Govt has awakened aspirations of SCs, STs: Prez

President Droupadi Murmu is addressing members of both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha in a joint session, marking the beginning of Parliament's budget session.

This is President Murmu's first budget session speech since assuming office in July last year.

Here are some huighlights of the speech:

- We will have to make an India which is self reliant. The 25-year period of Amrit Kaal is golden era of independence and time to build a developed India

- In nearly nine years of my government, people of India have witnessed many positive changes for first time

- Biggest change that has happened today is confidence of every Indian is on top and world's view towards India has changed

- My government has awakened the aspirations of the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes. Now that basic facilities are reaching them, these people are able to see new dreams

- My government is of the clear opinion that corruption is the biggest enemy of democracy and social justice. To seize the property of fugitive economic offenders, my government passed the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act

- Earlier, there was a long wait for tax refund. Today, refund is received within a few days of filing Income Tax Return

- Today, along with transparency, dignity of taxpayers is also being ensured through GST

- The government has worked for every class without any discrimination. It has always kept country's interest paramount, showed will to completely change policy and strategy.
