23:55   US scribe Angad Singh deported from Delhi airport to New York: Family
American journalist Angad Singh was deported to New York soon after he landed in New Delhi on Wednesday night, his mother claimed in a Facebook post.

Singh, who produces documentaries for Vice News with a focus on Asia, was on a personal visit to India, his mother Gurmeet Kaur said.

"My son, an American citizen who travelled 18 hours to Delhi to visit us in Punjab, was deported. Put in the next flight back to New York," Kaur said.

"They did not give a reason. But we know it is his award winning journalism that scares them. It is the stories he did and the stories he is capable of. It is the love for his Motherland that they can't stand. It is the cutting edge reporting of Vice News that gets to them," Kaur claimed.

Singh has produced a series of documentaries on the COVID-19 pandemic in India as also on the farmers' protests on the borders of the national capital against the now-repealed three farm laws.

Singh's coverage of the deadly Delta wave of the pandemic last year had earned him an Emmy nomination.

23:41   Ukraine's Zaporizhzhya nuclear plant disconnected from power grid: Report
Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was completely disconnected from the power grid for the first time in its history on Thursday, according to the country's nuclear operator.

The nuclear power plant is held by Russian forces.

In a statement cited by CNN, Energoatom said that the complex was disconnected on Thursday due to fires at a nearby ash pit, causing the last remaining power line connecting to Ukraine's energy grid to disconnect twice.

"The actions of the invaders caused a complete disconnection of the ZNPP (Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant) from the power grid -- the first in the history of the plant," it stated.

Later on Thursday, the Russian-installed regional governor said that "at the moment, the power supply to all cities and districts of the Zaporizhzhia region has been restored" from the plant after earlier disruptions.

Yevhen Balytskyi, an official, blamed Ukrainian military action for the earlier outages.

"As a result of a strike by the armed formations of Ukraine on power lines in the area of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, the territory of the security zone of the 750 kV overhead line caught fire. The fire was provoked by a short circuit on power lines," he said, as per CNN.

21:10   Adanis move HC for police protection in port stir
The Adani Ports, which is building the transshipment port in Vizhinjam in Thiruvananthapuram, on Thursday filed a petition in the Kerala high court seeking police protection from those protesting against the construction work.

The Adani Group, in its plea stated that the ongoing agitation by fishermen was a threat to the life of its employees and the government was not taking any action in this regard despite representations made.

It prayed for a court direction to the state government to provide adequate police security to the project.

A large number of fisherfolks have been protesting outside the main entrance of the multi-purpose seaport, located at nearby Mulloor, since last week pressing their seven-point charter of demands including halting the construction work and to conduct a coastal impact study in connection with the multi-crore project.

The protesters have been alleging that the unscientific construction of groynes, the artificial sea walls known as pulimutt in local parlance, as part of the upcoming Vizhinjam port was one of the reasons for the increasing coastal erosion in the district.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had recently said that his government was considering providing rented accommodation to rehabilitate the displaced fisherfolk and the district collector of Thiruvananthapuram has been entrusted with the task which includes fixation of rent. -- PTI

The Prime Minister's Office, in a statement, said Modi will address 'Khadi Utsav' at the Sabarmati riverfront in Ahmedabad on Saturday and address a programme on Sunday in Gandhinagar, commemorating 40 years of Suzuki in India.

The memorial carries names of the people who had lost their lives during the earthquake.

Billed as the story of a watershed moment in the political history of India, Emergency is written and directed by Ranaut.

16:59   Cong presidential poll likely to be deferred
The election for the Congress president is likely to be postponed for a few weeks and the final schedule will be decided in the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting scheduled on August 28, party sources said on Thursday.

Earlier it was announced that the election schedule will be from August 21 to September 20.

16:35   Kejriwal questions source of Rs 800 crore 'offered' by BJP to 40 AAP MLAs
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday questioned the source of the Rs 800 crore allegedly offered by the Bharatiya Janata Party to 40 Aam Aadmi Party MLAs for switching sides and asserted that his government is stable.

After a meeting of the AAP legislators at his residence, Kejriwal, along with his MLAs, went to Rajghat to pray for the failure of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) 'Operation Lotus'.

'They (BJP) offered Rs 20 crore each to our MLAs. They have kept Rs 800 crore for toppling the Delhi government. But the citizens of the country want to know about the source of this money. Is it from GST or the PM CARES Fund? Have some of their friends given them this money?' he asked.

