A day after the Republic Day violence in Delhi, Police chief S N Shrivastava says that farmer leaders betrayed and did not follow conditions set for tractor parade.

"Some farmer leaders like Satnam Singh Pannu, Darshan Pal gave inflammatory speeches, thereafter protesters broke barricades," the police chief said.

"We held five rounds of meetings with farmer leaders before tractor rally.

"Keeping in mind the interests of the security of the people of Delhi, it was decided that some terms and conditions be imposed, it was given to them in writing -- the rally was to last from 12pm -5pm, it was to be led by farmer leaders and leaders must accompany their groups," he said.

"Farmer unions did not follow conditions set for tractor rally that was supposed to be held from 12 pm to 5 pm," Shrivastava said.

"Farmer leaders were also involved in violence that broke out during tractor rally," he said.

"Police had many options, but remained calm. As many as 394 police personnel were injured, 30 police vehicles damaged in the violence," the Delhi Police Commissioner said.

"Those involved in violence during tractor rally will not be spared, farmer leaders will be questioned," the Delhi Police chief said, adding that they are identifying culprits through CCTV footage, face recognition system.

"Cops dealt with situation in proper way that is why no one was killed due to police action during tractor rally violence," he said.   -- PTI
