The online common entrance examination, the first level of screening in the recruitment procedure for Agniveers, junior commissioned officers and others, commenced across the county on Monday, officials said.

President Droupadi Murmu will be on a four-day visit to Himachal Pradesh from Tuesday during which the 'Rashtrapati Niwas', one of the presidential retreats, in Mashobra will be opened for public viewing, an official statement said on Monday.

Last month, she had opened another presidential retreat, 'Rashtrapati Nilayam' in Telangana's Secunderabad to the public.

President Murmu will visit Himachal Pradesh from April 18 to 21 and stay at the 'Rashtrapati Niwas', Mashobra, said the statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The President will inaugurate a tulip garden at Mashobra on Tuesday.

On the same evening, she will attend a civic reception to be hosted in her honour by the Himachal Pradesh government at the Raj Bhavan, Shimla, the statement said.

On April 19, the President will interact with the officer trainees of Indian Audit and Accounts Service at the National Academy of Audit and Accounts in Shimla, it said.

She will also grace the 26th convocation of Himachal Pradesh University in Shimla.

The President visits The Retreat at least once a year and the core office shifts to that place for the duration of the visit.

A thousand feet higher than the Shimla Ridge Top, The Retreat is located in picturesque surroundings.

The architectural pattern and the natural beauty of the place have made it a tourist attraction in Shimla.

The redeeming feature of this building is that it is purely a wooden structure with dajji wall construction, according to the Rashtrapati Bhavan's website.

20:10   Sunak faces probe over wife's business interest
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is facing a watchdog inquiry under his parliamentary declaration of interest obligations related to a Budget policy that could benefit his wife, Akshata Murty, through her business interest in a childcare firm, it emerged on Monday.

The inquiry has been opened by the UK's Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, an independent officer of the House of Commons in charge of looking at evidence if individual British members of Parliament are feared to have broken a rule under the Code of Conduct'.

The active inquiries on the watchdog's list include one opened on Sunak, 42, last Thursday under Paragraph 6 of the rules of conduct, as Downing Street said ministerial interests were 'transparently declared'.

Members must always be open and frank in declaring any relevant interest in any proceeding of the House or its Committees, and in any communications with Ministers, Members, public officials or public office holders, states Paragraph 6.

According to the BBC, the inquiry relates to the British Indian leader's wife's interest in Koru Kids Ltd, which is likely to benefit from a new pilot scheme announced in the Spring Budget last month to incentivise people to become childminders.

Akshata Murty, the daughter of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, is listed on the UK's Companies House register as a shareholder in Koru Kids one of six childminder agencies in England listed on the government's website with contact details.

The Opposition had flagged this fact last month and called for further explanations at a hearing of the Liaison Committee made up of all House of Commons committee chairs.

Labour MP Catherine McKinnell had asked Sunak if he had any interest to declare in relation to the new childcare policy.

"No, all my disclosures are declared in the normal way," he said at the time.

Now the parliamentary watchdog's investigation will decide if there has been any breach of the code, which can then be put before MPs sitting on the Committee on Standards which is responsible for deciding any sanctions.

'We are happy to assist the Commissioner to clarify how this has been transparently declared as a ministerial interest,' a Downing Street spokesperson said.   -- PTI

19:13   Guj AAP leader Italia arrested, granted bail over remarks against BJP leaders
Gujarat Aam Aadmi Party leader Gopal Italia was on Monday arrested in connection with a case registered in September last year for allegedly using defamatory words against state Bharatiya Janata Party leaders and was granted bail.

The case was lodged in Umra police station in Surat on September 2, 2022 for using allegedly defamatory words against state BJP chief C R Paatil and Gujarat minister Harsh Sanghavi and also calling BJP workers 'goons' in a video message uploaded on social media platforms.

Italia had uploaded the video messages after an alleged attack on his colleague Manoj Sorathiya in Surat on August, 2022.

In the video message, Italia had used some allegedly objectionable words to describe Paatil and Sangahvi and had said the attack on Sorathiya was carried out by BJP goons.

