Pakistan terror wave sparks rare Saudi criticism
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have long enjoyed close relations, but Islamabad's new-found resolve for fighting the root causes of extremism has seen the Gulf state come in for rare criticism.

The two countries, both with majority Sunni Muslim populations, are bound together by shared Islamic religious ties, financial aid from oil-rich Saudi and Pakistani military assistance to the kingdom.

But a Taliban massacre at a school that killed more than 150 people in December, mostly children, has led the government to crack down on militants and talk of bringing religious seminaries under tighter control.

Now the country's media and even government ministers have begun to question whether support from Saudi Arabia for seminaries, known as madrassas, is fuelling violent extremism -- bringing tension to the relationship for the first time.

Last week the Saudi embassy issued a statement saying that all its donations to seminaries had government clearance, after a minister accused the Riyadh government of creating instability across the Muslim world.

The Pakistani foreign ministry responded by saying that funding by private individuals through "informal channels" would also be scrutinised closely to try to choke off funding for terror groups.

While the statement avoided mentioning Saudi Arabia specifically, it was widely interpreted as a rebuke.

FM asks bank employee unions to withdraw strike call
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today appealed to bank employee unions to call off their proposed four-day nationwide strike from February 25 as talks are on for a revision of wages of employees.

The minister said banks are already in negotiations with their unions and associations for wage settlement and "the bipartite negotiations in a cordial manner is the only available tool for settlement".

Public sector bank employee unions have given a call to go on a country-wide strike from February 25 to press for their wage-related demands.

In a statement, Jaitley appealed to all employees of PSBs and their unions and associations not to resort to agitation approach by participating in a strike and "call off the call for strike".

He said participating in the proposed strike is neither desirable nor affordable in the interest of the nation.

Earlier, United Forum of Bank Unions Convener M V Murali had said banks already had incorporated wage increase of 15 per cent into their accounting but their offering is 13 per cent only.

New Sri Lanka govt ends US lobbying contracts
In a sign of improving relations with the US, Sri Lanka has terminated lobbying contracts worth tens of thousands of dollars a month that the previous government had signed to help it win friends in Washington amid war crimes allegations, the nation's ambassador says.

The investment in lobbyists to foster political and economic ties had gathered steam last summer, in the dying months of the administration of then-President Mahinda Rajapaksa, but with little apparent benefit, as Sri Lanka's international isolation deepened over its refusal to credibly probe civilian deaths during the civil war that ended 2009.

But political change inside Sri Lanka itself has done the trick. There has been a turn-around in the US relationship after new President Maithripala Sirisena won January 8 elections and promised democratic reforms and accountability for human rights violations.

Sirisena was elected in large part because of public dismay over the rising cost of living on the South Asian island, where the monthly per capita GDP is about $540 (Rs 33,582).

China again protests against Modi's visit to Arunachal
In the second protest in as many days, China on Saturday expressed its opposition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Arunachal Pradesh contending that the action "artificially amplified differences on the border dispute".

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin "called in" India's envoy in Beijing Ashok Kantha to lodge a protest on Modi's visit on Friday to the "disputed border region", state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

"Liu expressed 'strong dissatisfaction and staunch opposition' to the Indian side's insistence on arranging the visit by its leader to the disputed area on China-India border," the report said.

The Chinese embassy in India had lodged representation with the Indian authorities on the visit last night, the Xinhua report said.

During the meeting with Kantha, Liu said that Modi's visit "undermined China's territorial sovereignty, right and interests".

China claims Arunachal Pradesh as part of Southern Tibet.

Liu said "such act by the Indian side artificially amplified differences between the two countries on the border issue and thus went against the principles and consensus that the two sides reached on properly addressing the issue," the report said.

He reiterated that China which has consistent and clear-cut stance on the border issue "never recognised the so-called 'Arunachal Pradesh' unilaterally set up by the Indian side".

"It's a universally recognised, un-evadable fact that significant disputes do exist on the eastern section of the China-India border," Liu said.

