23:54   Expert panel to discuss booster jabs on Friday
The subject expert committee under the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation will hold the first meeting on Friday regarding the COVID-19 booster dose, said sources on Thursday.

Recently, Serum Institute of India has filed an application with the Drugs Controller General of India regarding approval for a booster dose of Covishield.

SII cites that there is adequate stock of the COVID vaccine in the country now and a demand for a booster shot is there due to the emergence of new coronavirus variants.

Serum Institute is the first vaccine manufacturing company in India to apply for approval for Covishield as a booster dose.

The SEC meeting in this regard will start at noon on Friday.

Many experts have also recommended booster doses in India especially after the emergence of new highly transmissible COVID-19 variant Omicron.

But the government has not taken any decision so far. -- ANI

23:44   28 students fall ill after consuming 'chikki' at Chhattisgarh school
As many as 28 students of a government primary school in Chhattisgarh's Durg district fell ill after eating chikki (a sweet snack) distributed there and were briefly hospitalised,  officials said on Thursday.

The incident took place on Wednesday and all affected children were  discharged from a hospital here after being kept under observation for sometime, they said, even as the state government ordered an inquiry.

Soya-made chikki were given to students (as part of a government scheme) at the primary school located in Koliyapuri village, district education officer Pravas Singh Baghel said.

As per preliminary information, at least 137 students of Classes I to V, who were present on the day, had consumed the snack and of them 28, belonging to grades 3 and 4, later complained of abdominal pain and vomiting, he said.

The students, mostly girls, were immediately shifted to the district hospital in Durg in ambulances, Baghel said.

"Of the 28, 20 students were discharged after preliminary medical examination, while the others were kept under observation for sometime before they were also sent home," a doctor of the hospital said.

The health condition of all of them was normal, the doctor said.

A preliminary report of the block education officer on the matter suggested the children were given chikki in excess, resulting in the illness, an official statement said.

However, samples of chikki, supplied by the state's seed corporation, have been sent to a laboratory for testing, the statement said. -- PTI

21:24   HC quashes case against Mithun linking him with poll violence
The Calcutta high court on Thursday quashed a police case alleging that cine star Mithun Chakraborty's uttering dialogues from his films at a public meeting here had caused political violence in West Bengal during the assembly elections held earlier this year.

At the public meeting on March 7, Chakraborty had said: "Marbo ekhane, laash porbe shoshaney" (I will hit you here and your body will fall in the crematorium) and "Ek choboley chobi'  (just one snake bite and you will turn into a photograph), his dialogues from two popular Bengali films.

He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on that day.

The court observed that since Chakraborty did not deny that he uttered the said dialogues, any further police investigation of the present case will be an unnecessary and vexatious exercise.

Justice Kausik Chanda quashed a police case filed by a ruling Trinamool Congress worker against the film star registered with the Maniktala police station in Kolkata and pending before the court of additional chief judicial magistrate at Sealdah.

Observing that the petitioner is a popular matinee idol, Justice Chanda said the involvement of film stars in politics in the country is nothing new.
"It is also well known that film stars try to entertain and attract voters by saying cinematic dialogues in political rallies. The case in hand is no exception," the judge said.

The court noted that Chakraborty admitted that on many occasions, on public demand, he has said those dialogues in different functions to entertain people.

"The two dialogues in question are fundamentally funny, hilarious, and entertaining; it is futile to try to find the elements of hate speech in them," the court said. -- PTI

20:16   Kangana moves HC to quash FIR over her Sikh post
Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut has approached the Bombay high court seeking to quash a First Information Report registered against her last month by the Mumbai police following a complaint by a Sikh organisation.

Ranaut portrayed the farmers' protest on Delhi borders against the controversial farm laws as a 'Khalistani movement' in an Instagram post on November 21, the complainants had alleged. Following which, a case for `hurting religious sentiments' was registered against her by the police.

In her post, the actor had referred to "Khalistani terrorists" and invoked former prime minister late Indira Gandhi who "crushed" them.

The actor's petition, filed last month through advocate Rizwan Siddiquee, contended that her post was misconstrued and she had no intention of hurting the Sikh community's sentiments.

The post was not against farmers but against a banned organisation, and it was within her fundamental right to free speech, the actor, known for making controversial statements, said in the plea.

The HC should "protect her legitimate rights and liberties by quashing the FIR," said the petition, which is yet to be listed for hearing.

19:55   First responder recalls encounter with late CDS
When an Army official in severe distress asked for "some water," from him, A Sivakumar had no idea the man was the country's top soldier and its first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Bipin Rawat, who would possibly later succumb to injuries sustained in a helicopter crash in the vicinity.

Sivakumar, a social worker, was among the first respondents who reached the accident site where the Mi-17VH carrying the late CDS, his wife Madhulika Rawat and 12 others crashed on Wednesday, killing 13 of them, including the General while there is a lone survivor.