The case was being investigated by Surat Crime Branch, which arrested Italia during the day.

After being released on bail, Italia said the police action was aimed at harassing him.

"Such statements are made by all political leaders against one another. How come an FIR was lodged only against me? They (police and government) are misusing their power," he said.

The case was registered against Italia under Indian Penal Code sections 500 (defamation), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 505 (1)(b) (offending act inducing person to commit an offence against state or public tranquillity), and 469 (forgery for purpose of harming reputation) of the Indian Penal Code.   -- PTI

18:51   Protest in Ladakh against 'defaming' Dalai Lama
Leh and Kargil towns of the Ladakh Union territory observed a shutdown on Monday in protest against the "controversial video" of the Dalai Lama, which went viral of the social media, drawing criticism against the spiritual leader on social media.

The Dalai Lama had apologized to a boy, his family and friends for the "hurt his words may have caused", after a video clip purportedly showing the Tibetan spiritual head asking him to "suck" his tongue sparked a row.

In the two-minute-five-second video, the Dalai Lama also asked the child "to look at those good human beings who create peace, and happiness and not follow those who kill other people".

Led by the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA), the protesters also condemned the "conspiracy to defame" the Dalai Lama and extended support to him, requesting him to continue spreading peace, love, and compassion.

All the shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was off the roads in Leh and Kargil districts in protests against "defaming the Dalai Lama by making a video viral on social media and comments made by various celebrities hurting religious feelings of Buddhists".

Hundreds of people took out protest rallies in Leh and Kargil. They carried placards, religious flags amid pictures of spiritual leaders in protests against attempts to defame him. They raised slogans against those involved in it.

"Entire Leh and Kargil districts of Ladakh observed shutdown. The people came on streets to protest against the attempt to defame Dalai Lama Ji. We are hurt over it," a social leader S Samphel told reporters.

The statement issued by the office of Dalai Lama had said, "A video clip has been circulating that shows a recent meeting when a young boy asked His Holiness the Dalai Lama if he could give him a hug. His Holiness wishes to apologise to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused."

"His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras. He regrets the incident," it said.

18:25   CBI summons Abhishek Banerjee, he cites SC stay
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) hand-delivered a summons to Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee for questioning in connection with the teachers' recruitment scam case on Monday, allegedly over two hours after the Supreme Court had stayed a high court order for his interrogation.

An agency official said the notice was prepared on Sunday and delivered on Monday.

Terming the action of the agency 'contempt of court', Banerjee tweeted, 'SC stayed the Calcutta HC's order in the morning that granted permission to the central agencies to summon me. Yet, the SUMMON' was HAND-DELIVERED today at 1:45 pm Grave State of affairs!'

A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala, which decided to hear the plea on April 24, had stayed the direction of Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of the high court that TMC leader Banerjee and Kuntal Ghosh, an accused in the case, can be questioned by the ED and the CBI, and such 'interrogation should be made soon'.

The stay was granted at around 11.15 am.

'The petition was in the mentioning list. Dr A M Singhvi has adverted to the contents of the order and the directions passed by which the ED and CBI have been directed to file a report with respect to a probe in connection with a public speech by Abhishek Banerjee. List on April 24, 2023. Till the next date of listing, there shall be stay on all action against petitioner in relation to the directions passed in impugned order,' the apex court ordered.

The Calcutta high court on April 13 had passed a slew of directions, asking the police not to lodge FIRs on complaints against officers of the CBI or the ED who are investigating the educational recruitment scam of the West Bengal Central School Service Commission and the West Bengal Board of Primary Education without its permission.

It had asked the central agencies to probe the role of state TMC leaders in the case.

The apex court also stayed the order of Justice Gangopadhyay's April 13 order directing the West Bengal police not to lodge any FIR against CBI and Enforcement Directorate officers probing the school jobs-for-bribes scam.  -- PTI

17:44   Normalcy yet to resume in Atiq's native place
Normal activities are yet to resume in Kasari-Masari, the place where gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad's ancestral house is located, and the adjoining areas of Prayagraj on Monday, a day after Ahmad and his brother Ashraf were buried in their native place.

