35 floating bodies in Ganga raise an alarm

Sharat Pradhan reports: The sudden appearance of around 35 bodies in the shallow waters of the Ganga river, about 70 km from Lucknow caused an alarm , sending the Uttar Pradesh administration in a spin.

Only hours later, it was discovered that the bodies were none other than those immersed by people living in the neighbouring villages along the upstream .

"We have reason to believe that these were bodies that were routinely immersed by certain Hindu communities, who choose not to burn their dead if the deceased were unmarried, or poor and cannot afford  a cremation', said S K Singh, additional district magistrate of Unnao district under which the area falls.
