14:55   What makes 'The Hobbit' such an enduring read?
As the 75th anniversary of JRR Tolkien's novel The Hobbit approaches, expert Thomas Shippey asks why it still manages to capture imaginations today.

What has made the book such an enduring success? There are lots of reasons why one would not have expected it to be. Too much poetry! No female characters at all! (How will Jackson get round that one?) A lot of professorial quibbling over words!

But maybe Tolkiens boldest defiance of accepted childrens-fiction practice was that he offered no child figure for the reader to fix on. Its true, the hero Bilbo Baggins is only a little hobbit, so hes a kind of surrogate child, but hes put in positions no child could be expected to identify with, writes Thomas Shippey in The Telegraph.

00:51   42 people murdered a day in South Africa
Forty-two people are murdered a day in South Africa and sex crimes remain high despite small annual falls, statistics showed today, in one of the world's most violent societies.

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa said murders had continued a downward trend since the end of apartheid in 1994 and had been reduced by 27.6 per cent from more than 18,000 recorded eight years ago for the year ended in March.

"We are not there yet, but with the participation of all sectors of society, we are turning the tide against crime," he said, presenting the country's annual crime statistics.

"We must win the battle against crime, in whatever form it manifests itself. Crime affects all the people of our country across class, gender, religion and colour. It is our common enemy and collectively, we shall defeat this scourge."

South Africa remains one of the most dangerous countries in the world outside of conflict zones, with a murder rate surpassed only by Latin American nations embroiled in gruesome battles with narco-traffickers.

00:51   Senators call for strategic pause in Afghanistan
Three top American Senators today demanded "strategic pause" in Afghanistan including halt to drawdown of troops to determine what, if any, changes US should make in order to achieve its goals in Afghanistan.

Observing that President Barack Obama has said that the drawdown of US forces from Afghanistan would be responsive to conditions on the ground, the three Senators - John McCain, Joe Lieberman and Lindsay Graham - said they believe those conditions are now worrisome enough to justify an immediate suspension of further US troop withdrawals at this time.

"The purpose of this 'strategic pause' should be to give our commanders time to evaluate the effects of recent troop withdrawals and to offer their best military advice on how we can achieve our goals in Afghanistan, while preventing further
attacks on our forces and those of our allies. We cannot afford to rush to failure in Afghanistan," they said.
