Just hours before comedienne Aditi Mittal was meant to perform at a popular South Mumbai restaurant, the show was cancelled.

Cheval Bar and Restaurant in the city's famous Kala Ghoda area blamed the cancellation on "unforeseen circumstances" after NDTV called the reservation desk to book tickets.

Mittal, 27, was part of a panel of eight comics who roasted actors Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor at a stadium in Mumbai with an audience of 4,000.

The roast, conceived by comic collective AIB, has been accused of obscenity by critics.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has warned that "action will be taken if it emerges that laws were violated."

Online outrage has attacked the government of moral policing and infringement of the right to freedom of expression.

"The AIB Knockout Roast" got eight million views on YouTube before it was removed on Tuesday night.

In a statement sent last evening, AIB said it was not forced to remove the show.

Mittal was scheduled to take the stage at Cheval at 10:00 pm.  At 9.30 pm, the restaurant's Facebook page shared, "Just to let you guys know once again, tonight's edition of Wednesday Wisecrackers is cancelled."

The three other comics who were meant to perform also did not appear.

Cheval Bar and Restaurant has not given a reason for the cancellation but sources say this has been done fearing protests. -- NDTV