The sensitive places in Allahabad West assembly constituency, which was the stronghold of the former Lok Sabha MP, on Monday continued to witness heavy deployment of police personnel.

Kasari-Masari falls in the Allahabad West assembly constituency.

A few shops opened in areas adjoining Chakia-Rajrooppur, Kareli and Khuldabad. Police are conducting patrolling in the sensitive places in the area, sources said. People were reluctant to speak about the gunning down of Ahmad and Ashraf on Saturday night, even as internet services remained suspended in the city.

However, normalcy returned to other parts of the city, including in and around Civil Line bus depot and Hanuman Temple on Monday. Normal traffic was seen on the roads of the city with the office goers and school children rushing to their destinations.

The police sources said that the police may submit an application in the court in a day or two seeking remand of three assailants -- Lavlesh Tiwari (a resident of Banda), Mohit alias Sunny (Hamirpur) and Arun Maurya (Kasganj) -- who killed Ahmad and his brother Ashraf.

On Sunday, the three attackers were sent to 14-day judicial custody by a local court. They could also be questioned about how they got such modern weapons, and whether anyone had given them a contract to kill Ahmad and Ashraf, the sources said.

17:12   Infosys shares fall over 9% at end of day
Shares of Infosys on Monday tanked more than 9 per cent, wiping out Rs 59,349.66 crore from its market valuation, after the company reported a lower-than-expected growth in the fourth quarter net profit and gave a weak 4-7 per cent revenue growth guidance for FY24.

The stock tumbled 9.40 per cent to settle at Rs 1,258.10 on the BSE. During the day, it plunged 12.21 per cent to Rs 1,219 -- its 52-week low mark. On the NSE, it fell 9.37 per cent to finish at Rs 1,259. Infosys was the biggest drag on both the benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty.

The company's market valuation also declined by Rs 59,349.66 crore to Rs 5,21,930.34 crore. The 30-share BSE Sensex fell 520.25 points or 0.86 per cent to finish at 59,910.75, pulled down by Infosys and weak trends in other IT counters.

"The real damage was done by the frontline IT stocks with Infosys coming under severe hammering after its corporate earnings failed to meet street estimates. Besides disappointing results, worries of weak IT spending by multinational giants on gloomy economic conditions and recessionary fears have weighed heavily on the sector over the past few months," Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research (Retail) at Kotak Securities Ltd, said.

Other IT firms also faced heavy drubbing, with Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies, Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro falling in the range of 1-5.25 per cent. The IT index tanked 4.77 per cent to settle at 26,887.72.

16:06   Sunstroke deaths culpable homicide, says Cong
The Congress on Monday attacked the BJP-Shiv Sena government in Maharashtra over the loss of lives due to sunstroke at an award function in Navi Mumbai, and demanded that accountability be fixed in what it said was a case of "culpable homicide".

At least 12 people have died while two others are battling for life after suffering sunstroke at the Maharashtra Bhushan award event on Sunday. The deceased were nine women and three men.

Slamming the Maharashtra government at a press conference here, Congress spokesperson Kanhaiya Kumar said, "We express condolences to the affected families and demand that the government take responsibility for it and take action in the matter."

He said that when a contract of crores of rupees is given to organise an event why was there no arrangement of tent, shade, water and air conditioning for people.

"The government is only concerned with photo opportunities. Our Congress unit has already stated that this is a matter of culpable homicide," Kumar said.

15:46   Amit Shah should not speak like a goon: Mamata
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday slammed Home Minister Amit Shah for his "undemocratic" and "unconstitutional" remarks that the TMC government won't survive beyond 2025 if the BJP wins 35 seats in the next year's Lok Sabha polls.

She also called for his resignation over the comments he had made during a rally on April 14. "On Friday, Amit Shah addressed a rally. That is fine. But how can the Union home minister of the country talk about toppling a democratically elected government of a state? Is the constitution of the country being changed?

"He can never make such a comment that if BJP wins 35 Lok Sabha seats, the state government won't complete the full term," Banerjee told reporters.

