never allow the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency into such sites.

Iran has argued that such visits by the IAEA would be a cover for spying on its military secrets.

16:46   'Op Talaash' for missing CG Dornier ends, human remains recovered
Thirty-five days after a Coast Guard aircraft on a surveillance sortie disappeared off the Chennai coast with three crew, the search operation has been "terminated" after recovery of human remains, parts of the plane and personal effects.

"Eighty per cent of the aircraft's parts have been retrieved, besides human bones and wrist watches from the sea bed," I G Coast Guard S P Sharma said here today, adding the search operation was "terminated" last night.

The authorities have called the families of the crew for carrying out DNA tests for identification of the deceased and collecting the remains and personal effects.

The Coast Guard was in consultation with the Tamil Nadu Forensic and Science Laboratory to carry out the DNA tests. On July 11, 33 days after the Dornier aircraft vanished over the sea off Tamil Nadu coast on June 8, its debris and the flight data recorder (FDR) were located 950 metres under water.

Reliance Industries vessel 'Olympic Canyon' and a submarine from National Institute Of Ocean Technology were involved in the operation.

A massive search and rescue operation had been quickly mounted by Indian warships and planes for the missing aircraft and crew comprising pilot S Vidhya Sagar, co-pilot Subash Suresh and observer M K Soni soon after it had gone off the radar.

Along with an INS submarine, a total of eight ships and aircraft had been pressed into action during 'Operation Talaash', described by Coast Guard as "first ever salvage at such depths".

"As the events unfold in terms of decoding the Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit Voice Recorder and establishing the identity of the crew, I am sure the board of enquiry will submit it's report as early as possible", Sharma said.

12:21   Will give befitting reply if Pak violates ceasefire: Rajnath
Army will give a "befitting" reply to Pakistan in case of violation of ceasefire, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said here today. "Our Army will give a befitting reply to Pakistan if that country violates ceasfire... Kashmir is an integral part of India," Singh said while replying to queries at a presser.

Asked about the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in Russia and the decision of the Pakistani authorities not to petition in court for 26/11 mastermind Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi's voice sample, Rajnath said, "Modiji ne haath nahi failaya tha lekin unka dono desh mein dosti ka prayatna tha (Modi did not plead but had only tried to foster friendly relations between the two countries)."

On the 'Vyapam' scam in Madhya Pradesh, Rajnath accused the opposition of "maligning" the image of the BJP government.

"Opposition parties are maligning our image. Madhya Pradesh government led by chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is transparent and it was Chouhan who had written a letter to the Supreme Court seeking a CBI probe into the scam," Singh said.

On Kumbh Mela, Singh said, "I am happy and prayed to Almighty to make India a 'samrudhha' (prosperous) nation." Singh attended 'Dhwajarohan' (flag-hoisting) ceremony that marked the beginning of the 'Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2015' in Trimbakeshwar this morning.

12:09   Let Doval, Aziz wear petticoats, if that would bring peace
The media controversy that has erupted over the India-Pakistan joint statement issued at Ufa, Russia, following the meeting between the two prime ministers last Friday, has a familiar ring about it, but is all the same tragi-comic.

Why tragedy? Because, the India-Pakistan diplomatic history is littered with unborn fetuses. The ease with which L.K. Advani and camp follower Sushma Swaraj (who was the then Minister for Information) could derail the Agra Summit between Prime Minister A. B. Vajpayee and President Pervez Musharraf is useful to recall.

11:38   Kejriwal appeals for donations as AAP runs out of funds
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal says AAP has run out of money and appeals for more donations. Kejriwal said today, "After we came to power, our funds were exhausted. The public funded us, we never took any money under the table. We gave a record of every rupee we got. Now we want funds to run our party and we want it from the public."

In February, the union government had informed the Delhi High Court that nothing has been found against the Aam Aadmi Party in its probe regarding allegations that it had received offshore funds in violation of FCRA provisions.

The counsel appearing for the Home Ministry told a bench, comprising Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice R S Endlaw, that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) report has found nothing against the AAP.

