West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today ruled out granting SEZ status to Infosys, sought by the IT major, in line with the state's land policy, but gave an assurance that the company would get all the benefits associated with an SEZ.

''I want Infosys to come and I have full sympathy for it. I will give all the benefits it wants. Whatever benefits it is getting within an SEZ project, I shall give them if it asks, provided they are within my capacity and it does not press for the SEZ nomenclature,'' Banerjee said.

''If I formulate a law and a policy that I shall not allow SEZ, then how can I relax it for an individual? I was against SEZ and I shall be against it in future. We have prepared a land policy and our stand is in line with it," she said in an interview to a TV channel.

15:36   Petrol price hike by Rs 4/l, diesel by Rs 2/litre likely

Just in: The price of petrol is likely to rise by Rs 4 per litre, and diesel by Rs 2 per litre, say TV reports.

This is what Union minister for petroleum said on February 21.

"I don't know whether I should be happy at becoming a petroleum minister or not. There is pressure from the public, the opposition parties and my colleagues in the Congress all the time not to hike diesel, kerosene and LPG though the oil companies are incurring huge losses to the tune of 1.5 lakh crore rupees (1.5 trillion rupees).

"And elections are always round the corner in the country. If elections are the criteria (not to raise prices) we can never hike fuel prices as there are polls every year in India, the world's biggest democracy," Reddy said.

He admitted that the increase in fuel prices was a cause of concern and that there was no choice but to raise fuel prices as per international standards.

11:20   Oz paper calls Team India rabble, Sachin pathetic

An Australian newspaper today slammed the Indian cricket team as a "rabble with no redeeming features" and lashed out at Sachin Tendulkar's remonstration
of being blocked by Brett Lee in his run-out in the triangular series match as "woeful".

A write-up in 'Daily Telegraph' said that the Indians should be ashamed of themselves as they had "treated the greater game with scant respect".

"Thank goodness the game against Sri Lanka in Hobart will be India's last on this tour -- barring some major mathematical quirk of results which will see them make the finals. India cannot go home soon enough to their bulging bank accounts and flat, grassless wickets," the write-up said.

"Sachin Tendulkar's run out for 14 at the SCG typified India's tour. Pathetic. To remonstrate that he had been blocked by Brett Lee when they barely touched was just woeful. Tendulkar was not forced to alter course and he gave up
attempting to make his ground.

"He may once have been the greatest modern cricketer in the world and India the new arrogant financial force in the game, but on and off the field this rabble will go home with no redeeming features. It was yet another example of India treating the greater game with scant respect," it said.
