BJP's Parag Alawani, polling agent for party leader Piyush Goyal, on the Rajya Sabha poll:

"BJP has raised objections on three votes of MVA -- Yashomati Thakur of INC, Jitendra Awhad of NCP and Suhas Kande of Shiv Sena. BJP has requested the Returning Officer to hold their votes invalid.

"Objection was raised because two MLAs gave their ballot papers to the polling agents of their parties which is a violation of rules. They can only show their ballots to their agents and not handover them to anyone."

In Maharashtra, seven candidates are in the fray for six seats in what is the first time in more than two decades that there is an electoral contest for the Rajya Sabha polls.

A close contest is being played out between the state's ruling Shiv Sena and the opposition BJP for the sixth seat. The contest is primarily between BJP's Dhananjay Mahadik and the Sena's Sanjay Pawar.

The ruling MVA - Shiv Sena, NCP, Congress - had kept their MLAs in different hotels and resorts in Mumbai till they left for the state assembly just before polling began.

The Assembly is the electoral college for the biennial elections.

In Maharashtra, the total votes have come down from 288 to 285 -- there is a vacancy due to the death of Shiv Sena MLA Ramesh Latke and the courts rejected pleas by minister Nawab Malik and former minister Anil Deshmukh seeking a day's bail to cast their vote.
