Affirming the BJP's strong support for a separate Telangana, senior party leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj tonight said the NDA would not team up with any party which is opposed to the cause. 

Swaraj was speaking at a public meeting organised as part of the BJP's campaign for the Parkal assembly by-poll, scheduled to be held on June 12 in Andhra Pradesh's Telangana region. 

Hitting out at the TRS, Swaraj said the sub-regional party was deceiving the people of Telangana by aligning with parties like the Congress and the TDP.

22:54   Hijacked explosive laden truck found in Jharkhand
The police today recovered a hijacked 10-wheeler truck of the Indian ExplosivesLtd carrying 15 metric tonnes of powerful explosives in Hazaribagh district. 

Superintendent of Police Pankaj Kamboj said the police raided jungles of Bishnugarh following a tip-off, and found the explosive-laden truck there. 

Some anti-socials hijacked the truck for selling the explosives to Maoists and other criminal elements, he said. 

Two of the hijackers were arrested and efforts were on to trace others and rescue the khalasi, Kamboj said.

22:48   Dreaded ultra arrested in Jharkhand
Five ultras, including most wanted Naxal Laka Pahan, have been arrested in Jharkhand, a senior police officer said today. 

"Laka Pahan, the area commander, was among the five arrested from Anidih village yesterday. Laka Pahan is wanted in over 20 Naxal-related cases in Khunti and Ranchi districts," Inspector General of Police M S Bhatia told a news conference. 

"We will recommend to the police headquarters to suitably reward the police personnel involved in catching Laka Pahan, who has been a terror in Khunti and bordering areas," he added.

22:46   Accused in Ranvir Sena chief murder case surrenders
An accused in the murder of Ranvir Sena chief Brahmeshwar Singh alias Mukhiyaji today surrendered before the Bhojpur district police chief M R Naik, a senior police official said. 

Sonu Chaudhary alias Mughal gave himself up at Nawada police station before Naik and was being questioned by the Special Investigation Team in connection with his alleged involvement in the Ranvir Sena chief's murder case.

22:45   Prohibitory order imposed in Mathura
Fearing clashes over the successorship issue of late Baba Jai Gurudev, the Mathura district administration has imposed prohibitory orders, police said today. 

Nearly 350 policemen were deployed around the Baba's ashram on the Delhi-Agra highway, they said. 

To maintain law and order in the city, Section 144 of the CrPC has been imposed in the district, they said.

22:43   Congress blames Modi for unemployment in Gujarat
The Opposition Congress today claimed that most of the MoUs signed by the Gujarat government in the last ten years have failed to materialise, even as the number of unemployed youth has swelled during this period. 

"There are about 30 lakh unemployed youths despite Chief Minister Narendra Modi's claim of MoUs worth Rs 39 lakh crore being signed during the five Vibrant GujaratGlobal Investors Summits held in the last ten years. Only six per cent of the total worth of MoUs signed are in implementation state," said former Gujarat unit Congress president Siddharth Patel. 

He was addressing a rally of jobless youths held in Mehsana district.

Scotching media speculation about her foray into Maharashtra politics through a specially carved out party front, NCP MP Supriya Sule today asserted that she was happy working as a parliamentarian. 

Political circles are rife with speculations that the NCP, led by her father and party supremo Sharad Pawar, is launching her into state politics through the 'Rashtravadi Yuvati Congress', a new cell for women in the age group of 18 to 35, which will be unveiled on the 13th Foundation Day of the party tomorrow. 

"I am very happy working in the Parliament. It's a huge exposure and I am very happy," Supriya told reporters.

22:30   Mumbai-Pune Expressway traffic disrupted by oil spill
Traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway was thrown out of gear following a pile-up involving several cars, due to oil spill near the Kamshet tunnel this afternoon, police said. 

A number of vehicles travelling to Mumbai from Pune rammed into one another, while a few others banged into the road dividers and the tunnel wall, police said. 

According to them, due to the oil spilled on the road, drivers lost control of their vehicles, which resulted in the multiple pile-up.

22:27   New York Hindu temple head gets protection order
A US court has issued a restraining order against an Indian-origin Long Island pharmacist after he assaulted a disabled 72-year-old president of New York Kali Mandir Hindu Temple. 

Suman Saha was issued a temporary order of protection from Nassau County Criminal Court following his alleged assault on Ajoy Nayak, president of the Baldwin, NewYork-based Hindu temple. 

The elderly Nayak, who is a left-leg amputee, had recently been elected to the post. The order prohibits Saha from having any contact with Nayak. According to court documents, Saha was accused of assaulting Nayak.