The chief minister said his deputy Manish Sisodia, who is being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for alleged corruption in the Excise Policy 2021-22, has been named in a 'false FIR'.

"Even mattresses and walls at Sisodia's residence were searched by the CBI but not even a single unaccounted penny was found. No objectionable documents or jewellery were found. We were thinking why was this happening with us since they also know that Sisodia is an extremely honest man and a patriot who has worked on education in the national capital," he said.

Reiterating Sisodia's claims, Kejriwal said a day after the CBI's raids, the deputy chief minister was approached by the BJP with an offer of the chief minister's post.

"The next day after the raids, they sent a message to Sisodia that you leave Kejriwal, get some MLAs and come to us. We will topple the Delhi government and close the CBI, ED cases against you. I think I would have done some good deeds in my past life that I have got a companion like Sisodia. They were offering him the chief minister's post but he refused. He rejected their offer," the AAP national convenor said.

He further alleged that the BJP is 'offering Rs 20 crore each' to AAP MLAs with a design 'to topple the Delhi government'.

"I am extremely happy that no MLA has yielded under pressure. They want to poach 40 MLAs but I want to tell the people of Delhi that they have voted for a hardcore honest government. Neither me nor my MLAs and ministers will betray the country and be sold out," Kejriwal said.

The BJP has been attacking the AAP for 'trying to deflect the focus' from the alleged corruption in the implementation of the 2021-22 Excise Policy and has asked the Kejriwal-led party to name the leaders of the saffron party who have approached its MLAs.

"Sometimes they say there is a scam of Rs 1.5 lakh crore, which is not even the budget of the Delhi government. Someone was saying there is a scam of Rs 8,000 crore. But what is this scam? Two leaders did a media briefing and said there has been a scam of Rs 1,100 crore. The LG's report said there is a scam of Rs 144 crore. The CBI FIR says there is a scam of Rs 1 crore. What is this scam? Is there anything? This is all rubbish," Kejriwal said.

He said the AAP MLAs prayed at Rajghat for peace to prevail in the country where the situation currently revolves around 'attempts to topple state governments'.

"This situation where they are toppling governments is not good. Why are they fighting with us? We meditated and prayed that the situation in the country improves. We prayed for the nation's progress and peace at Rajghat," Kejriwal said.

Earlier in the day, the AAP alleged that 40 of its Delhi MLAs were targeted by the BJP with an offer of Rs 20 crore each to switch sides, even as all the 62 of its legislators were accounted for during a meeting at Kejriwal's residence.   -- PTI

The son of veteran Congress leader M Mallikarjun Kharge said most of the partymen are insisting that either Rahul Gandhi or Priyanka Gandhi Vadra should take up the mantle as they have broader acceptance within the cadre and among the masses.

"They have pan-India appeal whether you like it or not," Kharge told PTI in Bengaluru.

"If you go through our recent history, it's impossible to function without a Gandhi at the helm of affairs of the Congress because they have been the 'glue factor'.

"It's not that we cannot function without the Gandhi family but they are the glue factor that binds us all. The family has sacrificed the most for the party", the former Karnataka minister said.

In case the two are unwilling to take up the post, then it should be left to the discretion and decision of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi himself on who should be the party president, according to him.

"Let them (Sonia and Rahul Gandhi) choose. Anybody who comes with their (the family's) endorsement will have the best interests of the party," he said.

On Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, seen to be emerging as the front-runner for the post, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson noted that he is known as 'Jaadoogar' (magician).

Considering Gehlot's experience and appeal, and his rapport with leaders of various States, he is a good choice if the party wants him to head it, he said.

But Kharge hastened to note that there are other names also being talked about, like Mukul Wasnik and Ghulam Nabi Azad.

All those leaders being suggested for the post come with immense experience and loyalty to the party, he pointed out.

Gehlot on Wednesday sought to play down reports about him being the front-runner to become Congress president and said efforts will be made till the last moment to persuade Rahul Gandhi to take over the reins of the party again.

Gehlot's remarks came a day after he met Congress chief Sonia Gandhi which triggered the buzz that the two may have discussed the possibility of him being the next party president.

The Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party's highest decision-making body, will hold a virtual meeting on Sunday to approve the schedule of dates for the election of the Congress president.

Sonia Gandhi will preside over the CWC meeting.

