The 17-year-old alliance between the Janata Dal-United and the Bharatiya Janata Party will come to an end today, reports Vicky Nanjappa

An announcement to this effect will be made following a crucial meeting of the JD-U at 12.30 pm.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who has been vocal about his displeasure following his Gujarat counterpart Narendra Modi's elevation in the BJP, will also convene a cabinet meeting at 11.30 am. It is not clear as yet if the BJP leaders who are part of the coalition would attend the meeting or not.

The BJP in Bihar says that it would wait and watch and also added that the mandate was given to a BJP-JD-U combine and hence if the alliance was breaking, Kumar would have to step down as chief minister. The BJP even rejected an offer by Kumar to discuss the modalities of a split, and insisted that the CM should step down if he breaks the alliance.

There is hectic political activity in Bihar and today may even see Sharad Yadav stepping down as the convenor of the NDA.