The court, however, directed the government to file a fresh status report in a sealed cover regarding its findings in the matter.

The court reserved the verdict on the plea seeking CBI probe into the past and present foreign funding of AAP in alleged violation of FCRA provisions.

"We will take into consideration all the facts and then decide the matter. Judgement reserved," it said.

11:14   Amit Shah never stated that 'acche din' will take 25 years: BJP
As the opposition attacked it over Amit Shah's reported comment that it will take 25 years for the promised 'achhe din' to come, the BJP today termed the report as "baseless" and said the party president had stated that it will take these many years to restore India its "ancient glory".

"Shah said the BJP government had curbed corruption and brought down inflation. It is working to end corruption and create many jobs in five years. But the dream of making India 'Vishwa guru (world leader) will take 25 years to realise," BJP secretary and media cell in-charge Shrikant Sharma said.

A media report today quoted Shah as having told party leaders and workers at a meet in Bhopal yesterday that the good days promised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take 25 years to come.

Latching onto it, Congress leader Digvijay Shah took a dig at Shah, saying his good days had arrived and people can forget about theirs. Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal wondered in a tweet, "Would people have voted for BJP had it told them that it will take 25 years for good days to arrive".

09:41   Tainted IPL teams to receive punishment today
A Supreme Court-appointed committee, headed by former Chief Justice of India R M Lodha, will today pronounce the quantum of punishment against IPL teams Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals and their team officials Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra for betting during IPL 8 season.

The panel will also decide the fate of two IPL franchisees Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals.

The apex court had on January 22 held that the allegation of betting against Meiyappan and Kundra stands proved and set up the three-member committee of its retired judges, including Justices Ashok Bhan and R V Raveendran to determine the punishment for Meiyappan, who was the CSK team Principal and Kundra, co-owner of RR.

Sources in the committee said the three former judges, who were asked to complete the task within six months, have also examined the amendments to the memorandum of association and rules and regulations considered necessary to provide a mechanism for resolving conflict of interest.

The apex court bench headed by Justice T S Thakur had said it was appointing an independent committee of judges keeping in view the "the trajectory of the present litigation and the important issues it has raised."

Further, the bench had said "the profile of the individuals who have been indicted, would, in our opinion, demand that the award of punishment for misconduct is left to an independent committee to exercise that power for and on the behalf of BCCI.

The apex court held that the allegation of betting against Meiyappan, son in law of former BCCI President N Srinivasan, and Kundra stands proved while the charge of cover-up against Srinivasan was "not proved".

Under IPL rules, the franchise of a team can be cancelled if a team official indulges in any act that brings the game to disrepute.

09:17   14-hour general strike called in Manipur today
A 14-hour general strike has been called in Manipur today by the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System to press its demand for introducing an effective bill for implementation of restriction on visitors from outside to the state.

The strike which will start at 5 am will coincide with the curfew relaxation hours. Notices by the authorities of Imphal East and West districts said the prohibitory order, which entered its sixth day today, would be relaxed between 5 am and 4 pm today.

The general strike is the second in a week by JCILPS, which in its release asked the state government to "Give up the habit of waking up to the public issues only when there were violent protests."

The state government in the face of growing protests, which had spread to districts beyond Greater Imphal, withdrew on Sunday the controversial Manipur Regulation of Visitors and Migrant Workers Bill, 2015, meant for the protection of the
interests of indigenous people.

A Manipur cabinet meeting on Monday decided to convene a special session of the assembly on Wednesday to discuss the withdrawal of the bill.

A student was killed in confrontation between the protesters and the police on July 8, which led to the imposition of the indefinite curfew. Since then protesters have defied the prohibitory orders everyday to stage sit-ins, take out processions and clash with the police.

09:03   NASA counts down to nail-biter Pluto flyby
An unmanned NASA spacecraft is hurtling into the unknown, and will make a close shave past Pluto today, allowing scientists a close glimpse of the dwarf planet's surface for the first time.

