22:38   Boston bombing trial opens with jury selection
The long-awaited trial of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev began today with jury selection, 20 months after the devastating attack that killed three at the city's signature race.

Tsarnaev, a 21-year-old Muslim of Chechen origin, faces the death penalty if convicted in federal court for what was the worst act of terror on US soil since the September 11 attacks in 2001.

Dressed in a dark pullover and light pants and with a shock of tangled hair and small beard, Tsarnaev appeared opposite a first group of 200 to 250 potential jurors as US District Judge George O'Toole briefly reviewed the charges against him.

"What you need is a commitment to justice," O'Toole advised the jurors.

Tsarnaev -- flanked by his defense team -- has pleaded not guilty to the 30 charges, including the use of a weapon of mass destruction leading to death, and carrying out an attack in a public place.

With his older brother Tamerlan, Tsarnaev is alleged to have set the bombs, which exploded 12 seconds apart on April 15, 2013, ripping through crowds gathered near the finish line as the race was ending.

More than 260 people were wounded. Several people lost limbs when the pressure-cooker bombs -- packed with nails and other shrapnel -- exploded.

Tamerlan was killed in a confrontation with police days after the attacks.

19:58   In Modi era, petrol costs more than aviation fuel: Cong
Petrol for common man costs more than the Aviation Turbine Fuel used in planes, Congress said today while seeking to paint the Narendra Modi government as anti-poor and questioning it for the "grave injustice".

What is "more painful" today is the fact that the price of petrol paid by the common man is Rs 61.33 per litre as against price of aviation fuel which is Rs 52.42 per litre, Congress spokesman Randeep Surjewala told reporters here. Terming it as "most shocking", he said the government is "anti-poor and anti-farmer" as he accused it of "shameless profiteering" and "betraying" the people by refusing to reduce the prices of Petrol.

"Will the BJP and Modi answer the fundamental reason for this grave injustice to the people where they pay more for fuel in ordinary scooter/motorcycle/car/tractor as compared to the Aviation Turbine Fuel used by airplanes," he asked.

Seeking to paint the government pro-rich, he said the "irony" is that the price of aviation fuel has been reduced by 31.24 per cent as against a "mere reduction" of 15.73 per cent and 11.38 per cent in prices of petrol and diesel, respectively.

10:48   Mumbai train riots: Where are 'achche din' if commuters face problems?
Criticising authorities over handling of commuter rage and breakdown of suburban train services last week, the Shiv Sena today mocked the Centre's promise of "achche din" and asked where are the good days assured to the people.

"It is true that there were protests (on Friday) and they had turned violent. But neither the police nor the authorities are willing to probe what led the people to turn violent," an editorial in Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana' said.

"If similar incidents, that had taken place during the Congress rule, continue abated, who exactly is experiencing 'achche din' (days of good governance)?" it sought to know. "Those (political parties) who thought that law should be taken into one's own hands when they were not in power, have their government now. If these protests were a result of people's frustration towards administration, we need to ensure it doesn't become a cause of law and order breakdown," the Sena, which is part pf the ruling BJP-led alliance at the Centre and Maharashtra, said.

The route taken by the boat was not normal, even the smugglers normally take the busy route so that they can mingle with other boats."

Parrikar also said that there was another Pakistani boat, but in international waters

The incident took place almost 365 kms off Gujarat's Porbandar coast and once again highlights the maritime threats faced by India. All the four people on board the boat are believed to have died in the explosion and subsequent sinking of the vessel.