22:26   Pak SC rejects appeal for larger bench to hear CJ's son's case
Pakistan's Supreme Court today rejected a request for the formation of a larger bench to hear a suo moto case regarding the alleged payment of about Rs 400 million by a real estate tycoon to Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry's son. 

A bench comprising Justices Jawwad S Khwaja and Khilji Arif Hussain, which is currently hearing the matter, rejected the request made by Zahid Bukhari, the counsel for tycoon Malik Riaz Hussain. 

The Chief Justice initiated the suo moto proceedings but recused himself from the case against his son Arsalan Iftikhar earlier this week.

22:26   Four policemen shot dead in Pakistan's Quetta
The ongoing wave of violence continued unabated in the Quetta, capital of Baluchistan province, when four policemen were killed by unknown gunmen today. 

"The four policemen were on two motorcycles on their routine patrol along the railway track when unknown armed men opened fire at them," Deputy Inspector General (Operations) Qazi Wahid said. 

"The slain police officials were deputed there following the request of railway officials," he added. All the four policemen were killed on the spot, while the assailants managed to escape on motorbikes.

20:39   NRHM scam: UP govt suspends 20 health officials
The Uttar Pradesh government today suspended 20 senior health officials after their names cropped up in an ongoing CBI probe into the embezzlement of over Rs 10,000 crore of the National Rural Health Mission fund. 

"The government has suspended 20 doctors, including those holding the additional chief medical officer's rank, whose names were given by the CBI during the inquiry into the NRHM scam," said Health Minister Ahmad Hasan.

20:38   Media, not BJP, projecting Modi as PM candidate: Yashwant
Senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha today said it was the media and not the party which has been projecting Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate.  

"A section of the media had been after Narendra Modi after the riots in Gujarat. Now it is projecting him as the prime minister. The BJP has not decided on it (the party's prime ministerial candidate)," Sinha told reporters. 

Pressed for a categorical answer, Sinha said, "Don't worry, everything will come before you."

20:37   Dalai Lama, Russell Brand to share stage
Comedian Russell Brand is all set to share the stage with Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama in Manchester. 

The Tibet House Trust has announced that the Buddhist leader will address thousands of young people at Manchester's MEN Arena on June 16 and Brand will join the religious figure as the host of the event. 

The Forgetting Sarah Marshall star has been a vocal supporter of the Tibetan cause.

18:39   Centre moves SC over sub-quota for minorities
The Union government has moved the Supreme Court challenging the Andhra Pradesh high court order quashing the 4.5 per cent reservation for minorities within the 27 percent OBC quota in central educational institutions such as IITs.

The apex court will hear the government plea on Monday. 

A bench of justices K S Radhakrishnan and J S Khehar will examine the Centre's appeal, which has contended that the high court had taken an erroneous view in striking down the provision.

18:39   China to open more sections of Great Wall for tourists
China will open more sections of its iconic Great Wall to accommodate an increasing number of visitors for one of the world's most famous tourist attractions, official media reported today. 

The move was aimed at reducing the load on Great Wall sections that are currently open to tourists in Beijing, such as Badaling, Mutianyu, Simatai and Juyongguan. 

"These Great Wall sections are overloaded on weekends and holidays," said an official, adding that some people have climbed the closed sections of the Great Wall, which has also damaged the national cultural heritage.

18:34   Egypt ad asks people to stay away from foreigners
The Egyptian state television has come out with an adverstisement warning people against talking to foreigners who could turn out to be spies, a move slammed by social media users who say it will only help increase levels of xenophobia in society. 

The ad features a man entering a cafe where a group of young people are sitting and chatting. The "foreign spy" joins them as they talk about the political and economic situation in the country. 

A voice-over says the spy is receiving "valuable information" from normal people talking about problems in Egypt, such as traffic and fuel shortages. 

Twitter users mocked the commercial, particularly a bit in which the "spy" says the word "really" in English.

18:34   BJP seeks probe in Coalgate scam
The BJP today said a letter to Team Anna on the coal mining issue is not the need of the hour and the government should order a full-fledged probe into the scam to bring out the truth. 

"We feel that just a letter from the PMO to Team Anna on Coalgate is not enough. A thorough probe is required. Even when the 2G Spectrum scam took place the PMO and Cabinet ministers said there was zero loss," BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain told reporters. 

He maintained that it was the BJP which exposed this scam when its MPs Hansraj Ahir and Prakash Javadekar raised this issue and went to the CVC.

