Supreme Court stays yesterday's Allahabad High Court order, imposing lockdown in five cities in Uttar Pradesh. The Supreme Court bench today in its order also asked the state of Uttar Pradesh to submit before the state High Court its various steps and measures taken to control the pandemic, within a week.

The court granted interim stay on HC order directing UP govt to impose strict restrictions till April 26 in 5 cities amid COVID-19 surge. The SC takes note of UP govt submissions that it has taken steps to prevent spread of coronavirus.

Lockdown by judicial order may not be right approach, UP government tells SC. Allahabad HC order imposing lockdown in five cities will create immense administrative difficulties, the UP government says.

The Allahabad High Court had ordered a lockdown till April 26 in Lucknow, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Kanpur and Gorakhpur. The Yogi Adityanath-led government refused to enforce it last evening.

The Uttar Pradesh government had argued that locking down five cities by judicial order "may not be the right approach". It also said Allahabad High Court's order infringed upon the UP government's domain.
