Loco equipment failure cause of Bika-Guwa accident

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw who is at the site of the Bikaner-Guwahati Express train accident in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district said it the mishap occurred due to equipment failure.

"Preliminary inquiry shows there was a glitch in locomotive equipment. The Commission of Rail Safety is conducting an inquiry to find the root cause behind the accident," the minister said.

The death toll has gone up to nine.

Three of the deceased are yet to be identified, she added.

Twelve coaches of the Bikaner-Guwahati Express train had derailed and some of them capsized near Domohani in Jalpaiguri district on Thursday.

The disbursement of ex gratia amount to the families of the victims has begun. Family of each deceased will get Rs 5 lakhs, those who sustained grievous injuries will get Rs 1 lakh, & those with nonserious injuries will get Rs 25,000, the minister said.
