Army officer presented gallantry award on R-Day killed in encounter today

Colonel MN Rai, commanding officer of 42 Rashtriya Rifles, killed in anti-terror op in Tral, J&K, had won the Yudh Seva Medal yesterday on Republic Day.

Mukhtar Ahmad/Rediff.com reports that a senior police officer said troops of counter insurgency Raahtriya Rifles and police had jointly surrounded a house in the Handoora village in Tral on specific information about the presence of militants inside it.

"As security forces challenged the militants they opened fire triggering an encounter. One army officer and a cop were injured and evacuated to hospital for treatment," the officer told Rediff.com.
