22:37   Tech lead of Kerala financial firm held for embezzling Rs 20 crore
The Kerala police arrested a 40-year-old woman, who was the tech lead in a well-known financial institution for allegedly embezzling around Rs 20 crore from the company over a period of five years.

The police said Kollam native Dhanya Mohan, has been accused of siphoning off Rs 19.94 crore since 2019 by diverting funds through the loan application of a Thrissur-based non-banking financial company where she had been working in a senior position for nearly two decades.

She was working as an assistant general manager and tech lead at Manappuram Comptech and Consultants Ltd, the IT product and services arm of the  Manappuram Group.

The fraud came to light after the institution was recently alerted about a huge transaction through her account during an audit.

"We received the complaint from the company on July 23. We had started the investigation and as we were zeroing in on the accused who had absconded, she surrendered at a police station in Kollam district on Friday evening," a senior police official from Thrissur told PTI on Saturday.

It seems like she created fake online accounts in the loan app of the bank and transferred money to her five personal accounts over the years, the official said.

The police said recently, in an audit, the company detected huge transactions and sought explanation from her to which she didn't have any satisfactory answers. -- PTI

Refuting allegations made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that Mamata spoke her full time and her mic was not switched off in between at the NITI Aayog's governing council meeting on Saturday.

The controversy erupted when Mamata walked out of the meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and claimed that she was unfairly stopped midway in her speech despite being the sole representative of the opposition.

Sitharaman, who was present in the meeting, in a post on X said, "She (Mamata) spoke her full time. The screen in front of our tables kept showing the time. A few other CMs spoke beyond their allotted time. On their own request, extra time was allowed without any fuss. Mikes were not switched off, not for anybody, particularly, not for CM, WB. Mamata ji has chosen to spread falsehood. I was happy she attended."

"Was happier when she said she is speaking for Bengal and in fact for the entire opposition. I may agree or disagree with what she had to say. But now with her saying baseless things outside, I can only conclude that she is making an effort to keep I.N.D.I alliance happy." -- PTI

09:36   Airfares fly as long holiday week drives demand
Deepak Patel/Business Standard

The average economy-class fare on major routes in the country around the long Rakshabandhan weekend in August has jumped by up to 46 per cent amid high demand.

The long weekend falls between August 15 and 19, with Independence Day on Thursday (August 15) and Rakshabandhan on Monday (August 19).

According to Ixigo's data, reviewed by Business Standard, the average fare for the Bengaluru-Kochi route is Rs 3,446 for the August 14-20 period, and it is 46.3 per cent higher than the corresponding period last year. The average fare for the Bengaluru-Mumbai route is Rs 3,969 for the August 14-20 period -- 37.6 per cent higher than in the corresponding period last year.

Industry sources say a significant number of planes in India continue to be grounded due to engine issues, supply-chain problems, or financial difficulties.

IndiGo, India's largest carrier, said on Friday about 70 of its 382 planes were grounded.

Therefore, the number of flights has not increased at a fast rate, leading to a lack of capacity growth on various major routes.

For example, the number of flights per week on the Bengaluru-Kochi route in August this year is almost the same as last year.

Similarly, the number of weekly flights on the Bengaluru-Mumbai route has reduced by 4.8 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y) to 472 in August, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium.

"Long weekends tend to attract higher air fares ... The capacity increase has been limited in Indian skies and such long weekends lead to specific sectors seeing a sudden spurt, which is beyond the capacity added by airlines," Ameya Joshi, an aviation researcher and founder of the aviation blog Network Thoughts, told Business Standard.

The number of flights between Delhi and Pune has remained at about 160 per week and has not increased between August last year and this year, according to Cirium.

The average fare for the Delhi-Pune route was Rs 5,257 for the August 14-20 period -- 22.6 per cent higher than in the corresponding period last year.

Jyoti Mayal, president of the Travel Agents Association of India, told Business Standard as the demand was growing, Indian carriers were finding it hard to get enough planes to accommodate the travellers' rush.