18:33   Karnataka govt may take over Nithyananda's ashram
The Karnataka government was planning to take over the ashram of controversial self-styled godman Nithyananda at Bidadi near Bangalore, taking into view alleged objectionable activities taking place there, Law Minister Suresh Kumar said today. 

"The government is mulling to take control of the administration of Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam situated at Bidadi for alleged objectionable activities taking place there," he told reporters. 

He said the government was also planning to appoint an administrator for the Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam, located in Ramanagara district. 

Kumar's comments came in the wake of a clash between activists of a Kannada organisation protesting against Nithyananda and his disciples at the ashram yesterday.

18:33   Taliban bomber kills 4 French soldiers in Afghanistan
Four French soldiers were killed in an attack on a convoy of NATO-led troops in eastern Afghanistan by a Taliban suicide bomber in a burqa. 

Three soldiers were in a serious condition, said officials. 

"It is with the greatest emotion that I share the grief of the families. Today all of France is affected," said French President Francois Hollande

17:07   CBI custody for arms dealer Abhishek Verma, wife
Arms dealer Abhishek Verma and his wife, arrested for allegedly receiving money from a Swiss arms company to delist them from the companies blacklisted by Indian government, were sent to seven-day Central Bureau of Investigation custody by a Delhi court today.  

Verma and his wife Ancia Neascu were placed under arrest on  Friday by CBI after they failed to give convincing answers to the investigation agency which registered a fresh case against him on Friday.

Verma, who had been earlier arrested by CBI in connection with alleged fake passport and leaking of secret commercial information from Naval war room to foreign companies, was called to the agency headquarters on Friday morning along with his wife.

The duo were extensively questioned by the sleuths regarding transactions of funds between Ganton India and Ganton USA, which are claimed to be his front companies, and about his business relationships with estranged associate C Edmon Allen who has leveled series of allegations against him with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation.

16:31   IIT-Delhi likely to reject Sibal's one test plan
After Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur rejected the Centre's 'one-nation one-test' proposal and decided to conduct its own entrance exam from next year, IIT-Delhi alumni association is pushing IIT-Delhi to follow the suit.

A decision is expected to be taken next week when the senate of IIT-Delhi meet in New Delhi next week.

"In all likelihood, IIT-Delhi senate seems to be geared up to follow the suit of IIT-Kanpur senate," IIT Delhi alumni president Somnath Bharti told PTI.In its Friday's meeting, the senate of IIT-Kanpur had said.

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal on May 28 had announced that from 2013, aspiring candidates for IITs and other central institutes like NITs and IIITs will have to sit under a new format of common entrance test, which will also take plus two board results into consideration.

With the government ruling out their demands, Team Anna today said their indefinite fast fromJuly 25 will go on as planned and alleged that the government was playing with words and has left questions unanswered on the issue of corruption.

Team Anna member Manish Sisodia said the government was trying to fool the people by passing off corruption using "hollow words" like "progressive laws" will be enacted.

"Our protest from July 25 will go on as planned. The government is trying to show off and fool people by using hollow words like progressive laws will enacted," he told PTI.

Sisodia said the activists have raised pertinent questions regarding coal block allocation and other corruption charges against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his 14 cabinet colleagues."The letter the PMO has written to Anna Hazare does not\ give any proof that the allegations we have raised are false," he said.

Sanju Katiyar (Independent), withdrew their nominations leaving Dimple the only candidate in the electoral fray, Additional Electoral Officer Ramesh Chand Yadav said.

After the Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party decided against fielding their nominees and the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate failed to file his nomination papers at the last minute, Dimple was expected to get a walkover on the seat vacated by her husband Akhilesh Yadav when he became the chief minister and was elected to the Legislative Council.

Reacting to remarks by the Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office V Narayanaswamy, Team Anna today said the government was trying to cover up coal allocation matter.

The PMO rejected SIT probe into coal allocation, which was demanded by Team Anna. 

The PMO has written a letter to Anna Hazare rejecting all corruption charges levelled against the PM over the alleged irregularities in the allocation of coal blocks.

Slamming Team Anna, Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office V Narayanaswamy said, "Anna Hazare is surrounded by anti-national elements."

The Prime Minister's Office today wrote to Team Anna on coal blocks allocation. "Allegations against the prime minister are based on media reports. Coal charges are baseless. The CAG report on coal allocation has not been tabled in the Parliament yet. The government will respond to charges once report is tabled," wrote Narayanaswamy said. "All decision on coal blocks allocation were as per the law, No rules have been flouted," he added. 

