23:57   Politics over Bharat Ratna to Sachin unfortunate: Pilot
Corporate Affairs Minister Sachin Pilot today said it was "unfortunate" to do politics over conferring of Bharat Ratna on cricketing great Sachin Tendulkar.

"What I can say in my personal capacity is that it is unfortunate to do politics over Sachin being chosen for the highest civilian honour. Sachin has been doing the country proud by his humility. In fact, Sachin's name has added to the glory of the award," Pilot told reporters at Press Club.

Taking a dig at BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Pilot said, "Modi distorts facts about history and geography during his speeches. Though BJP is boasting about higher turnout at his rallies, it will not reflect in election results".

Pilot expressed hope that the Indian economy will benefit once the global economic scene takes a turn for good in next six-eight months.

18:04   LIVE! Modi juggernaut rolls into Raj: Cong works on divide and rule
Upping the ante against Congress, Narendra Modi today accused it of pursuing a "divide and rule" policy by fanning tensions between Hindus and Muslims.

"Congress has a divisive mentality. It only works on a rule to divide a brother from brother, raise a wall of divide", Modi said at a public meeting in Sawai Madhopur in support of four BJP candidates including erstwhile Jaipur royal family scion Diya Kumari.

"There is a need to identify the character, culture, traditions, and thoughts of Congress now....it works on divisive mentality...they never think of uniting people...they only know how to break... this is there style," he said.

"Congress creates differences between north and south, tensions between Hindu and Muslims...it all proves that it has all along been indulging in vote bank politics," he said.

Modi, who also addressed rallies in Alwar and Bandikui, poked fun at Rahul Gandhi, saying poor attendance at the Congress leader's rally in Delhi on Sunday had forced an embarrassed Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to plead with people not to leave the venue.

"There are rallies where people are told 'stop, don't go; stop, don't go'. And there are rallies where I have to apologise to people because they could not see me" because of huge turnouts, he said in Alwar in the run-up to the December one Assembly elections in Rajasthan.

17:49   Woman prez, speaker, CMs, but empowerment still a distant dream: PM
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said it is a "sad reality" that women in India face discrimination at home and workplace and their empowerment remains a distant goal.

"We had a woman President and now have a woman Speaker of Lok Sabha, a woman leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha and two women chief ministers.

"The President of the largest and oldest political party in India is also a distinguished woman leader who we are privileged to have in our midst. A recent global top 50 businesswomen survey included four Indian women.

"However, all this does not reflect the average reality of women in our country. The sad reality is that women in India face discrimination and hardship at home, school, at their places of work and in public places," he said, speaking at the inaugural function of India's first all-women bank -- Bharatiya Mahila Bank, in Mumbai.

"Women's social, economic and political empowerment remains a distant goal," he said. "We have gathered here to witness the beginning of a unique new institution," Singh said, adding, "the bank will provide financial services predominantly to women and women self-help groups."

17:10   India set to cancel chopper deal with scam-tainted AgustaWestland
India has decided to cancel a scandal-tainted helicopter deal with Anglo-Italian firm AgustaWestland, prejudging the outcome of a meeting on Wednesday between company executives and Defence Ministry officials to discuss the contract, three sources said.

The decision draws a line under a dispute that has embarrassed a government heading into elections under a cloud of corruption scandals, and could re-open the contract to rivals, including United Technologies Corp's Sikorsky Aircraft, EADS' Eurocopter and Lockheed Martin.

Scrapping the 560 million euro ($757.40 million) deal to buy 12 helicopters for top politicians will not necessarily lead to New Delhi blacklisting the firm, sources have said, a move some officials fear would set back efforts to modernise India's military. -- Reuters.

14:42   When the Parliament passed a bill to allow those in jail to contest polls
Here's the genesis of the SC order. In September, negating a Supreme Court order, the Parliament passed a bill that maintains the right of those in jail to contest polls, with the government saying the court verdict was wrong and the Legislature has Constitutional duty to correct it.

The Representation of the People (Amendment and Validation) Bill, 2013 was rushed through in the Lok Sabha and passed within about 15 minutes after a brief discussion.

Some members wanted an elaborate debate on the bill but the overwhelming majority of the House, including Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj, pushed for its passage even without discussion.

The Bill negates the July 10 order of the Supreme Court which held that those in jail cannot vote as per RP Act and hence cannot qualify for contesting elections to Parliament or state legislatures.

Mahesh Gupta alias Sunny (24), Ajay Rai (35) and Narsing Kumar Verma (35), along with two juveniles, who had recently escaped from a correction home, were arrested on Sunday by the Crime Branch of Delhi Police.

According to police, Gupta was the mastermind behind the crime while Narsing was the jeweller who had provided information about the victim.

