23:37   AAP volunteers given spy cams to capture bid to buy votes
Accusing BJP of "buying votes", AAP today claimed to have handed over around 5,000 spy cameras to its volunteers to record any attempt to "distribute cash and liquor to lure voters".

"We have information that BJP is distributing money, liquor and non-vegetarian food to the public and they are also seizing voter identity cards of poor," AAP leader Ashutosh said.

The party underlined the move as an attempt to curb the practise of liquor and money distribution during elections.

"The technology used this time allows the transfer of video recordings and visuals immediately from the spy cams to centralised war rooms set up by the party," a volunteer said.

It rules out any danger to the volunteers on ground while facilitating the quick handing over of the evidence to the Election Commission for immediate action, he added.

Earlier, making a counter allegation, Union Minister and BJP leader Nirmala Sitharaman said that there are reports that liquor and cash is being distributed by AAP candidates.

Cash is being distributed by AAP candidates," Union Minister and BJP leader Nirmala Sitharaman said at a press conference in Delhi, during which she also alleged that AAP was playing the communal card to polarise voters.

15:22   Why Bhushan can't lean on AAP
More on the Bhushans.

Supreme Court lawyer Shanti Bhushan, who is a father figure of AAP had presented a Rs 1 crore cheque to the party when it was founded. That was how much faith and belief he had about the party and what it stood for. But over the last couple of weeks his displeasure with the party and the chief convenor Arvind Kejriwal has been out in the open.

Both Shanti Bhushan and his son Prashant Bhushan are upset that the party  has been taken over by Left leaning elements. In fact, that is one of the main reasons for Shanti Bhushan's pro-Kiran Bedi vote. They believe, that Bedi, is at least not a law-breaker.

15:15   Kejriwal may be sworn in on February 14 at Vijay Chowk
The buzz in the AAP headquarters in Delhi is that Arvind Kejriwal is sure of victory. The party, or at least, Ashish Khaitan and Ashutosh, believe it will get 57 seats out of 70. Kejriwal's swearing-in ceremony will be at Vijay Chowk on February 14 and not at Ram Lila Maidan as was the case earlier. Lakhs of people are expected to attend and the party is in fact shortlisting names for ministers.
image
15:12   Why Prashant Bhushan is NOT campaigning for AAP
AAP leader Prashant Bhushan is not on talking terms with any of the rank and file or for that matter any AAP leader. Prashant Bhushan is now tilting towards his father's opinion of Arvind Kejriwal and his party and has been heard saying that Kejriwal is dictatorial.

Bhushan is upset that Kejriwal did not consult him or his father Shanti Bhushan while deciding to write to the Chief Justice of India about forming a SIT on political fundings.

Bhushan has expressed surprise that Kejriwal does not know that the apex court does not have jurisdiction over party funding.

Bhushan like his father believes that AAP has become a one-man show and has therefore stayed away from the campaign trail.

Last month, Shanti Bhushan had said that Kejriwal only wants winnability. "He must step down as AAP convener because the idea of AAP is bigger than Kejriwal," Bhushan had said.

The senior Bhushan even claimed that his son and Prashant Bhushan also agreed with his stand in private, but is gagged from admitting it in public because of the ongoing elections.

13:25   Sustaining ambition in the US-India relationship
President Barack Obama's visit to India for Republic Day may mark an inflection point in US-India relations. The symbolism of the invitation alone was unmistakable: in one bold gesture, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi swept aside the cautious, zero-sum politics of the last decade and openly embraced closer ties with the United States.

With "strategic partnership' now a generic descriptor of cordial bilateral ties, President Obama laid down a marker of his own, resolving that America can become India's "best partner' in achieving its great power aspirations. Read more

11:38   Delhi polls: AAP accuses BJP of trying to buy votes
The AAP-BJP bitter spat today saw the Aam Aadmi Party today accusing the saffron party of trying to "buy votes" ahead of February 7 Assembly polls by distributing money and free liquor.

"We have information that BJP is distributing money, liquor and non-vegetarian food to the public and they are also seizing voter identity cards of poor," AAP leader Ashutosh alleged.

"We also have information that they are trying to traumatise and threaten these voters that if they vote for AAP, they will have to bear the consequences later," he told reporters.

Responding to the allegations, BJP spokesperson GVL Narsimha said, "They (AAP) have even sold their party tickets in these elections and their candidates were found collecting and storing liquor for distribution in elections."

"They make all kinds of allegations against every party and institution including the Election Commission but they think they are not required to answer any questions.

"It is the same party which is in the dock for its hawala transactions, for conversion of black money into white and they seem to be completely oblivious to these glaring omissions and commissions on their part," he alleged.

11:26   Mumbai restaurant cancels act by comic from AIB Roast
Just hours before comedienne Aditi Mittal was meant to perform at a popular South Mumbai restaurant, the show was cancelled.

Cheval Bar and Restaurant in the city's famous Kala Ghoda area blamed the cancellation on "unforeseen circumstances" after NDTV called the reservation desk to book tickets.