A "trained first respondent," Sivakumar said he rushed to the spot following a phone call from a relative even as the copter was in flames, making it "clear we cannot save everyone."

Three of them had jumped out of the burning helicopter and those in the area were scampering to find resources to save the injured, Sivakumar said, adding, they managed to rescue them one by one and take them to the ambulance.

"We saw three of them were alive. We used blankets and other available material to move them even as a police inspector came... as we were engaged in trying to shift them from there, I told the second person to remain calm and relaxed as rescuers had arrived. He then asked me "some water please." But I realised that by the time I could oblige his request, we could as well move him," to safety, Sivakumar told PTI.

The third person could hear what the rescuers spoke but could not respond, he added.

Later, an Army officer showed a picture of Rawat to Sivakumar and revealed who he was.

"I was upset I could not give water immediately to such a high ranking person of the country," Sivakumar said, adding, all of Rawat's belongings were later retrieved.

Sivakumar said police and defence officials have already held enquiries with him.

19:45   Forex outflows: Rupee sinks to 16-month low at 75.60 against dollar
The rupee on Thursday declined by 10 paise to settle at a 16-month low of 75.60 against the US dollar amid foreign fund outflows from equities and a firm greenback in the overseas markets.

Besides, concerns over the impact of new COVID variant on the global economy also weighed on investor sentiments, traders said.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local currency opened at 75.45 against the greenback. The local unit soon pared its initial gains and touched a low of 75.60 against the US dollar.

The rupee finally settled at its day's low of 75.60, down by 10 paise over its previous close. Previously, the rupee had closed at this level on July 1, 2020.

On Wednesday, the Indian rupee fell to a near two-month low of 75.50 against the US dollar, as RBI's bi-monthly monetary policy decision failed to enthuse forex market participants.

"The Indian Rupee ended weaker against the US Dollar on Thursday on concerns about persistent foreign outflows from local equities and as oil prices extended their climb," Sriram Iyer, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities said.

Currently foreign investors are net sellers of Indian equities in all trading sessions since November 18, and have withdrawn almost USD 5 billion during this period, Iyer said.

Meanwhile, oil prices were lifted by optimism that the Omicron mutation might not have a significant impact on oil demand.

The Reserve Bank of India on Wednesday kept borrowing costs at a record-low for the ninth consecutive time, as it decided to continue supporting economic growth amid uncertainty over the impact of the Omicron strain on the economy.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.20 per cent up at 96.08.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, declined 0.46 per cent to USD 75.47 per barrel.

On the domestic equity market front, the BSE Sensex ended 157.45 points or 0.27 per cent higher at 58,807.13, while the broader NSE Nifty rose 47.10 points or 0.27 per cent to 17,516.85.

Foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital market on Wednesday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 579.27 crore, as per exchange data.

"Rupee consolidated in a narrow range despite gains in the dollar against its major crosses. In line with expectation, the RBI held rates unchanged and maintained its stance accommodative. RBI said that it would endeavour to broaden growth impulses, encourage credit flow to productive sectors," said Gaurang Somaiyaa, Forex & Bullion Analyst, Motilal Oswal Financial Services.

From the US, market participants will be a little cautious ahead of the important inflation number that will be released on Friday.

"At the same time, consumer sentiment numbers will be released from the US and better-than-estimated data could extend gains for the dollar. We expect the USDINR (spot) to trade sideways with a positive bias and quote in the range of 75.05 and 75.80," Somaiyaa said.

18:59   Sharjeel Imam gets bail in 2019 Jamia violence case
A Delhi court on Thursday granted bail to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Sharjeel Imam in a case related to alleged violence at Jamia Millia Islamia University in December 2019.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Dinesh Kumar admitted him on bail on furnishing Rs 25,000 bond with one surety of like amount.

"Considering the nature of the offence, and the fact that he was not arrested during the investigation, the [bail] application is allowed," the judge ordered.

The incident of violence in the varsity had occurred concerning student protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in December 2019.

The FIR under which he is an accused involves offences such as rioting, conspiracy, attempt to commit culpable homicide, voluntarily obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions, and assault under the Indian Penal Code.

Imam will, however, remain in jail as he is accused in three other cases related to violence in Delhi.

In October, the court had denied bail to Imam bail in connection with allegedly delivering an inflammatory speech and inciting violence during the CAA-NRC protests in 2019, saying free speech cannot be exercised at the cost of communal peace and harmony.

Besides this case, Imam is also accused of being the "masterminds" of the February 2020 riots, which had left 53 people dead and over 700 injured. He has been booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

He was also arrested in another case under UAPA and sedition for his alleged speeches at two universities in 2019, where he allegedly threatened to cut off Assam and the rest of the Northeast from India.

