A petition has been filed in the Karnataka high court against the constitutional validity of Section 2(c)(i) of the Contempt of Courts Act 1971 by journalists N Ram and Krishna Prasad, former Union minister Arun Shourie and activist and advocate Prashant Bhushan.

Section 2 (c)(i) criminalises the publication of anything that 'tends to lower the dignity or authority of any court'.

The petitioners have argued that the section is 'incompatible with basic values of the Constitution, and is violative of Article 19 (1)(a) and Article 14, apart from being incurably vague and manifestly artbitrary'.

On Tuesday a bench led by Chief Justice Abhay S Okay issued notices to the central government, and the matter is likely to be listed for hearing on February 22, reports livelaw.in here.