Team Anna members Prashant and Shanti Bhushan's allegations had accused the PM of corruption for the first time when they referred to a draft CAG report on allocation blocks when he held charge of coal ministry.

Rejecting Team Anna's allegations of corruption against him, the PM had declared he will quit public life if the charges on coal block allotments are proved.

13:17   MP Sachin turns down govt bungalow in Delhi
Rajya Sabha member and cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has decided against taking a bungalow allotted to him by the government in New Delhi.

"I am not keen on staying in a government house. It will be a waste of the taxpayers' money. I would prefer to stay in a hotel in Delhi on my own expenses," Tendulkar told CNN-IBN. "I do not need a bungalow just too stay for few days.'

Tendulkar had been allotted 5 Tughlak Lane bungalow, a type VII accommodation normally given to cabinet-rank ministers. The stately house in Lutyen's zone is just opposite the house of Rahul Gandhi, who stays at 12 Tughlak Lane

12:35   Father kills Sonipat girl for 'honour'
A Std XII student, was killed by her father in Sonipat on the outskirts of New Delhi. The girl wanted to marry a boy from the same village.

When she did not bow down to family pressure, her father Brajesh Singh used her dupatta to strangle her and then turned himself in to the police, reports NDTV

Singh, who works as a security guard, in a factory told the police, how he tried to persuade his daughter to give up on marrying the boy, and even stopped her from going to school midway, while she was in class 12. When nothing worked, he killed her. Her mother says the boy her daughter wanted to marry was like an uncle, which is why they were against it.

12:27   Spain may seek bailout from EU soon
Spain appeared to be on the verge of seeking a bailout from the European Union this weekend to avert a meltdown of its troubled banking sector.

Government officials in various European capitals and EU authorities in Brussels said on Friday evening that they are standing by to act immediately if the Spanish government finally makes a request for EU aid.

However, no conference calls of euro zone finance ministers or other meetings are planned for Saturday as reported by some agencies earlier, the officials said.

Various estimates suggested that Spain, euro-zone's fourth largest economy, might need between 60 billion euro and 100 billion euro to prop up the country's banking sector, crippled by its massive involvement in the real estate bubble in 2008.

The euro zone bailout fund, the European Financial stability Facility, has sufficient capital to meet Spain's immediate requirements to capitalise the distressed banks, the officials said.

11:33   Insider trading: Rajat Gupta likely to testify
Former Goldman Sachs director Rajat Gupta is likely to testify next week in his defence at insider trading trial, his lawyer told the court as the prosecution rested its case and the defence presented a video testimony from top Berkshire Hathaway executive India-born Ajit Jain.

After the jury was dismissed on Friday for the weekend, Gupta's lawyer Gary Naftalis told Judge Jed Rakoff in Manhattan federal court about the possibility of Gupta taking the witness stand in his trial, which began on May 21.

"It was represented to me at the sidebar that Gupta would likely take the stand, given the background of what the court has said," Rakoff asked Gupta's defense lawyers.

Naftalis replied that, "I can say that it's highly likely that my client will testify."The revelation about Gupta testifying came as his defence team discussed with the judge its schedule and witness line-up after the prosecution said they were resting their case.

As Pranab Mukherjee's name as the United Progressive Alliance candidate for the President's post gathered further momentum, he said, "One can't become a president by just wishing.  The party (Congress) will take a call on presidential candidate."

UPA sources said Congress President Sonia Gandhi, who has been authorised by the party's Working Committee to pick the candidate, is likely to make the announcement around June 15. The Congress is now reaching out to allies outside the UPA for consensus on Mukerjee's nomination.

The Congress is in touch with the Samajwadi Party and is expected to be speaking to key ally and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee soon, according to a CNN-IBN report.

The West Bengal Chief Minister had earlier expressed reservations on Mukhrejee as a Presidential candidate.

10:16   India positioning to fill post-US vacuum in Kabul
New Delhi's ambassador to Washington Nirupama Rao made clear on Friday that India is positioning itself to fill a vacuum that will be created in 2014 when most US and western troops leave Afghanistan.

From a range of economic development projects to training Afghan security officers to combating a Taliban resurgence, Rao says India intends to prevent "a regression in Afghanistan to the situation it was before 2001."

India and other nations in southeast Asia "have a stake in peace, stability, and prosperity" in Afghanistan, Rao said during a forum in Washington. "Afghanistan does represent a security challenge for us."

During talks in India this week, US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta urged Indian leaders to take on a larger role in Afghanistan's future. Nancy Powell, US ambassador to India, applauded a recent announcement that Afghan security forces would be trained by Indian officers on Indian soil.

