After selecting Droupadi Murmu as NDA's presidential candidate, the Bharatiya Janata Party is all set to announce the candidates for the August 6 vice-presidential election on Friday.

There is speculation that the BJP would pick Karnataka governor Thawar Chand Gehlot as its VP nominee.

Gehlot is a prominent Dalit leader who has served the BJP in various capacities including as a member of the BJP's Parliamentary Board and the Central Election Committee.

Gehlot was also minister of social justice and empowerment in the first term of the Modi government.

The term of incumbent M Venkaiah Naidu ends on August 10 and the next vice president will take oath on August 11.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance has a clear edge in the election, in which the members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, including the nominated ones, are eligible to vote.
The vice president is also the chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.