Several leaders, including Gehlot, have been publicly exhorting Rahul Gandhi to become party chief again. However, uncertainty and suspense continue on the issue.

Several party insiders say Rahul Gandhi is persisting with his stance that he will not be AICC president.

He resigned as Congress president after the party suffered its second consecutive defeat in parliamentary elections in 2019.

Sonia Gandhi, who took over the reins of the party again as interim president, had also offered to quit in August 2020 after an open revolt by a section of leaders, referred to as G-23, but the CWC had urged her to continue.   -- PTI

15:03   BJP to 'purify' Raj Ghat after AAP MLAs' visit
The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday claimed that the Aam Aadmi Party leaders' visit to Raj Ghat was part of their theatrics to divert people's attention from the controversy surrounding the liquor policy and said its workers will sprinkle 'Ganga Jal' on Mahatma Gandhi's memorial to 'purify' it.

Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said his party has been consistently asking the AAP to come clean on its excise policy, but the Arvind Kejriwal-led dispensation has been trying every possible trick in the book to divert people's attention elsewhere.

"The fact that they (AAP leaders) have gone to the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi means they have definitely committed an act which is to be considered a sin. So, in order to purify it, the BJP workers will sprinkle Ganga Jal on the Samadhi," Trivedi said.

"The BJP is asking pointed questions. However, the AAP is beating around the bush and evading the questions," he added.

After a meeting of the AAP legislators at his residence earlier in the day, Kejriwal, along with his MLAs, went to Raj Ghat to pray for the failure of the BJP's 'Operation Lotus'.

He said people have elected a 'hardcore honest' government in Delhi, which will not betray them.

Previously, the AAP had alleged that 40 of its Delhi MLAs were targeted by the BJP with an offer of Rs 20 crore each to switch sides, even as all the 62 of its legislators were accounted for.   -- PTI

14:19   INS Vikrant to be commissioned on September 3
The commissioning of the indigenously-built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant will contribute in ensuring peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, Vice Chief of Indian Navy Vice Admiral S N Ghormade said on Thursday.

INS Vikrant will be commissioned into the Navy at an event in Kochi on September which will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said.

Vice Admiral Ghormade said the commissioning of the aircraft carrier will be an 'unforgettable' day as it will significantly enhance the country's overall maritime capabilities.

Asked whether the Indian Navy is pushing for construction of a second aircraft carrier, he said deliberations are on over it.

On INS Vikrant, he said its commissioning will be a historic occasion and that it is also a symbol of 'national unity' as its components came from a significant number of states and Union Territories.

The aircraft carrier, built at a cost of around Rs 20,000 crore, successfully completed the fourth and final phase of the sea trials last month.

With the construction of Vikrant, India has joined a select group of nations having the niche capability to indigenously design and build an aircraft carrier.

The ship has over 2,300 compartments, designed for a crew of around 1,700 people, including specialised cabins to accommodate women officers.

Vikrant has a top speed of around 28 knots and a cruising speed of 18 knots with an endurance of about 7,500 nautical miles.

The aircraft carrier is 262 metres long, 62 metres wide and it has a height of 59 metres. Its construction began in 2009.

The Navy said the ship is powered by four gas turbines totalling 88 MW power and has a maximum speed of 28 Knots.

The project has been implemented under the three phases of contract between the ministry of defence and Cochin Shipyard Ltd, beginning May 2007.

The ship's keel was laid in February 2009.

The Navy said the aircraft carrier would be commissioned into the force on September 2 and it would bolster India's position in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and its quest for a blue water Navy.   -- PTI

14:02   Prophet row: Security stepped up at Charminar
Amid the ongoing turbulence in Telangana following protests against suspended Bharatiya Janata Party leader T Raja Singh for his alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad, the security near the Charminar was strengthened on Thursday.

This came in the wake of a massive protest in Hyderabad on August 23.

Earlier, a large crowd of protesters gathered at Shalibanda in Hyderabad over the alleged remarks of the suspended BJP leader.

The police took the situation under control after a lathi-charge.

The sequence of events started with T Raja Singh releasing a 10-minute video making derogatory statements against the Prophet which led to a huge furore demanding action against him.

He was taken into custody on the same day, however, he was released on Tuesday after the court returned his remand application and ordered that he be released forthwith.

A first information report (FIR) was registered against him at the Dabeerpura Police Station under sections 153a, 295, and 505 of the Indian Penal Code.