Two motorcycles, along with two country-made pistols, four live cartridges, one dagger used in commission of the crime as well as the robbed silver ornaments worth Rs. 25 lakh have been recovered from them, police said, adding that efforts were on to trace three more juveniles, who were also allegedly involved in the crime.

13:01   53 per cent of Indian households defecate in open: World Bank
With over 600 million people in India or 53 per cent of Indian households defecating in the open, absence of toilet or latrine is one of the important contributors to malnutrition, a World Bank report has said.

The report that released yesterday on the eve of the first ever UN World Toilet Day, the World Bank said, access to improved sanitation can increase cognition among children.

Currently, more than 2.5 billion people worldwide lack access to toilets, one billion people practice open defecation and 600 million in India openly defecate.

"Our research showed that six-year-olds who had been exposed to India's sanitation programme during their first year of life were more likely to recognise letters and simple numbers on learning tests than those who were not," said Dean Spears, lead author of the paper 'Effects of Early-Life Exposure to Sanitation on Childhood Cognitive Skills'.

The paper studies the effects on childhood cognitive achievement of early life exposure to India's Total Sanitation Campaign, a national scale government programme that encouraged local governments to build and promote use of inexpensive pit latrines.

12:02   US court denies Rajaratnam's bid to reconsider conviction
Jailed billionaire hedge fund founder Raj Rajaratnam's petition seeking reconsideration of his conviction for running one of the biggest insider trading schemes in US history has been rejected by a court in New York.

The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit said in a ruling yesterday that the petition by Rajaratnam for panel rehearing or "for rehearing en banc" is denied.

An en banc hearing would have meant that Rajaratnam's case is heard before a full federal appeals court, instead by a small panel.

09:08   Nepal votes for new Constituent Assembly

Voters in Nepal are going to the polls to elect members of a new assembly tasked with writing a constitution, after years of delay. The vote is the second since a 10-year Maoist insurgency ended in 2006.

No clear winner is expected this time. A previous assembly elected in 2008 was supposed to draft a constitution, following the overthrow of the centuries-old monarchy.

But it was bitterly divided and never accomplished its task. An interim government formed earlier this year by Nepal's major parties has overseen the elections and is led by the Supreme Court's chief judge, Khilraj Regmi. On the eve of the vote, he condemned sporadic violence in different parts of the country and said the security forces would ensure a free and fair election.

01:59   NASA's MAVEN mission set off for Mars
US space agency NASA has launched its latest orbiter to Mars on the hunt for clues about why the Red Planet lost much of its atmosphere.

The probe MAVEN was launched on an Atlas V rocket from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 18:28 GMT.

The 2.4-tonne spacecraft will spend about 10 months en route to the Red Planet, with arrival set for September 2014 and the science mission of the solar-wing paneled orbiter set to begin in November 2014.

MAVEN will study the planets upper atmosphere to understand how the Red Planet lost most of its atmosphere to space over time.

"MAVEN is the first spacecraft devoted to exploring and understanding the Martian upper atmosphere," the US space agency said.

"The spacecraft will investigate how the loss of Mars' atmosphere to space determined the history of water on the surface."

01:55   Zimbabwe's president: I'm no British clone
Zimbabwe's longtime President Robert Mugabe says he doesn't want anyone to be fooled by his impeccable Western style of dress and his precise, teacherly use of English: He is African through and through.

"I am not British, I am not a colonial product because I am a complete Zimbabwean," he told graduates at Great Zimbabwe University near the remains of the 13th Century walled city, for which Zimbabwe, the former colony of Rhodesia, is named. Addressing the students earlier this month, Mugabe had typically harsh words for Africa's former white rulers.

"They think their right is to rob others of their resources," he said. But black Africans have the right to their own natural wealth and must "remain true" to local values after centuries of colonial rule that brought foreign cultures to the continent, he added.

The ascetic, austere Mugabe is a tough critic of the West, but he has been described as an anglophile and is known as a stickler for ceremony and detail. At the graduation, he wore a sash, robe and mortarboard, academic regalia used in some of Britain's most conservative universities.

01:54   Google to pay $17 mn in privacy settlement
Google has agreed to pay $17 million to settle an investigation by US states into its use of unauthorized tracking software on Apple Safari Web browsers, officials said.

New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced the multistate agreement on Google's "unauthorized placement of cookies on computers using Apple Safari Web browsers during 2011 and 2012."

Google last year paid a $22.5 million fine to the US Federal Trade Commission on the same issue. The FTC said Google had agreed with the commission in October 2011 not to place tracking cookies or deliver targeted ads to Safari users, but then went ahead and did so.

The latest settlement includes 37 states and the federal District of Columbia. New York will receive $899,580, Schneiderman said.

"Consumers should be able to know whether there are other eyes surfing the web with them. By tracking millions of people without their knowledge, Google violated not only their privacy, but also their trust," Schneiderman said.
