An additional chief metropolitan magistrate court in Mumbai has issued summons to actress Alia Bhatt, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali and two writers regarding a criminal defamation case connected to the upcoming film Gangubai Kathiawadi.

They have been asked to present themselves before the court on May 21. While Sanjay is the director of the film, Alia is playing the titular role in the film.
The defamation case has been filed by Babu Ravji Shah, who claims to be the adopted son of Gangubai Kathiawadi. The film is based on one chapter of Hussain Zaidi's book Mafia Queens of Mumbai.

Babu Ravji Shah claims that the chapters on Gangubai Kathiawadi in the book were defamatory, tarnished her reputation and infringed upon the right to privacy and self-respect of his deceased mother. The film by Bhansali in which Kathiawadi's role is played by Bhatt is based on the book and thus the defamatory suit is filed against the filmmaker as well as the actress.