It's a Rs 10,000 crore scam, says Santanu Saikia
A key accused in the corporate espionage case today claimed that it was a Rs 10,000 crore scam that he was trying to uncover as police said documents seized from corporate executives related to "national security" that can attract Official Secrets Act provisions.

Meanwhile, a local court remanded the five arrested corporate executives in police custody till February 24 for further questioning. Delhi Police also conducted raids here and in nearby Noida looking for stolen documents from offices of petroleum companies.

Santanu Saikia, a former journalist, now an energy consultant running a website, claimed to reporters outside a Crime Branch office that it was a Rs 10,000 crore scam, which he was trying to uncover. "Please quote me," he said as policemen took him in for interrogation.

Reacting to his claim, Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said Saikia was saying such things for covering up his own defence.

"Let him spill out all the information he has. The primary accusation is that somebody stole the papers from the ministry. Police is investigating. Anybody has the right to tell everything to the police," he said.

2 AAP MLAs booked, 6 supporters held for clash with cops
An FIR has been registered against two AAP MLAs and their supporters, six of whom have been arrested, over a violent clash with police at Burari police station in north Delhi yesterday which left 15 people injured.

Invoking Hitler, Raghuram Rajan says, 'Strong govt doesn't move always in right direction'
"I want to talk about something I have been studying for many years, the development of a liberal market democracy. In doing this, I will wear my hat as a professor in the field known as political economy,"said RBI Govenor Raghuram Rajan at the DD Kosambi Ideas Festival held in Goa.

In an extraordinary speech titled 'Democracy, Inclusion, and Prosperity', he said, "Strong governments may not, however, move in the right direction. Hitler provided Germany with extremely effective administration -- the trains ran on time, as did the trains during our own Emergency in 1975-77. His was a strong government, but Hitler took Germany efficiently and determinedly on a path to ruin, overriding the rule of law and dispensing with elections. It is not sufficient that the trains run on time, they have to go in the right direction at the desired time."

Humour always invokes radical reactions: Shah Rukh Khan on AIB roast
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan would not like to take any sides on the controversy surrounding the AIB roast as he feels humour is a tricky thing and will always invoke different reactions from people.

When asked about the celebrity roast involving Karan Johar, Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, the actor said he believes in humour but has also become careful with his words as an entertainer. "I am someone who has always believed in sense of humour. Over the years my sense of humour is rounded off if not completely over. I have learnt to curtail it because there is always going to be a thin line when it comes to humour. It is always going to invoke radical reaction, either you are going to laugh at it or hate it," Shah Rukh told PTI in an interview.

"When you are a popular actor like I am, people listen to you... So, you need to relook at it and I am only speaking about myself here. There will always be issues and questions. I can't take any sides."

Lanka passes bill to protect victims of crimes, witnesses
Sri Lanka has approved a bill for the protection of victims and witnesses of crimes, seen as reflection of the new government's will to implement reforms.

Fulfilling a long-held international demand for justice and human rights accountability in the country, the law is believed to encourage more witnesses to speak up -- an important requirement to end the culture of impunity.

The law provides for compensation to witnesses cooperating with investigations and punitive action against those who would harass victims or witnesses to a crime.

Sri Lanka faced US-backed UN Human Rights Council resolutions on rights accountability for three consecutive years since 2012. The 2014 resolution mandated the setting up of an international investigation into alleged human rights abuses during the last phase of the nearly three decade-long civil war that wiped out the LTTE leadership.

Shiv Sena defends Modi's suit auction
The Shiv Sena today came to the defence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the auction of his pinstripe monogrammed suit and said the two-piece ensemble was valued highly because of the person who wore it.

"Instead of criticising, the Congress can auction the wardrobe and footwear of Rahul Gandhi and see what amount they fetch. Similarly, Arvind Kejriwal can auction his muffler while Lalu Prasad and Mulayam Singh Yadav can call for bidding of their belongings...The suit which fetched over Rs 4.31crore is because of the person who wore it," an edit in party mouthpiece Saamana, said today.