The Mamata Banerjee government is scheduled to complete its third term in 2026. While addressing a public rally at Suri in Birbhum district, Shah set a target for the BJP to win 35 Lok Sabha seats from West Bengal and said the incumbent Mamata Banerjee government in the state won't survive beyond 2025 if the goal is achieved.

The TMC supremo claimed Shah's remarks prove that "a conspiracy is being hatched to dislodge the state government", and added that the home minister should not speak like a "goon". Referring to CBI's summons to her Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal, Banerjee said, "Are they trying to send out a message that a chief minister can be summoned and questioned? If a CM can be questioned, why can't the home minister be questioned too?" she said.

Banerjee claimed that the BJP won't return to power in the next parliamentary polls, reiterating the appeal to the opposition leaders to unite against the saffron party ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. PTI

After prominent Lingayat leader Jagadish Shettar defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party and joined the Congress ahead of the upcoming Karnataka assembly elections, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday said the former Karnataka chief minister would be used and later thrown out by Congress.

"Shettar has gone to the party that expelled Virendra Patil, Bangarappa and Devaraj Urs. They first honour people and then insult them after the election. 14:52   Bhatinda jawan killed soldiers over personal enmity
Punjab Police on Monday said that a preliminary investigation into the April 12 incident at the Bhatinda Military Station indicated that the gunner who shot dead four jawans in their sleep did so due to "personal enmity."

Addressing a press conference here, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Bathinda, Gulneet Khurana said that the Army gunner had on "sustained interrogation" confessed to stealing an INSAS rifle and to killing four of his colleagues.

"After sustained interrogation, we found that one weapon has been stolen and that was used to kill the jawans. Later, one individual from the Artillery unit was detained and during interrogation, he confessed to the police his involvement in stealing an INSAS rifle and killing four of his colleagues. Initial investigations indicate that this was due to personal enmity," said SSP Bathinda.

The police official said that further investigation will be conducted in the case after taking remand of the accused.

The SSP also said no other individual's involvement has been detected till now. The Indian Army in a statement today said that gunner Desai Mohan, from the Artillery unit, where the incident occurred has confessed to police to his involvement in stealing an INSAS rifle and killing four of his colleagues.

South Western Command Headquarters, Indian Army stated that initial investigations indicated that personal reasons or animosity could be reasons for the shooting.

As per his confession to police, the Army said that Mohan had stolen the weapon along with a filled magazine in the early morning hours of April 9 and hid it somewhere.

On April 12, at around 4.30 am while he was on sentry duty, he moved to the first floor and killed all four personnel while they were asleep. Mohan then threw the rifle into a sewage pit.

The weapon and additional ammunition have been recovered from the sewage pit, said the Army statement. In the initial FIR filed on April 12, the Army gunner had falsely stated that he had seen two people in civilian dress and wearing face masks carrying the INSAS rifle and axe coming out of the barracks and running towards the jungle on the morning of the shooting incident. This statement was an attempt by Desai Mohan to divert the attention of investigating agencies, the Army said. Mohan is currently in police custody and further details are being ascertained.

"There is no terror angle as speculated earlier in some media reports," said the statement by the South Western Command Headquarters of the Indian Army.

14:43   BJP, RSS attacking democracy: Rahul in Karnataka
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday accused the ruling BJP and RSS of attacking democracy and spreading hatred and violence in the country. He also appealed to the people to support the Congress and ensure that the party wins at least 150 seats in the May 10 Assembly polls in Karnataka, and comes to power with a full majority.

"Bidar is Basavanna's (12th century social reformer) 'karma bhoomi'. If someone first spoke about democracy and showed the path towards democracy it was Basavanna. It is sad that today across the country, people from RSS and BJP are attacking democracy," Gandhi said.

Addressing a public meeting in Karnataka, he alleged that the BJP and RSS are attacking Basavanna's ideals of equal partnership, equal opportunities, and that everyone should move ahead together.