The party said that his remarks were against the party's line and suspended T Raja Singh. The suspension letter issued to him read, 'You have expressed views contrary to the Party's position on various matters, which is in clear violation of Rule XXV. 10 (a) of the constitution of the Bharatiya Janata Party.'

The suspension letter written by the head of the disciplinary committee Om Pathak stated, 'I have been directed to convey to you that pending further inquiry, you are suspended from the party and from your responsibilities/assignments if any, with immediate effect. Please also show cause within 10 days from the date of this notice as to why should you not be expelled from the party. Your detailed reply must reach the undersigned no later than 2nd of September 2022.'

Earlier the party had suspended its national spokesperson Nupur Sharma for commenting against the prophet and expelled Delhi leader Naveen Jindal for similar remarks.   -- ANI

12:40   EC sends its view on Hemant Soren's disqualification to governor
The Election Commission has sent its opinion to Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais on a plea seeking that Chief Minister Hemant Soren be disqualified as an MLA for violating electoral laws by extending a mining lease to himself, sources said on Thursday.

The opinion was sent to the Jharkhand Raj Bhavan in a sealed cover this morning, they said.

The Jharkhand governor had referred the matter to the poll panel.

The BJP, the petitioner in the case, has sought Soren's disqualification for violating section 9 A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which deals with disqualification for government contracts.

Under Article 192 of the Constitution, if any question arises as to whether a member of a House of the legislature of a state has become subject to any of the disqualifications, the question shall be referred to the governor whose decision shall be final.

"Before giving any decision on any such question, the governor shall obtain the opinion of the Election Commission and shall act according to such opinion," it reads.

While dealing with such cases, the poll panel functions as a quasi-judicial body.

12:22   Review of PMLA verdict: SC notice to Centre
The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to examine a plea seeking a review of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) verdict which upheld the Enforcement Directorate's powers, including those relating to arrest, and sought response from the Centre on the issue.

A bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana said prima facie two issues, including not providing Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR), requires reconsideration.

The top court on Wednesday had allowed an application of Congress MP Karti Chidambaram seeking an open court hearing of his petition to review the top court's last month's verdict upholding the sweeping powers of the ED relating to arrest, investigation, and attachment of property under the PMLA Act.

In its July 27 verdict, the apex court has said that the direction under Section 8(4) for taking possession of the property in question before a formal order of confiscation is passed should be an exception and not a rule.

Section 8(4) allows the ED to take possession of the attached property at the stage of confirmation of provisional attachment made by the adjudicating authority.   -- PTI

11:51   Delhi HC rejects pleas by WhatsApp, Facebook against CCI order
A division bench of the Delhi high court dismissed the petitions of WhatsApp and Facebook challenging a Competition Commission of India (CCI) order calling for an investigation into the messaging apps' new privacy policy.

The bench of Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad on Thursday, while dismissing both appeals moved by Whatsapp and Facebook, refused to further extend the stay granted on notices issued to messaging apps by CCI.

The bench said that the appeals were devoid of merits.

The bench had kept the order reserved on July 25, 2022, after the completion of the submissions by all sides.

Appearing for Facebook Inc Senior Advocate Mukul Rohtagi submitted that because Facebook is the formal owner of WhatsApp and the platform is said to share its data with Facebook (parent company) doesn't mean that it is a necessary party to investigate.

While opposed to the CCI probe against Facebook, Rohatgi further argued that there is no prima facie material available with the CCI to proceed with investigating it while conducting the investigation of WhatsApp's new privacy policy.

The division bench was hearing the petitions of WhatsApp and Facebook challenging the single bench, which had dismissed Facebook and WhatsApp petitions.

11:13   Baltimore shooting leaves 1 dead, 6 injured
One person died and six others sustained injuries in an apparent targeted shooting in the US state of Maryland on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said one victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by medical personnel.

All of the victims are adult males.

Witnesses reported that the suspect vehicle is a 4-door silver Lexus sedan.

'On August 24, 2022, at approximately 12.24 pm, Northwest District officers were summoned to the intersection of Shirley Avenue and Park Heights Avenue to investigate a reported shooting,' the Baltimore police said in a statement posted on Facebook.

'When officers arrived at the scene, they learned multiple victims were shot at the location. Two victims were located at the scene. Five victims suffering from gunshot wounds walked into area hospitals seeking treatment,' it added.

