Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with his counterparts from Australia and Japan on Friday attended the first in-person meeting of Quad leaders hosted by US President Joe Biden during which they plan to discuss issues like climate change, Covid-19 pandemic and challenges in the Indo Pacific, amidst China's growing military presence in the strategic region.

In November 2017, India, Japan, the US and Australia gave shape to the long-pending proposal of setting up the Quad to develop a new strategy to keep the critical sea routes in the Indo-Pacific free of any influence.

At the invitation of President Biden, Prime Minister Modi and his counterparts Scott Morrison from Australia and Yoshihide Suga from Japan have gathered in the American capital for the first-ever in-person Quad summit at the White House.

In his opening remarks, President Biden said the four democracies have come together to take on common challenges from Covid to climate. "We know how to get things done and are up to the challenge," he said.

Prime Minister Modi said he was "confident that our participation in Quad will establish peace and prosperity in the world."

During the summit, the four leaders are expected to discuss promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific, address the climate crisis and advance practical cooperation on areas like combatting Covid-19.

Ahead of the summit, the White House said that the Quad leaders would nnounce a new working group on space, a supply chain initiative and a 5G deployment and diversification effort apart from discussing issues like challenges in the Indo Pacific, climate change and Covid-19 pandemic during their historic meeting.

Quad leaders are also planning to roll out vaccine deliverables and announce a series of measures in the field of healthcare and infrastructure sector, officials said.

India, the US and several other world powers have been talking about the need to ensure a free, open and thriving Indo-Pacific against the backdrop of China's rising military manoeuvring in the region.

China claims nearly all of the disputed South China Sea, though Taiwan, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Vietnam all claim parts of it.

Beijing has built artificial islands and military installations in the South China Sea.

Ahead of the Quad summit, Prime Minister Modi separately met his Australian and Japanese counterparts on Thursday and they reaffirmed the importance of maritime security towards the realisation of a "free and open" Indo-Pacific.

11:55   Sensex hits 60K in just eight months!
It took just eight months for the BSE benchmark Sensex to cover the journey from 50,000 in January this year to scale the unprecedented 60,000 mark for the first time on Friday.

The strong bull rally on the Dalal Street has seen the benchmark index rising 10,000 points after hitting the 50,000 mark in intra-day trade on January 21, 2021.

"The roaring bull market is continued in the Indian market with climbing all walls of worries where Sensex has crossed the new milestone of 60,000. We are in a classical bull market like the 2003-2007 phase where this bull run is likely to continue for the next 2-3 years," said Santosh Meena, Head of Research, Swastika Investmart.

However, he put a word of caution after a parabolic move in last few days because short-term correction can't be ruled out in coming days.

This year has so far belonged to the bulls as markets have scripted many historic feats. The benchmark index has gained over 25 per cent so far this year.

"Sensex mounted the 60K mark as risk appetite improved after fears surrounding Evergrande debt crisis eased. BSE found almost 60 per cent of the stocks advancing in the first hour, said Anand James, Chief Market Strategist at Geojit Financial Services said.

But he remains watchful of markets weighing in rate hike prospects as US treasury yields have begun to firm up, following Fed's taper signals.

09:40   UK backbench MPs debate Kashmir motion, India condemns language
Members of Parliament from the UK's All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Kashmir have tabled a motion on Human rights in Kashmir for a debate in the House of Commons.

It drew a strong reaction from India which said any assertion made in any forum on a subject related to an integral part of the country needs to be duly substantiated with authentic verifiable facts.

The Minister for Asia in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Amanda Milling, responded to the debate on Thursday by reiterating the UK government's unchanged stance on Kashmir as a bilateral issue.

The government takes the situation in Kashmir very seriously but it's for India and Pakistan to find a lasting political solution, taking into account the wishes of the Kashmiri people.

It's not for the UK to prescribe a solution or to act as a mediator, said Milling.

The Indian government expressed its dismay at some of the language used by participating MPs in the Backbench Debate, specifically Pakistani-origin Labour MP Naz Shah.

A minister from the Indian High Commission in London condemned the attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and highlighted Kashmir's status as an integral part of India.

It is with sadness that the High Commission of India notes that an august institution of a fellow democracy has been misused today to level abuse against the elected leader of the largest practising democracy in the world, the minister said, referring to Shah's remarks on the 2002 Gujarat riots.

As on previous occasions, the High Commission of India reiterates that any assertion made in any forum on a subject related to an integral part of India needs to be duly substantiated with authentic verifiable facts, the minister added.

09:12   Blinken discusses Afghanistan with Pakistan
US Secretary of State Tony Blinken has met with the visiting Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on the sidelines of the 76th UN General Assembly and discussed the way forward in Afghanistan, stressing on the importance of the countries to work together on the issue.

A lot to focus on, starting with Afghanistan and the importance of our countries working together and going forward on Afghanistan, Blinken said during his meeting with Qureshi on Thursday in New York.

Blinken appreciated the work that Pakistan has done to facilitate the departure of American citizens who wish to leave Afghanistan as well as others. According to State Department Spokesperson Ned Price, the two leaders discussed the way forward in Afghanistan.

Blinken reiterated the importance of coordinating our diplomatic engagement and facilitating the departure of those wishing to leave Afghanistan.

The Secretary noted that the United States appreciates Pakistan's support and assistance with both of these efforts, Price said.

Qureshi said, "I thought a time would come where we'd be talking beyond Afghanistan, but it seems Afghanistan is there, we can't wish it away, and we have to find a way of collectively working to achieve our common objective, which is peace and stability," Qureshi told reporters.

The Taliban swept across Afghanistan last month, seizing control of almost all key towns and cities in the backdrop of withdrawal of the US forces that began on May 1. On August 15, the capital city of Kabul fell to the insurgents.

08:41   PM thanks Kamala Harris, invites her to India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that United States Vice President Kamala Harris is a 'source of inspiration' for so many people around the world, as he expressed gratitude to her for being so warm and natural during their conversation when India was going through a devastating second wave of COVID-19.

Prime Minister Modi made comments during a joint press appearance with Harris at the White House.

'Your being elected as the Vice President of America has been such an important and historic event. You are the source of inspiration for so many people around the world,' Modi said.

Harris, 56, is the first-ever person of Indian origin to be elected as the vice-president of the United States.

'I am so confident that Under President Joe Biden and your leadership, our bilateral relationship will touch new heights,' he said.

The prime minister also extended an invitation to Harris to visit India.

'Continuing on your journey of victory, Indians would also want you to continue that in India and wait for you to come to India and therefore, I extend to you an invitation to visit India,' he said.

Recalling his conversation with Harris in June during the second wave of pandemic in India, he said, 'A few months ago, we had an opportunity to talk to each other over the phone. We had a detailed discussion at that time and the way you spoke to me so warmly and naturally, I will always remember that.'

'It was a very difficult time. India was confronted with the second wave of the pandemic but like a family, the sense of kinship and so warmly you extended a helping hand.

'The words that you chose when you spoke to me, I will always remember that and I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart,' he said.

'Like a true friend, you had given a message of cooperation and full of sensitivity and immediately we found that the US government, corporate sector and the Indian community all came together to help India,' he said.

Harris was born to two immigrant parents -- a Black father and an Indian mother.

Her father, Donald Harris, was from Jamaica, and her mother Shyamala Gopalan was a cancer researcher and civil rights activist from Chennai.  -- PTI