"They are spreading hatred and violence in Hindustan, and they are taking away money from poor and weaker section people and giving it to two or three rich people," he added. 13:53   Atiq killing: Shooters moved to high-security cell
Three shooters who gunned down Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed on the night of April 15, have been shifted from the barracks to the high-security cell of Naini (Prayagraj) Central Jail on Monday.

"All three shooters, Arun Maurya, Sunny Singh and Lovelesh Tiwari, are under threat of attack behind bars, owing to which they have been shifted to a high-security cell," official sources said.

"The slain gangster Atiq Ahmed allegedly had a good network in the jail, and this prompted authorities to shift the trio to a high-security cell rather as they believed that keeping them with other prisoners could have been risky," sources pointed out.

Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf Ahmad were shot dead by men posing as press persons on Saturday night while being taken for a medical examination in Prayagraj. Both the gangsters collapsed on the spot after they were shot at nearly point-blank range.

The three shooters, Arun Maurya, Sunny Singh and Lovelesh Tiwari were sent to 14-day judicial custody by the district court on Sunday.

13:33   BJP falling like house of cards in K'taka: Cong
The Congress on Monday took a swipe at the BJP over former Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar crossing over to it ahead of the May 10 Assembly elections, claiming the ruling party is "falling like a house of cards".
Shettar joined the Congress in Bengaluru in the presence of AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, general secretaries K C Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala (Karnataka in-charge), KPCC president D K Shivakumar and Legislature Party leader and former chief minister Siddaramaiah, among others.
In a tweet on his joining, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, "A massive shift in Karnataka politics! Former CM and a widely respected leader across the state, Jagadish Shettar, has joined the Congress party today."
"@INCKarnataka is on track to form the government with a full majority. BJP is falling like a house of cards," Ramesh said.
Shettar on Sunday had resigned as the Hubli-Dharwad (Central) MLA after the BJP denied him the ticket to contest the Assembly polls.
The 67-year old six-time MLA, Shettar was asked by the BJP top brass to make way for others, but he on his part had asserted that he wanted to contest one last time.
After joining the Congress, Shettar alleged that he had been humiliated by the BJP by denying him a ticket and that the party is today in the control of "very few people." -- PTI

12:58   2nd Muslim ex-MP murdered with impunity: Owaisi
After gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed was killed in Prayagraj, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that Atiq was the second former MP from the Muslim community to be "murdered without impunity".

"Atiq is the second Muslim ex-MP who was murdered with impunity. Ehsan Jaffry was ruthlessly hacked to death by a mob in Gujarat in 2002 and today it's Atiq. Shot and killed in police custody," tweeted Owaisi.

Atiq Ahmed represented the Phulpur Lok Sabha constituency between 2004-2009. Ehsan Jaffry was a member of the 6th Lok Sabha.

He was killed by a mob in the Gulbarg Society massacre on February 28, 2002, following the Godhra incident. After Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were shot dead in Prayagraj, AIMIM chief Owaisi called the incident a "cold-blooded murder" while adding that people who are celebrating this killing are "vultures".

Addressing the mediapersons on Sunday, Owaisi said, "Uttar Pradesh's BJP government has a role in this. Supreme Court-monitored investigation should be done and a committee should be formed. No officer from Uttar Pradesh should be included in the committee. This was a 'cold-blooded' murder."

He further said, "How did they (killers) get those weapons?... Why were they raising religious slogans after killing them? What will you call them if not terrorists? Will you call them Patriots? People celebrating this incident are vultures..."

He said the incident raises a big question about the law and order situation. The AIMIM chief questioned whether the public will have any faith in the constitution and Law and order of the country after this incident. "I have always been saying that BJP in Uttar Pradesh is not running the government by the rule of law but by the rule of gun," he said. Owaisi further demanded Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's resignation.

The Indian national who died of bullet injuries in the violence-hit Sudanese capital city of Khartoum two days ago was all set to come here for a few days in May when the tragedy struck.

Albert Augestine, a retired soldier, had called his wife and daughter to Sudan a couple of weeks ago to celebrate Easter with them and had booked tickets to travel back with them on May 3.

However, on Saturday, April 15, a stray bullet hit him while he was standing near the window of his flat talking to his son in the UK, the victim's father told the media here.

