Bus strike called off

The week-long agony of New Delhi commuters ended this morning after about 4,000 Blueline buses returned to the streets following an agreement between the strikers and the government.

School children, however, continued to face difficulties as most contract buses assigned for school duties did not turn up.

Claiming that 70 per cent of the buses were back on the roads in the last few days, Transport Minister Rajendra Gupta said State Transport Association president Ramesh Dalal, who has been spearheading the agitation, had called him this morning, informing the minister that he too was calling off the strike.

The decision comes following an agreement between the government and the striking bus operators that the permits would henceforth be issued to the operators in the name of a co-operative federation and not in individual names.

The bus operators had been demanding renewal of contracts for another five years and transfer of ownership on power of attorney basis.
