21:34   SIT tweaked timings of Modi's meetings: Bhatt

Suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt today accused the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team of "deliberately tweaking" timings of the meetings held by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on February 27 and 28, 2002, which he claims to have attended.

"It is now apparent from the report submitted by SIT that certain very crucial portions of my statement, including the timings of extremely consequential meetings with the chief minister Mr Narendra Modi on 27/02/2002 and 28/02/2002, have either been incorrectly recorded or deliberately tweaked by the SIT," said Bhatt in his additional affidavit filed before the National Commission of Minorities today.

"This has been done possibly with the ulterior motive and intent of shielding certain powerful persons including the chief minister Modi, from legal punishment," he said.

The big split in Team Anna?

Former Team Anna member Santosh Hegde said in Bangalore today that he was not party to the decision to target Singh, Pranab Mukhrjee, S M Krishna and other ministers. Anna Hazare himself appeared to distance himself from the move to target Singh and described the Prime Minister as an "honest man" soon after his team put Singh's name on a list of 14 "corrupt" ministers last Saturday. He had said that he will seek clarification from the team.

Hegde added that he was not walking out of Team Anna. "If they want me to go out of Anna's team, then it is another matter," Hegde, who had earlier opposed Team Anna's anti-Congress campaign during Hisar bypolls, said.

To questions on Hazare's views on Singh, Bhushan said most of the documents are in English and Hazare cannot read the language. "So these large number of documents have to be translated into Hindi to enable him to go through it. It is not possible to translate all these documents that fast so that he can read
it. He knew the larger points like which minister has what charges against him and all."

The police had less than a day to organise the security arrangements, say TV reports. There are between 70,000 and 90,000 people inside the stadium. In fact, Mamata was inviting more people inside the stadium just before the victory lap began.

09:03   Air Canada plane makes emergency landing
An Air Canada jet bound for Japan made an emergency landing in Toronto after an engine shut down shortly after takeoff from Pearson International Airport. No injuries were reported.

Police believe that chunks of metal that fell on cars near Pearson International Airport came from the Air Canada Boeing 777 jetliner. Investigators know of four vehicles that were hit by pieces of metal about the size of a cellphone, said Peel regional police Constable George Tudos.

Witnesses reported seeing a plane with smoke coming from one of its engines shortly before police got calls about the falling debris, Tudos said.

"As it (the plane) was travelling away from Pearson we had other complaints stating that debris, consisting of metal objects, was falling from the sky," he said.

Tudos said there were no injuries from the falling debris and stressed that police can't positively say the debris came from the Air Canada plane.

09:00   UK's bid to keep Olympics safe: Radical preacher denied bail
Abu Qatada, the radical cleric and terror suspect facing deportation to Jordan, has been denied bail by a court in London due to the security challenges he might pose during the forthcoming Olympics.

The cleric will remain in prison until his deportation appeal is heard in October, a judge ruled.

Justice Mitting, at the hearing of Special Immigration Appeals Commission, said: "Allowing Qatada bail during heightened security at the Olympic Games would be "exceptionally problematic".

Qatada, who has been contesting British move to deport him to Jordan, where he is accused of involvement in several bomb attacks, has been in jail for over seven years.

In view of the "very high level" of demand in resources during the Olympics, Justice Mitting was told by the Home Office barrister Robin Tam: "As a matter of logical inference, if Abu Qatada were to abscond, either resources would have to be diverted to finding him or finding him would have to be accorded a lower priority".

08:57   When Israeli soldiers screwed up in Jerusalem
Israeli soldiers violated the status quo on the esplanade of the mosques in east Jerusalem by raising Israel's flag, the head of the Islamic Waqf organisation that oversees the compound charged.

"More than 180 soldiers from a special Israeli army unit on Monday raised a large Israeli flag opposite the mosque of the Rock, which is a grave provocation," Sheikh Azzam al-Khatib told AFP.

The sprawling esplanade containing the Al-Aqsa mosque and the adjacent Dome of the Rock in the historic Old City is the third-holiest site in Islam after Saudi Arabia's Mecca and Medina.

It is also the holiest site for Jews, who refer to it as the Temple Mount because it was the location of the Second Temple, destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD.

Sheikh Khatib said the soldiers entered the esplanade during a visit approved and organised by Israeli police. He said he had made a complaint both to the Israeli police and to the Jordanian authorities. Jordan, which has a 1994 peace treaty with Israel, is the custodian of Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem.

The ministry on today targeted McFaul for saying that Russia had offered money to the leader of Kyrgyzstan for removing a US base from its soil, saying his description of this and other issues was "deliberately distorted."

The ministry also accused McFaul of misrepresenting Russia's stance on such issues as the Iranian nuclear standoff and North Korea's nuclear programme.

Asked about the attack on his Twitter, McFaul avoided responding directly, saying he is "still learning the craft of speaking more diplomatically."
