The National Commission for Scheduled Castes has demanded that AAP MLA Naresh Balyan should be booked for allegedly engaging people in the banned practice of manual scavenging.

The Aam Aadmi Party leader and Uttam Nagar MLA had recently shared four pictures of drain and sewage cleaning as part of monsoon preparedness on Twitter.

India on Saturday slammed the US Commission on International Religious Freedom for its 'biased' and 'inaccurate' comments on the country.

The strong reaction from the ministry of external affairs came a day after the USCIRF alleged 'repression' of critical voices, especially religious minorities and those reporting on and advocating for them in India.

The Mumbai police have increased deployment at Aarey forest in light of the protest called by environmentalists against the state government's decision to build a metro car shed at the site, an official said on Saturday.

The city police have increased police deployment at the forest to avoid any untoward incident during the protest, the official said.

12:42   Amravati chemist killed for backing Nupur Sharma
A 54-year-old chemist was stabbed to death in Amravati city of Maharashtra, with the police suspecting that the accused committed the offence as the victim had allegedly shared a post on a social messaging platform in support of Nupur Sharma, whose remarks on Prophet Mohammed led to nationwide protests and global condemnation.

The chemist, Umesh Prahladrao Kolhe, was killed on June 21, and five persons have been arrested so far in this connection, an official said.

The incident occurred a week before two men hacked to death Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor in Rajasthan's Udaipur, with a cleaver at his shop before posting videos online saying that they were avenging an insult to Islam.

"Five persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of the chemist and a search is on to trace the prime accused Irfan Khan (32), who runs a NGO," Amravati commissioner of police Dr Aarti Singh said on Saturday.

"Kolhe ran a medical store in Amravati city. He had allegedly shared a post on some WhatsApp groups in support of Nupur Sharma for her comments.

He even mistakenly shared the post in a WhatsApp group in which some Muslims were also members, including his customers," an official of the City Kotwali police station said.

After that, Irfan Khan hatched a conspiracy to eliminate Kolhe and roped in five persons for it. He promised to give Rs 10,000 to them and a safe escape in a car, he said.

The incident occurred between 10 pm and 10.30 pm on June 21, when Kolhe was going home on a two-wheeler after closing his shop, he said, adding that his son Sanket (27) and wife Vaishnavi were accompanying him in a different vehicle.

"When all of them reached near Mahila College's gate, two motorcycle-borne men came from behind and blocked Kolhe's path. A youth alighted from the motorcycle and stabbed Kolhe on his neck with a sharp weapon and escaped from the spot. Kolhe collapsed on the road in a pool of blood. Sanket rushed him to a hospital, where he died," the official said.

Based on Saket's complaint, an FIR was registered and five persons, identified as Muddsir Ahemad (22), Shahrukh Pathan (25), Abdul Thoufique (24) Shoaib Khan (22) and Atib Rashid (22), all residents of Amravati and daily wage workers, have been arrested.

The police have seized the knife used in the crime and obtained the CCTV footages that captured the sequence of events.

Police commissioner Singh said the exact reason behind the murder is being ascertained.

The BJP had on June 5 suspended its national spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled Delhi BJP media head Jindal after their alleged derogatory remarks against the Prophet led to an outrage in India and Gulf countries.

After the police application, Zubair moved a bail plea before the court on the ground that he was not required for the investigation any further.

The court is likely to hear the bail application shortly.

Zubair's advocate Vrinda Grover told the court that the phone seized by the police was not of the time the tweets were made.

'Tweet is of 2018, the phone is which I (Zubair) am using presently. I haven't even denied the tweet,' she said.

Zubair was earlier booked under sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class) of the IPC.

IPC section 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) was also invoked against him later.

08:56   Raj Thackeray praises Fadnavis, 'alerts' Shinde
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray has extended his best wishes to BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis for being sworn in as the deputy chief minister of the state, further praising him for accepting the junior slot in the government following the order of the party high command despite him being a two-time chief minister.

Notably, Fadnavis had initially denied being a part of the new government and had said that he would support the government from outside.

However, on the word of the party high command, he accepted to join the government as a deputy.

Thackeray denied calling it a 'demotion' of Fadnavis stating that it has been done to with an aim to meet a target.

