The Russian military has attacked Ukraine from neighbouring Belarus, Ukraine's border guard agency said today.

Russian troops launched their anticipated attack on Ukraine on Thursday, as President Vladimir Putin cast aside international condemnation and sanctions, warning other countries that any attempt to interfere would lead to consequences 'you have never seen'.

Russian troops unleashed an artillery barrage as part of an attack backed by Belarus. Ukrainian border guards fired back, and for now, there was no immediate report of casualties.

Belarus is an ally of Russia and it has been conducting its military drills from the nation.

The Ukrainian capital of Kyiv is about 75 km south of the border with Belarus.