Addressing a press conference, Baltimore Police Chief Michael Harrison said that the shooting was a targeted one.

"When you get out of a vehicle and open fire indiscriminately on a large group of people, that appears that all of them are targeted," Harrison was quoted as saying by Fox News.

"Once again, bright afternoon, in broad daylight, the brazenness of these offenders to pull up, get out of a car and then open fire on a group of people minding their own business is unconscionable," he added.

The Police said that homicide investigators were called to the scene and assumed control over the investigation.   -- ANI

10:53   Indian American hiker swept away in floods found dead
A 29-year-old Indian-American female hiker, who got swept away in a flash flood last week at the Zion National Park in the US state of Utah, has been found dead, according to a senior official from the park.

Jetal Agnihotri of Tucson, Arizona, went missing on August 19 when flash floods swept multiple hikers off their feet, forcing park rangers and officials to launch rescue operations, CBS News reported on Tuesday.

Agnihotri's body was found on Tuesday in the Zion national park's Virgin River after a thorough rescue operation by the rangers, park superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh said in a statement.

"Our deepest sympathy goes out to the friends and family of Jetal Agnihotri," the statement said.

Zion National Park is among the United States' most visited recreation areas even though it frequently becomes hazardous and is put under flood warnings by the National Weather Service, the report said.

Floods can create danger for experienced hikers and climbers as well as the many novices who have flocked to the park since the pandemic bolstered an outdoor recreation boom.

Despite warnings, flash flooding routinely traps people in the park's slot canyons, which are as narrow as windows in some spots and hundreds of feet deep, the report said.

The BJP has challenged the AAP to reveal the names of those who allegedly contacted its MLAs with an offer to switch sides and charged that the Kejriwal-led party is trying hard to divert attention from the Delhi government's liquor 'scam'.   -- PTI

09:57   PMLA case: Jacqueline asks why Nora is witness
Bollywood Actress Jacqueline Fernandez in a plea before the Appellate Authority of PMLA clearly stated that it is surprising that like her some other celebrities, notably, Norah Fatehi was also conned by main accused Sukesh Chandrashekhar in the Rs 200 crore extortion case.

She and other celebrities who received gifts from the main accused Sukesh Chandrashekhar are made witnesses whereas she is sought to be dragged as an accused.

She further stated that the Fixed Deposits, attached vide the impugned order, have no nexus with a crime nor the Fixed Deposits are created by using the alleged proceeds of crime.

The deposits are from the actor's 'own legitimate of income and much before in time from even knowing that the main accused Chandrashekhar even existed in this world'.

Jacquline stated that she has always cooperated with the investigation agencies and attended all the summons till date.

'She has handed over all the information to the best of her ability to the ED. The agencies have failed to appreciate that she was cheated and conned into this matter. She is a victim of the modus operandi adopted by the main accused Chandrasekhar. Taking the entire prosecution case to be true for the sake of arguments, even then, no case is made out against her under the scheme of PMLA or any other law in force. This is a case of malafide prosecution,' her plea stated.

Jacqueline in her plea before Appellant Authority also added that in the present case, at the best, the allegation against her is that she is the 'Recipient of the Gifts' and the record and the statement relied upon the authority itself clearly show that she was coerced, conned and forced into receiving the said gift.

People other than her who received such gifts are made witnesses in the case.

Jacqueline has moved Appellant Authority challenging Adjudicating Authority order confirming provisional attachment of certain movable properties of her, to the extent of Rs.7,12,24,767/- by freezing the Fixed Deposits with her Banks.

For this attachment, the brief reason given by the Adjudicating Authority is that 'being a foreign national, there is every likelihood that she may leave the country and POC may not be available for confiscation at the time of completion of the trial'.

The ED in its recent supplementary chargesheet filed in the Rs 200 crore extortion case against conman Sukesh Chandrashekar in a Delhi Court has mentioned the name of Bollywood actor Jacqueline Fernandez as an accused.

The chargesheet has been filed before Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh last week.

The court fixed the date August 31 for argument on cognisance point.

She is named as an acceder in the chargesheet first time in the case. Jacqueline Fernandez has been summoned by ED several times in the matter for the purpose of investigation.

ED's earlier chargesheet did not mentioned her name as an accused but mentioned the detail of the statement recorded by Bollywood actors Jacqueline Fernandez and Nora Fatehi in the matter.