Taking to Twitter, the MNS chief wrote, 'I won't say anything about you being appointed the deputy chief minister as a promotion or demotion, I would only say this that when a target is to be aimed, the rope of the bow is pulled back with the arrow to hit the target. And this is not considered a demotion.'

Thackeray also extended best wishes to Eknath Shinde for being sworn in as the chief minister and also cautioned him asking him to 'take measured steps'.

'My heartfelt congratulations to you on being sworn in as the chief minister of Maharashtra. It is indeed a moment of happiness for us. Providence has given you this opportunity. I hope you will prove it with your confidence. Be alert. Take measured steps,' he tweeted.

He also had taken a veiled jibe at Uddhav Thackeray during the Maharashtra crisis saying that 'when anyone misunderstands good fortune as one's personal accomplishment, therein begins the journey of one's decline'.

Though Raj Thackeray has not named Uddhav, however, the timing of the tweet gave an indication of the reference to his brother.   -- ANI

08:41   21 killed as Russian missiles hit Odeassa
At least 21 people were killed and dozens injured when the Russian missile on Friday struck a residential tower and a recreational centre in the southern Ukrainian region of Odessa.

One of the missiles hit the nine-storey residential tower in Serhiivka, killing at least 16 and injuring 38 people, according to The New York Times citing Ukraine's state emergency service.

And then another missile hit a recreational centre, where five people died and one was injured, emergency officials said on Telegram.

The residential tower, which is home to 100 people, has been destroyed on one side, according to the Ukrainian regional military administration.

They were still going through the rubble of the recreational centre, officials said. The missiles struck around 1 am.

The Kremlin's spokesman, Dmitri S. Peskov, again denied on Friday that Russia was targeting any civilian infrastructure.

"I would like to again remind you of the words of the president of the Russian Federation and commander in chief that the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are not working against civilian targets in the course of the special military operation," Peskov said as quoted by The New York Times.

He further said that Russia's target included ammunition and arms depots, plants that manufacture and repair military equipment, and places where 'foreign mercenaries' and 'nationalist elements' are based and trained.

The attack came as Russian troops withdrew from Snake Island after occupying the strategic Black Sea outpost for months.

Snake Island, a tiny piece of land about 25 miles off Ukraine's southeastern coast, sits on a major shipping lane and is an important access point to the key port of Odessa.

As per the report by The Washington Post, 'the Ukrainian artillery, rockets and airstrikes this month pushed the Russians out of the Snake Island', wrote Commander in chief of the Ukrainian armed forces, Valery Zaluzhny in a Facebook post.

He also shared a video of missiles hitting the island and claimed a week earlier it had taken out Russian anti-aircraft systems there.

However, Russia denied its systems had been destroyed

'Russian forces tried unsuccessfully to stymie the assault with nighttime fighter jet attacks on the coast of the Odessa region,' the Ukrainian military's southern command said on Facebook.

As the Ukrainian military operation continued, Russian troops remaining on the island 'hurriedly evacuated' the garrison on two speedboats, the statement added.

Taking to Telegram, Andriy Yermak, the head of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's office said, "On Snake [Island] there are no more Russians," stating further that the Ukrainian Armed Forces conducted a wonderful operation and knocked them out, the report said.

He also thanked foreign allies for weapons that aided the fight.   -- ANI

00:51   Metro 3 shed on land proposed by SC: Fadnavis
Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said that Mumbai metro line 3 cannot be started until the car shed is prepared and land proposed by the previous MVA government for the purpose is disputed.

"Mumbai metro line 3 cannot be started until the car shed is prepared. Land proposed by the previous government for the car shed is disputed. During our government, 25 per cent of work has been completed on the land proposed by SC and the remaining 75 per cent work can be done immediately," he told the media.

"For the benefit of Mumbaikars, the car shed should only be made on that land proposed by SC in order to start the metro service," he added.

Within hours of assuming office, the new Maharashtra government with Eknath Shinde as Chief Minister and Devendra Fadnavis as the deputy Chief Minister directed the advocate general that its view that the metro car shed be built in Mumbai's Aarey colony itself should be placed before the court. -- ANI
