Jailed gangster Abu Salem was on Tuesday sentenced to three years imprisonment in a 25-year-old fake passport case by an Uttar Pradesh court.

Special judicial magistrate Samriddhi Mishra convicted Salem, who appeared through video conferencing from Taloja jail, New Mumbai, where he has been serving life imprisonment for his role in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, and his associate Mohammad Parvez Alam in the passport case.

While pronouncing the quantum of sentence, the court said that the time already spent by them in jail in this case shall be adjusted in their three-year jail term.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Salem and Rs 35,000 on Alam.

Alam, who was present before the court, was granted interim bail on furnishing two sureties of Rs 20,000 each. He had sought bail, saying he wanted to challenge the verdict before the sessions court.

According to the prosecution, after the 1993 Mumbai blast, it was revealed that Abu Salem in conspiracy with his wife Sameera Jumani and Azamgarh resident Mohammed Parvez Alam had got a fake passport prepared from Lucknow in the name of Aqil Ahmad Azmi and Sameera Jubani. They had concealed their identity.

The first information report in this connection was lodged by CBI's Special Task Force, New Delhi, on October 16, 1997 against Abu Salem and others.

They were also accused of preparing fake documents with the signature of then SSP Azamgarh on June 29, 1993.

Salem was extradited from Portugal on November 11, 2005, after a prolonged legal battle. In June 2017, Salem was convicted and awarded a life sentence for his role in the 1993 serial blast case in Mumbai.