"The industry is facing serious challenges in scaling up capacity to match the demand. The airfare for flights operating between Udaipur and major cities such as Delhi, Jaipur, and Mumbai has seen a notable increase and on the occasion of Rakshabandhan, the flight fares have nearly doubled," she noted.

08:42   Trump was indeed struck by bullet, confirms FBI
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Friday confirmed that former United States president Donald Trump was indeed struck with a bullet in the ear during an assassination attempt on July 13, clearing up conflicting accounts about what caused the former president's injuries after a gunman opened fire at a Pennsylvania rally.

"What struck former President Trump in the ear was a bullet, whether whole or fragmented into smaller pieces, fired from the deceased subject's rifle," the agency said in a statement.

The statement from the FBI marked the most definitive law enforcement account of Trump's injuries and followed ambiguous comments earlier in the week from Director Christopher Wray that appeared to cast doubt on whether Trump had actually been hit by a bullet.

Wray testified earlier this week that there was still "some question" about what grazed Trump's right ear during the assassination attempt at his rally in Pennsylvania earlier this month, reported CBS News

The shooting at Trump's rally on July 13 shocked the nation, resulting in the death of one attendee and leaving two others seriously injured. The assailant, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, allegedly fired a shot that grazed Trump's ear from a rooftop position with a clear line of sight to the stage.

The FBI swiftly labelled the incident as an act of domestic terrorism and an attempted assassination, although the motive behind Crooks's actions remained unclear.

Earlier on Friday, Republican Ronny Jackson of Texas, who served as physician to former President Donald Trump at the White House, said that Trump was hit by a bullet in his right ear.

Jackson wrote in a memorandum to "concerned citizens of the United States" that was shared on social media that he has continued to monitor Trump's health following the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.

"The would-be assassin fired multiple rounds from a relatively close distance using a high-powered rifle, with one bullet striking the former president, and now the Republican nominee for president, in his right ear," Jackson stated, according to CBS News

He said he has reviewed Trump's medical records from Butler Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for a "gunshot wound to the right ear," and agreed with the initial assessment and treatment from the medical staff at the hospital.

"There is absolutely no evidence that it was anything other than a bullet," Jackson wrote. He said that Trump is "rapidly recovering" from the wound and doing "extremely well."

00:44   Tension at Bengaluru rly station over meat shipment
Tension prevailed at the Bengaluru City Railway Station when a consignment of meat weighing about three tonnes loaded in about 150 cartons reached here from Jaipur in a train on Friday night, railway sources said.

Puneeth Kerehalli, a cow vigilante, earlier jailed on murder charge, claimed it was dog meat.

However, meat dealer Abdul Razzaq, who had ordered the meat, dismissed the charge.

The consignment was ordered legally and it is not dog meat but sheep meat, he said.

"We have legal documents to prove it. One can see the tail of the animal that was slaughtered. It's sheep and not dog," the meat trader said.

He alleged that Kerehalli wanted to make money by levelling false accusation.

Due to the commotion, a large number of people gathered there, and seeing the situation, police have been deployed. -- PTI

00:43   Gruesome details emerge from CCTV footage showing woman being stabbed in Bengaluru
Two days after a woman from Bihar was found murdered with her throat slit in a paying guest accommodation at Koramangala here on July 23, CCTV footage of the said incident emerged on Friday purportedly showing gruesome details of the crime.

According to the police, the assailant sneaked and killed 24-year-old Kriti Kumari on July 23 night.

The murderer has not been arrested yet.

The police sources said the victim was staying with another woman. A few days ago, Kriti Kumari's roommate had moved out of the paying guest accommodation. It is suspected that she had gone to stay with her boyfriend.

On July 23, the woman returned to the PG to stay with Kriti Kumari.

Sources suspect that the assailant had doubts that Kriti Kumari could be instrumental behind the change of her roommate's mind.

The footage shared by the police shows that the man walked into the corridor of the paying guest holding a polythene bag.

He then knocked on the door and dragged the woman out.

The victim resisted the attack but was soon overpowered by the murderer, who slit her throat and ran away. -- PTI