Lost Sherlock Holmes story discovered in man's attic
An historian has unearthed the first unseen Sherlock Holmes story in more than 80 years that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote to help save a town bridge.

Walter Elliot, 80, found the 1,300-word tale starring the famous detective in a collection of short stories written for a local bazaar.

Elliot has now unearthed a copy of the book and spotted his story "Sherlock Holmes: Discovering the Border Burghs and, by deduction, the Brig Bazaar". He was given the 48-page pamphlet more than 50 years ago by a friend, but forgot about it until recently when he looked in the attic.

Been there, done that: The scribe and the paper trail
There is a sense of dj vu about the way the Narendra Modi government has tried to cover itself with a bit of glory after claiming to have busted a corporate espionage racket in the petroleum ministry this week, reports The Telegraph.

The government claims the racket had festered and grown over years. That has always been something of an open secret within journalistic circles and the chatter in Delhi Press Club has been about how Santanu Saikia, a former mainstream journalist who now runs an energy website called Indian Petro.com, found himself embroiled in the controversy.

Saikia has been here before: several years ago, he was battling a charge of a violation of the Official Secrets Act after filing a report based on "top secret" documents.

In his defence at that time, Saikia had said the OSA was a relic from the British past that was supposed to target enemies of the state. To use the provisions of the legislation against a journalist was blatantly high-handed and a gross attempt to muzzle a scribe who would naturally use any means at his command to gather information. Saikia was acquitted in that case.

On Friday, Saikia was trotting out the same argument to blunt the charges that have been levelled against him. Delhi police have claimed that he had a trove of official documents in his possession and that, by itself, seemed to suggest that he was passing on information to certain corporate houses.

High air pollution cuts lives of 660 million Indians by 3 years
India's high air pollution, ranked by the World Health Organisation among the worst in the world, is adversely impacting the lifespans of its citizens, reducing most Indian lives by over three years, a new study has said.

Over half of India's population -- 660 million people -- live in areas where fine particulate matter pollution is above India's standards for what is considered safe, said the study by economists from the University of Chicago, Harvard and Yale published in this week's 'Economic & Political Weekly'.

If India reverses this trend to meet its air standards, those 660 million people would gain about 3.2 years onto their lives, the study said. Put another way, compliance with Indian air quality standards would save 2.1 billion life-years, it said.

Russia 'undermining' global world order: US
In some of its sharpest criticism to date, Washington accused Moscow on Friday of "undermining" the global order by supporting rebels in eastern Ukraine.

Germany and France also demanded that a crumbling Ukraine truce be "fully respected," but the words appeared hollow as pro-Russian rebels celebrated a battlefield victory in the strategic town of Debaltseve.

"Russia's continued support of ongoing separatist attacks in violation of the ceasefire in eastern Ukraine is undermining international diplomacy and multilateral institutions - the foundations of our modern global order," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

She insisted that the ceasefire deals reached in Minsk in September and renewed last week were "the basis for a durable resolution in eastern Ukraine."

Multiple suicide bombings in Libya kill at least 45
Multiple suicide car bombings struck an eastern Libyan town, killing at least 45 people on Friday not far from a main base of the Islamic State group's Libyan offshoot. The group claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it came in retaliation for recent Egyptian airstrikes that avenged the beheading of 21 Christian hostages by Libyan Islamic State militants.

The massive bombings rocked the town of Qubba, which is under control of the country's internationally recognized government and about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from Darna a stronghold of Libya's Islamic State branch. In a statement posted on social networking sites, the group said two of the "Caliphate's knights" carried out the bombings, targeting what they described as a Libyan army operations room.

The deadliest bombing was carried by an attacker who rammed an explosives-packed ambulance into a gas station where motorists were lined up, army spokesman Mohammed Hegazi said.