But there were some jitters on Mondat as the $700 million spacecraft, called New Horizons, sped toward Pluto, the last undiscovered frontier in the solar system.

According to principal investigator Alan Stern, there is a one in 10,000 chance that the spacecraft could be lost in a collision with debris around Pluto, long considered the farthest planet from the sun until it was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006.

The closest approach is set for today at 7:49 am (5:19 PM), when the piano-sized spacecraft shaves by Pluto's surface at a speed of 30,800 miles (49,570 kilometers) per hour.

The first spacecraft to visit an unexplored planet since the NASA Voyager missions of the 1970s will be busy snapping pictures and collecting data, and will phone home later.

New Horizons will send a signal to Earth at 4:20 pm (1:50 AM IST on Wednesday). It will take nearly five hours to reach scientists.

That means NASA won't announce until about 13 hours after the flyby, at 9:02 pm (6:32 AM IST Wednesday), whether or not the
spacecraft survived the high-speed encounter.

04:55   Yemen officials: Saudi-led coalition strike kills 25 people
Yemen's Shiite rebels and medical officials say an airstrike by the Saudi-led coalition has killed 25 civilians and wounded 50 in the capital, Sanaa.

The rebels, known as Houthis, say the early today strike hit the Sawan neighborhood in eastern Sanaa.

Smoke billowed from the slum area, which lies hundreds of meters (yards) from a military camp used by the rebels.

Airstrikes and ground fighting in Yemen have continued for the third day despite a U.N.-brokered truce between the rebels and the internationally-backed government in exile and its allies.

Hospital officials say women and children were among the casualties. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to reporters.

More than 3,000 people have been killed in Yemen since the airstrikes began in March.

04:54   23 dead in Syria regime raids on IS-held town
At least 23 people, among them a child, were killed in government raids on the Islamic State group-held town of Al-Bab in northern Syria today, a monitor said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said "container bombs" had been dropped on the town in Aleppo province from helicopters.

"Ten charred bodies have been found, taking to 23 the number of people killed in the bombardment," the Britain-based monitor's chief Rami Abdel Rahman said.

He added that it had been impossible to identify the 10 as they had been so badly burned.

A previous Observatory toll spoke of 13 dead, including seven women and a child, and 40 wounded.

One of the places hit in Al-Bab was a market selling petrol, the monitor said.

The Local Coordination Committees activist network had earlier reported charred bodies being recovered from the site of one of the strikes.

On Saturday, 34 people, most of them civilians and among them three children, were killed in similar regime raids on Al-Bab.

Syria's army has regularly targeted Al-Bab, which has been held by IS since early 2014, but the town has also been hit on occasion by US-led air strikes.

04:47   Greek civil servants' union calls 24-hour strike for Wednesday
Greece's public servants are being called to stage a 24-hour strike for today, the day their country's parliament is to vote on reforms needed to unlock a crucial eurozone rescue.

Their union, Adedy, called for the stoppage in a statement issued today, saying it was to show their opposition to the outline agreement with the eurozone.

It will also urge the civil servants to take part in a demonstration against the reforms scheduled to take place in front of parliament late Wednesday.

This will be the first strike to happen under the six-month-old government of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who is head of the radical left coalition Syriza.

Before coming to power, Syriza participated in stoppages and demonstrations against austerity in 2010 and 2014 which previous conservative governments voted for.

Demonstrations were already to take place in Athens late Monday against the latest reform package, which requires parliament to back tax hikes and pension cuts in return for the eurozone bailout worth up to 86 billion euros ($96 billion), and against the euro. Without the loan, Greece's economy is likely to shatter, with exit from the euro a very real possibility.

To secure the rescue, Tsipras is going to have to win parliamentary backing, maybe relying on opposition votes if many of his Syriza MPs rebel.

Syriza and its junior coalition partner, the Independent Greeks, are to hold separate meetings tomorrow to study the reform package.

04:46   Son of Boston police captain charged in terror bomb plot
Prosecutors have arrested the son of a Boston police captain in a plot to commit terrorist acts on behalf of the Islamic State group.