Albert's wife and daughter, who were with him at the time, escaped unhurt and moved into a bunker under the flat. They were later shifted to a safe place and provided food, according to information received from the Indian Embassy in Sudan and the company Albert worked for, his father said.

The body could be shifted to a local hospital in the Sudanese capital city of Khartoum only after more than 24 hours due to the ongoing military conflict in the region.

On Sunday, Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan had said that Albert's family will be provided all necessary help and added that steps are on to bring his body back to the country. 11:41   Politics prevailed not people: Raut on Maha deaths
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Monday blamed the Maharashtra government for the death of 11 people due to sunstroke after attending an award function and claimed politics prevailed over the convenience of people.

The 'Maharashtra Bhushan' award event in Navi Mumbai on Sunday turned deadly with the death of at least 11 people due to sunstroke as the function, attended by lakhs, was held in an open ground in Kharghar area of Raigad district neighbouring Mumbai.

The function was attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah who conferred the award on spiritual leader and social reformer Appasaheb Dharmadhikari.

Speaking to reporters, Raut said, "The Maharashtra Bhushan award function could have been held in the evening, but Union minister Amit Shah had no free time. Thus, the programme was held during the day time and people got exposed to the scorching heat and sunlight.

"Politics behind the award prevailed over people's convenience," the Rajya Sabha member said.

He said every state government has its own experts and advisers who could have informed the officials about not holding such a large gathering during the day time.

There should have been some wisdom applied on how long the programme should be stretched, he said.

"The programme got stretched too long and people fell sick. A few of them even died because of it. The people who attended the event had come for Appasaheb Dharmadhikari and not for any other politician present on the stage," Raut said.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson further said there have been similar incidents in the past and the state should have learnt some lessons from them before organising such events. The Maharashtra Bhushan is the state's highest civilian award given to people from different walks of life to recognise their contribution towards the welfare of society.

11:21   Same-sex marriage is 'urban-elitist' view: Centre
Terming the petitions seeking legal validation of same-sex marriage as one which reflect an "urban elitist" view, the Centre has told the Supreme Court that recognition of marriage is essentially a legislative function which the courts should refrain from deciding.

Questioning the maintainability of the petitions, the Centre said what is presented before this court is a mere urban elitist view for the purpose of social acceptance.

"The competent legislature will have to take into account broader views and voice of all rural, semi-rural and urban population, views of religious denominations keeping in mind personal laws as well as and customs governing the field of marriage together with its inevitable cascading effects on several other statutes," the Centre said.

The submissions were made in an affidavit filed in response to a batch of pleas seeking legal validation of same-sex marriage. The affidavit stated that marriage is a socio-legal institution which can be created, recognised, conferred with legal sanctity and regulated only by the competent legislature by way of an Act under Article 246 of the Constitution of India.

"It is submitted that therefore, it is the humble request of the applicant the issues raised in the present petition be left to the wisdom of the elected representatives of the people who alone shall be the democratically viable and legitimate source through which any change in the understanding and/or the creation/recognition of the any new social institution can take place," the Centre said.

A five-judge Supreme Court constitution bench is scheduled to hear from Tuesday a batch of petitions seeking legal validation of same-sex marriage in the country.

A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justices S K Kaul, S Ravindra Bhat, P S Narasimha and Hima Kohli will commence the hearing on April 18 on the petitions which were referred to a larger bench for an authoritative pronouncement on March 13 by the CJI-led bench, saying it is very seminal issue .

On Sunday, at least 11 people died due to sunstroke as the function, attended by lakhs, was held in an open ground in Kharghar area of Raigad district. Forty-four people were admitted to five hospitals in and around Kharghar. Out of them, 20 are still undergoing treatment while the others have been discharged, according to the Raigad district information officer.

The Kharghar police have registered accidental death reports (ADR) in connection with the 11 fatalities, an official said. The deceased included eight women. Ten bodies were handed over to their relatives, according to officials.

Lakhs of people had come for the event held on a 306-acre ground in Kharghar.