17:41   ED quizzes Jacqueline Fernandez for 2nd day
Actor Jacqueline Fernandez appeared before the Enforcement Directorate here on Thursday for the second consecutive day in connection with a money laundering investigation involving alleged conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar and others.

The 36-year-old actor had spent about eight hours at the agency's office on Wednesday as she was questioned and her statement was recorded in multiple sessions under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The agency is continuing with the questioning on Thursday, official sources said.

Fernandez has been grilled by the Enforcement Directorate at least twice early this year in this case during which she was also confronted with Chandrashekhar.

The agency suspects she is a "beneficiary" of the proceeds of crime allegedly generated by Chandrashekhar after coning and extorting money from some high-profile people.

An associate of the actor was also grilled by the agency on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the actor had earlier said she was testifying before the agency as a witness.

"Jacqueline Fernandez is being called to testify as a witness by the ED. She has duly recorded her statements and in future will also be completely cooperating with the agency in the investigations.

"Jacqueline also categorically denies alleged slanderous statements made about relationship with the involved couple," the spokesperson had said in a statement in October.

On December 5, The ED 5 had stopped Fernandez from flying abroad through the Mumbai airport. It asked her to remain in the country as she may be required to join the probe.

15:53   Identifying bodies tough due to severity of crash
The Indian army said it is taking all possible measures for the identification of the bodies in the chopper crash. The severity of the crash has made identification difficult.

"Close family members of all the deceased personnel are arriving at Delhi. All necessary assistance and support are being provided," read the statement of Indian Army.

13:34   Shaurya Chakra survivor is from family of heroes
Group Captain Varun Singh, the lone survivor of the chopper crash near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu, who was conferred with the Shaurya Chakra, comes from a family that serves in the armed forces.

He was conferred the Shaurya Chakra in August for averting a possible mid-air accident after his Tejas light combat aircraft suffered a major technical glitch last year.

Singh is now battling for life at a military hospital in Wellington and will be shifted to a hospital in Bengaluru.

His father, Colonel (retd) KP Singh had served in the Army Air Defence (AAD). His younger son Tanuj, is Lt Commander in the Navy.

Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika and 11 armed forces personnel were killed in the Mi-17V5 helicopter crash in one of the biggest air accidents involving top military officials.

"Group Captain Varun Singh is on life support in the military hospital at Wellington and all efforts are being made to save his life," Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said while apprising Parliament on the crash.

Group Captain Singh was on board the Russian-made chopper as the liaison officer for the visit of Gen Rawat, India's senior-most military officer, to the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington.

He is currently serving as an instructor at the prestigious institute.

Group Captain Singh was conferred with the Shaurya Chakra for displaying exemplary composure and skill when his Tejas aircraft developed the technical snag on October 12 last year.

"Despite being in extreme physical and mental stress in an extreme life-threatening situation, he maintained exemplary composure and recovered the aircraft, thereby exhibiting exceptional flying skill," this award citation said.

Officials said his aircraft experienced a total loss of control with vicious manoeuvring and under such a scenario, the pilot was at liberty to abandon the aircraft. They said he evaluated the gravity of the situation and decided to bring back the aircraft safely.

"Faced with a potential hazard to his own life, he displayed extraordinary courage and skill to control and safely land the fighter aircraft saving hundreds of crore," the award citation said.

12:22   Afternoon is best time to get your Covid vaccine
In other news, studies on the Covid vaccine, which as we all know, remains ongoing.

Antibody levels are higher when people receive the COVID-19 vaccine in the afternoon as compared to the morning, according to an observational study.

The research, published in the Journal of Biological Rhythms, demonstrates that our internal 24-hour circadian clock regulates many aspects of physiology, including the response to infectious disease and vaccination.

"Our observational study provides proof of concept that time of day affects immune response to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, findings that may be relevant for optimising the vaccine's efficacy," said study co-senior author Elizabeth Klerman from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), US.

The researchers noted that symptoms of some diseases and the action of numerous medications vary by time of day.

The latest study evaluated antibody levels after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination among 2,190 healthcare workers in the UK.

Blood samples were collected from asymptomatic hospital workers at the time of vaccination.

The researchers created a model to investigate the effect on antibody levels based on time of day of vaccination, vaccine type, age, sex, and the number of days post-vaccination.
\
They found that antibody responses were higher in general for everyone who was vaccinated later in the day.

The antibody responses were also higher in those who received the Pfizer mRNA vaccine, in women, and in younger people, in addition to the effect of time of day of vaccination, the researchers said.

The study contrasts with earlier studies in elderly men that reported higher anti-influenza titers in the morning.

"The SARS-CoV-2 vaccine and the influenza vaccine have different mechanisms of action from each other, and antibody response may vary greatly depending on whether the immune system recognises the pathogen from earlier infections, such as influenza, or whether it is confronted by a novel virus," said Klerman.
