Within hours of the Uttarakhand glacier collapse, videos of the catastrophe taken by locals began to emerge, as did satellite images captured in the aftermath.

They've provided vital clues for researchers who have been poring over the images and data trying to pinpoint exactly what sent a torrent of water down the vast valleys, leaving bridges, dams and buildings shattered in its wake.