The nearest weather station to the spot had recorded a maximum temperature of 38 degrees Celsius. Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly Ajit Pawar visited the MGM Hospital at Kamothe in Navi Mumbai late Sunday night and enquired about the health of the people undergoing treatment there after suffering from sunstroke.

Talking to reporters, he termed the incident as "most unfortunate" and said the priority was to ensure the patients get well soon. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader claimed it was a function of the Maharashtra government. "It is a well known fact that during April-May, the temperature is very high. During these days, the temperature is around 40 degrees Celsius," he said.

"Hence, it needs to be probed as to who had fixed the noon timing for the award function," the NCP leader said.

Pawar said the function could have been held in the evening and Union Home Minister Amit Shah could have taken a chopper to reach the venue. Shah on Sunday conferred the Maharashtra Bhushan Award on spiritual leader and social reformer Appasaheb Dharmadhikari at the event.

The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) in a release on Sunday night said, "At least 11 deaths apparently due to sunstroke have been confirmed." Panvel Municipal Commissioner Ganesh Deshmukh said there was no report of any new fatality so far. "Twenty four people were discharged from hospitals after treatment on Sunday," he said.

A police official said the highest number of 15 sunstroke patients were admitted to the MGM hospital. The patients in other hospitals in Navi Mumbai were also recuperating and they were stated to be in stable condition, he added.

Shinde had on Sunday told reporters outside a hospital in Navi Mumbai that at least 50 people were admitted there out of which 24 are still hospitalised while the rest have been discharged after primary treatment. He termed the deaths "very unfortunate". The CM said the kin of the deceased will be given a compensation of Rs 5 lakh.

Many of the followers of Shree Parivar (Dharmadhikari's organisation) had reached the venue on Friday and stayed there till the function concluded at around 1.30 pm on Sunday. Some people complained of dizziness and other complications on Sunday. Some also fainted at the function ground.  "Due to the sudden deterioration of SP leader Muhammad Azam Khan's health, he has been admitted to Sir Gangaram Hospital in Delhi at around 3 am on Monday," hospital authorities said. More details are awaited.

The case was registered against Khan in April 2019 for levelling serious allegations against administrative officials posted in Rampur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during an election meeting.

During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Khan was booked for making inflammatory speeches while addressing a public meeting in Khatanagaria village of the Milak Kotwali area. 08:23   Plea in SC for independent panel probe into killings of Atiq
A day after gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf were shot dead under police escort, a plea was filed in the Supreme Court on Sunday seeking the constitution of an independent expert committee headed by a former apex court judge to probe the killings.
The plea, filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, also sought an inquiry into the 183 encounters that have taken place in Uttar Pradesh since 2017.
Ahmad (60) and Ashraf, who were in handcuffs, were shot dead by three men posing as journalists when they were answering reporters' queries while being escorted by police personnel to a medical college in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj for a checkup on Saturday night.
Just hours before the shooting, the last rites of Ahmad's son Asad, who along with one of his associates was gunned down in a police encounter in Jhansi on April 13, were held.
Uttar Pradesh Police had said on Friday that it has gunned down 183 alleged criminals in encounters in the six years of the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led government and this included Asad and his accomplice.
The plea sought the creation of an independent expert committee to probe the killings of Atiq and Ashraf.
"Issue guidelines/directions to safeguard the rule of law by constituting an Independent Expert Committee under the Chairmanship of former Supreme Court justice to inquire into the 183 encounters which had occurred since 2017 as stated by Uttar Pradesh Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) and also to inquire into the police custody murder of Atiq and Ashraf," it said.
Referring to Atiq's killing, the plea said "such actions by police are a severe threat to democracy and rule of law and lead to police state".
"In a democratic society the police cannot be allowed to become a mode of delivering final justice or to become a punishing authority. The power of punishment is only vested in the judiciary," the plea stated.
The plea said extra judicial killings or fake police encounters have no place under the law.
When the police turn "Dare Devils then the entire rule of law collapses and generates fear in the mind of people against police which is very dangerous for democracy and this also results into further crime," it stated. -- PTI
