The high court of Karnataka on Monday stayed the proceedings in the case filed against Kunigal MLA Dr H D Ranganath for allegedly breaking COVID-19 rules.

The Kunigal police had initiated proceedings against Ranganath and 12 others for breaking the standard operating procedures in place on June 19, 2021, and assembling before the police station.

Ranganath, a medical practitioner, in his petition before the high court, submitted that he had gone to the station to disperse over 200 people who had gathered there to protest against the alleged police inaction in an accident case in which a person had died.

The orthopaedic surgeon and others were booked under the Karnataka Epidemic Diseases Act 2020.

The court stayed further proceedings in the case and issued notices to the respondents. -- PTI