Alexander Ciccolo (chih-KOH'-loh) is accused in a criminal complaint unsealed today of receiving four guns July 4 from a person cooperating with the Western Massachusetts Joint Terrorism Task Force.

An FBI affidavit says the 23-year-old Adams resident had talked with the cooperating witness in recorded conversations about his plans to commit acts inspired by the Islamic State group, including setting off pressure-cooker bombs at an unidentified university. According to the affidavit, he said the attack would include executions of students broadcast live online.

Before his arrest, agents had observed Ciccolo buying a pressure cooker similar to those used in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings.

01:48   Shebab militants target Kenyan police in IED attack
Suspected militants from the Somali-led Shebab Islamist group carried out a bomb attack against Kenyan police today, but the officers escaped
unharmed, a Kenyan official said.

The attack took place in the coastal county of Lamu, which borders Somalia and has been hit by a wave of attacks by the Al-Qaeda linked group.

Northeastern regional commissioner Mohamud Saleh said a police four-wheel drive vehicle hit an IED (improvised explosive device) while officers were travelling to Lamu from a neighbouring county to buy supplies.

He said the vehicle was badly damaged but that the officers had been evacuated to the nearby town of Hindi.

Shebab militants have recently been blamed for a string of security incidents in the Lamu area, including attacks on passenger buses and a failed raid on a military base last month.

The militant group is believed to have fighters operating in the area's Boni forest.

In mid-June 2014 close to 100 people were killed in a series of armed assaults on the town of Mpeketoni and surrounding villages in Lamu county.

These attacks, close to the once-popular holiday island of Lamu, led to a collapse in tourism on Kenya's coast after foreign governments warned their nationals against travelling to the area.

00:30   ISRO targetting 10 launches a year by 2016
India's premier Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is targetting up to 10
launches a year by 2016 , a top ISRO official today said.

"We intend up to 10 launches a year. By March next, 7-8 launches will be held. By next year, we are expecting 10 launches a year", ISRO Chairman, Kiran Kumar, told reporters at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC)'s office at nearby Akkulam.

On the total outlay for the ambitious project, he said in the 12th five year plan, their allocation had been reduced.

"This year we expect to make full use of the allocation and are expecting anything between Rs 6000-to Rs 7000 crore," Kumar said.

Of the 7 IRNSS (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System) constellation of satellites, 4 have already been launched and the remaining will be launched in the current fiscal, he said.

ISRO was having "heavy demand" for launches and is in the process of planning for a third launch pad at SriHarikotta.

The organisation is also looking into the possibility of working out models for outsourcing the entire integration process of launch vehicles to meet the heavy demand, he said.

With Government not allowing its manpower to increase, meeting this high demand through out sourcing could be a solution, he said.

On the Re-usable launch vehicle Technology Demonstration Programme (RLV-TD), he said the Vikram Sarabhai space centre, was targetting this mission in the third week of October.

The demonstration vehicle will cost around Rs 3 crore, VSSC Director, Dr K Sivan, who was also present, said adding "We are doing it in a cost effective way".

The Chandrayan II was progressing satisfactorily and was expected to be launched in 2018, the chairman said.

The cryogenic engine for GSLV MK III was ground tested for the full flight duration and will be ready by next year for the launch of the first development flight of GSLV MK III in December 2016.

00:20   Bomb blast hits Afghan mosque, wounding 29
An Afghan official says a bomb blast inside a mosque in Baghlan province north of the capital, Kabul, has wounded 29 people.

The spokesman for the provincial police, Jawed Basharat, says the worshipers had finished their evening prayers at a mosque in the provincial capital of Puli Khumri and were waiting for food deliveries when the bomb went off today evening.

The spokesman says the food was donated by the acting provincial governor Sultan Mohammad Ebadi, who was at the prayers. Food donations and evening iftar meals provided for the poor are typical during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Basharat says one member of the local provincial council was among those wounded in the blast.

No group one immediately claimed responsibility for the explosion.