According to ED, Sukesh was confronted with Jacqueline on 20th Oct 2021. Jacqueline Fernandez stated that Sukash Chandrasekhar had arranged private jet trips and her hotel stay on different occasions for herself.

Statements of Nora Fatehi were recorded under section 50 of PMLA, 2002 on 13.09.2021 and 14.10.2021 wherein she stated that she got a booking for a charity event and during the event, she was gifted a Gucci Bag and one iPhone by Leena Paulose.

(Wife of Chandrashekhar) Noora further stated that Leena Paulose had called her husband and put the phone on the speaker where he thanked her and said that they were her fans.

She then announced that they were going to gift her a brand new BMW car as a token of love and generosity.

According to ED, during the investigation, searches were conducted at various places linked to Sukesh Chandrashekar and his associates.

During the search, 16 high-end vehicles were seized under section 17 PMLA and these cars are either in the name of firms of Leena Paulose or in the name of third parties. It is further submitted that it has emerged that Sukesh knowingly created the structure for layering and transferring proceeds of crime and thus, actively participated in the process of money laundering.   -- ANI

09:10   Action over missile incident 'inadequate': Pak
Pakistan has rejected India's action over the March 9 accidental firing of a supersonic missile that landed in its territory and demanded a joint probe.

The services of three officers of the Indian Air Force were terminated on August 23 after a Court of Inquiry (CoI) found that deviation from the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) by them led to the accidental firing of the missile.

The Foreign Office in a late Wednesday night statement said Pakistan has seen India's announcement of the findings of an internal CoI regarding the 'incident of firing of a rogue supersonic missile' into its territory and the decision to terminate the services of three IAF officers reportedly found responsible for the reckless incident.

'Pakistan categorically rejects India's purported closure of the highly irresponsible incident and reiterates its demand for a joint probe,' it said.

'As expected, the measures taken by India in the aftermath of the incident and the subsequent findings and punishments handed by the so-called internal Court of Inquiry are totally unsatisfactory, deficient and inadequate.'

It alleged that India has not only failed to respond to Pakistan's demand for a joint inquiry but has also evaded the questions raised by Pakistan regarding the command and control system in place in India, the safety and security protocols and the 'reason for India's delayed admission of the missile launch'.

It said systemic loopholes and technical lapses of serious nature in handling of strategic weapons 'cannot be covered up beneath the veneer of individual human error'.

'If indeed India has nothing to hide, it must accept Pakistan's demand for a joint probe in the spirit of transparency,' it demanded.

It further said the 'imprudent Indian action' of March 9 had 'jeopardised' the peace and security environment of the entire region while 'Pakistan showed exemplary restraint' which was a testament of its systemic maturity and abiding commitment to peace as a responsible nuclear state.

Pakistan reiterated its demand that the Indian government must immediately provide specific responses to the queries raised by Islamabad after the incident and accedes to its call for a joint probe.  -- PTI

09:03   Plaint filed in Bihar court against Muslim minister for visiting temple
A complaint petition was filed on Wednesday in a court in Bihar's Muzaffarpur against IT Minister Mohammad Israel Mansuri for visiting the Vishnupad temple in Gaya.

Muzaffarpur-based social activist Chandra Kishore Parashar filed the complaint seeking an FIR be registered against the minister for 'hurting religious sentiments of Hindus'.

'My client, in his complaint, said that the minister, being a Muslim, should not have visited the Vishnupad temple as only those who follow the Sanatana Dharma are allowed to visit the temple.

'My client sought an FIR be registered against the minister for hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus. The court will hear the matter on September 2,' Ravindra Kumar Singh, lawyer of Parashar, told reporters in Muzaffarpur.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed dismay over the controversy around Mansuri, his cabinet colleague, visiting the temple. Kumar blamed the controversy on 'divisive' politics of the Bharatiya Janata Party, his former ally, while talking to reporters on the assembly premises in Patna.

"They (BJP) have been wanting to divide the society by raising non issues. What is their grouse? Have their ministers not visited temples along with me?" asked the Janata Dal-United supremo.

Mansuri, a Pasmanda Muslim, had accompanied the CM on his tour of Gaya earlier this week during which they offered prayers at the Vishnupad temple.

BJP leaders had fulminated, citing a notice board on the premises that says 'only followers of Sanatana Dharma' will be allowed to enter.   -- PTI