09:39   Leh: 400 tourists trapped in landslides rescued
The army has rescued around 400 civilians trapped in landslides in Khardung La in Ladakh. Situated at 18, 380 feet, Khardung La is said to be the highest motorable mountain pass in the world.  

A joint operation by the Army and the police rescued the civilians trapped in 150 vehicles last night. Among those trapped were women and children, reports NDTV.

Zoya Akhtar's wish that the technical team behind Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara should win awards at the IIFA this year has been fulfilled as the film scooped up five trophies in the category.

Zoya herself won the best screenplay award for the film. 

Bosco-Caesar won Best choreography for the song Senorita, Carlos Catalan won the best Cinematography trophy, Anand Subaya won for editing and Arjun Mathur took home the best sound mixing award.

Close on the heels of ZNMD was the visual effects magic Ra.One, which grabbed awards for special effects (Red Chilles Entertainment), Sound design (Resul Pokutty and Amrit Pritam Dutta), production design (Saby Cyril) and song recording (Vijay Dayal).

Blockbuster The Dirty Picture was also not left behind as it won three awards this evening -- costume design (Niharika Khan), best make-up (Vikram Gaikwad) and best dialogue (Rajat Arora).

Singham won the best action award, while AR Rahman was given the best background score award for Rockstar. The maestro was not present to receive his award.

The awards were announced at the IIFA Rocks, an evening full of fashion and music as many Bollywood artistes performed and walked the ramp for designers.

01:42   Fort Hood shooter's beard stops court hearing
A hearing to consider pre-trial motions in the murder case against an Army psychiatrist charged in the Fort Hood shooting rampage has been delayed after defendant Maj Nidal Hasan showed up in court wearing a beard.

The trial judge, Col Gregory Gross, said Hasan's appearance at the hearing today violated Army regulations and is considered a disruption to the proceedings. 

Gross says the hearing will be delayed until the near future when Hasan either complies with military grooming standards or watches the hearing from outside the courtroom on a video feed. Hasan's lawyers say they'll seek an exception to the grooming rule on religious grounds.

Hasan faces the death penalty if convicted of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder in the November 2009 attack.

01:39   678 young cadets to pass out of IMA on Saturday
A total of 678 Gentleman Cadets (GCs), including 21 from friendly nations, will pass out from the prestigious Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehra Dun on Saturday. 

Bhanu Pratap Singh Mankotia has been selected for the prestigious 'Sword of Honour' award for best all-round performance, IMA Commandant Lt Gen Manvendra Singh said.

Manokita will also be awarded with a gold medal.

The silver medal for standing second in the merit order in regular course will be given to Sandip Kumar Yadav. 

Udaybhan Singh Chandel has been selected for the bronze medal.

01:37   Pak origin cabbie jailed in US for Al Qaeda links
A Pakistani-born taxi driver was sentenced to 7 1/2 years in prison today in Chicago for trying to send money to a terrorist with alleged links to Al Qaeda. 

Before his punishment was handed down, Raja Lahrasib Khan asked the judge for mercy.

"I made a bad decision. I did something for which I am ashamed," Khan told the federal courtroom. His wife bowing her head and wept as he spoke. 

Khan, 58, pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of attempting to provide material support to terrorism. His plea
agreement with prosecutors recommended a five- to eight-year sentence  well short of the 15-year maximum.

Authorities arrested Khan in 2010 and accused him of taking steps to send cash to Pakistan-based terrorist leader Ilyas Kashmiri after Kashmiri said he needed money for explosives. Khan believed Kashmiri was getting orders from Osama bin Laden, prosecutors said.

Khan, who became a US citizen in 1988, sent $950 in 2009 to an individual in Pakistan for delivery to Kashmiri; he also took $1,000 from an undercover agent and said it would be used to buy weapons and possibly other supplies, prosecutors alleged.

01:36   Greece earns 1-1 draw against Poland at Euro 2012
Dimitris Salpigidis earned Greece a 1-1 draw with co-host Poland today in the opening match of the European Championship.

The substitute striker knocked in a loose ball in the 51st minute, only six minutes after coming on at halftime. 

Robert Lewandowski had given Poland the lead by heading in a goal in the 17th minute. 

Both teams finished with 10 men, and Greece missed a chance to take a lead when Giorgos Karagounis missed a late penalty after Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was sent off for taking down Salpigidis in the area in the 69th.

Greece defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos was the first to go, picking up yellow cards in the 35th and 44th.

Both teams now have one point in Group A, which also includes Russia and the Czech Republic