Mittal, 27, was part of a panel of eight comics who roasted actors Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor at a stadium in Mumbai with an audience of 4,000.

The roast, conceived by comic collective AIB, has been accused of obscenity by critics.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has warned that "action will be taken if it emerges that laws were violated."

Online outrage has attacked the government of moral policing and infringement of the right to freedom of expression.

"The AIB Knockout Roast" got eight million views on YouTube before it was removed on Tuesday night.

In a statement sent last evening, AIB said it was not forced to remove the show.

Mittal was scheduled to take the stage at Cheval at 10:00 pm.  At 9.30 pm, the restaurant's Facebook page shared, "Just to let you guys know once again, tonight's edition of Wednesday Wisecrackers is cancelled."

The three other comics who were meant to perform also did not appear.

09:09   A mortar-for-bullet game
The conclusion of a number of significant agreements by India and the United States during US President Barack Obama's recent visit to New Delhi has attracted a great deal of adverse commentary from Islamabad.

PM Nawaz Sharif's Foreign Affairs pointsman Sartaj Aziz has voiced serious concerns about the regional "strategic imbalance" arising out of the Indo-US deals at a time when Indo-Pak relations have reached a new low due to ceasefire violations along the LoC.

Pakistan, according to him, "is examining the imbalance and the possible ways and means for redressing it." Strategic assessments such as these, made in the wake of the recent spate of violence along the border, could potentially lead to a renewed standoff between the South Asian adversaries. There is therefore an urgent need to put in place mechanisms to get the relationship back on track.

In an act that has caused much surprise and alarm, the JJ Marg police have booked a newspaper vendor for selling the January 17 issue of the Urdu daily Avadhnama, which carried a photo of the cover of the French magazine Charlie Hebdo with the controversial cartoon of Prophet Mohammed. Legal experts and newspaper vendors across the city said they were unhappy with the action taken by the police and wondered how a vendor could be held responsible for the content in a newspaper. The complainant has, however, stated that the vendor knew and understood Urdu and knew about the article and, thus, should have refrained from selling the newspaper.

08:08   Freed Al Jazeera scribe wants to enjoy beach, sunset
He's the foreign correspondent who became the centre of an international story, but after 400 days in an Egyptian prison Peter Greste has a newfound appreciation for the simple things in life. Flanked by his parents and two brothers in Brisbane on Thursday morning, just 10 hours after arriving in his home state, Greste, a journalist for Middle Eastern broadcaster Al Jazeera, said, his mind always wandered to the same place while locked up in the Cairo jail. "You always have your dark days and I often closed my eyes and just let my mind drift to where it wanted to go and almost invariably it went to the beach, to the coast, to the sea in some form," he said.

"I didn't see a whole lot of sunsets in the last 400 or 500 days or so. I haven't seen the stars a lot. "I'm really keen to get out there and enjoy those little things. Those are the bits and pieces that really make life worthwhile."

03:12   ISIS is in damage control mode over burning of Jordanian pilot
When ISIS posted a video of the immolation of Jordanian pilot Muath al-Kaseasbeh, it already knew it would face a backlash in the Islamic world.

The video of al-Kaseasbeh's execution in a blaze of flame was circulated around 11:30 am EST. Just 10 minutes later, a list of talking points for supporters -- a sort of crisis management plan -- was circulated, describing how to justify the latest execution under Islamic principles if questioned.

The forum post was entitled "Moaz Was Burnt Alive, Below Is the Islamic Justification for Such an Act." The post purported to prepare its online defenders to answer questions that may arise from the video and the means of execution portrayed therein.

The user who created it, a moderator on the Al-Platform forum, said: "People are going to ask themselves whether or not this is approved by religion. Some can claim that religion is not approving of burning people, and nor the Sharia or common sense."

03:11   Sony hack cost the company $15 million
Last year's massive hack on Sony Pictures Entertainment, which the U.S. administration has blamed on North Korea, cost the Sony division around $15 million.

In Sonys results for the third quarter of its fiscal year (the fourth quarter of 2014 proper), the company had to provide forecasted rather than actual results for the movie unit, because the cyberattack so severely disrupted its network and infrastructure.

The Japanese company placed the cost for investigating and remediating the attack at approximately $15 million, a hit that it will place on its books for the current quarter. It said the impact on its full-year results "will not be material".

03:09   Where Apple gets the tantalum for your iPhone
Nobody likes to think his or her iPhone was made from minerals derived from a country where warlords and mass rapists profit from the mines.

So a year ago, Apple made a bold claim: It had audited smelters in its supply chain and none of them used tantalum from war-torn regions in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

While Apple acknowledged that it could not make the same claim for gold, tin and tungsten -- three other important commodities essential to modern electronics but mined in war zones -- the announcement about tantalum was an important step for human rights advocates who have long called for more transparency from international companies.

But how can Apple be so sure?
