Singer SP Balasubrahmanyam dies of Covid

Singer SP Balasubrahmanyam passed away at 1:04 pm today, announces his son SP Charan. He was 74.

The popular singer, admitted to MGM hospital in Chennai on August 5 after he tested positive for coronavirus, was put on the ECMO support, a heart-lung assistance machine.

The singer's close friend, actor Kamal Haasan, visited the hospital on Thursday night. 

Tamil Nadu resounded to prayers for his wellbeing, but after over a month-long struggle, the singer passed away this afternoon. 

S P Charan, his son has been sharing health updates about his father on social media and was optimistic these last few weeks. On Wednesday, he wrote on Instagram that S P Balasubrahmanyam was making "steady progress" and was undergoing physiotherapy. SPB was "eager to leave the hospital as early as possible."

However, SPB's condition deteriorated in the last 24 hours with the hospital putting him on maximum life support.
