Brahmaputra crosses danger mark

The mighty Brahmaputra crossed the danger mark at several places in Assam on Friday, inundating vast areas and forcing thousands of people to move to safer places, official reports said.

The affected districts were Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, North Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Sibsagar.

Reports said all the rivers had been rising alarmingly following incessant rains in the catchment areas for the past few days.

The water level in the Brahmaputra crossed its danger mark at Neamatighat in Jorhat district. The river had also breached its Dhansiri embankment.

In Majuli river island, the situation is critical and large areas have been inundated, disrupting surface communication and forcing the people to move to higher places.
