Assam CM directs police to withdraw FIR against Mizoram MP K Vanlalvena

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said he had directed state police to withdraw the FIR against Mizoram Rajya Sabha MP K Vanlalvena as a "goodwill gesture" after his "Mizoram counterpart Zoramthanga expressed his desire to settle the border dispute amicably".

However, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that cases against other police officers would be pursued over the July 26 border incident in which six Assam Police personnel were killed in firing and clashes.

"I have noted statements in media by Honble Mizoram CM Zoramthanga wherein he has expressed his desire to settle the border dispute amicably. Assam always wants to keep the spirit of North East alive. We are also committed to ensuring peace along our borders," Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted.

The development comes hours after the Mizoram government said it would relook at the FIR registered against Himant Biswa Sarma along with four senior Assam Police officers on charges of attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy over the clashes along the Assam-Mizoram border on July 26.

Mizoram Chief Secretary Lalnunmawia Chuaungo said he and Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga were not aware of the FIR registered against Himanta Biswa Sarma. "CM (Zoramthanga) and I were unaware. CM has told me to relook," Lalnunmawia Chuaungo said.
