Reacting sharply to MoS Health Ashwini Kumar Choubey's statement that the Centre does not have data on health workers who died due to Covid-19, the Indian Medical Association has shot off a scathing letter to the government.

In the letter, the IMA has accused the government of being indifferent to the sacrifice of doctors and health care workers due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"No nation has lost as many doctors and health care workers like India. To feign that this information doesnt merit the attention of the nation is abominable. If the government doesnt maintain the statistics of the total number of doctors and health care workers infected by Covid-19 and the statistics of how many of them sacrificed their life due to the pandemic, it loses the moral authority to administer the Epidemic Act 1897 and the Disaster Management Act," the IMA said in the letter.

Calling the government hypocrite, the IMA letter alleged that while on one hand, the government called health care workers corona warriors, on the other hand, it left the families of deceased doctors to fend for themselves.

The association has published a list of the doctors who died in the Covid-19 pandemic and has urged the government to provide support to the families of the deceased doctors.

"Their families and children deserve solace and solatium from the government," the IMA said in a press note issued on Wednesday.

The IMA has also recommended to the government to seek similar data from the representatives of nurses and other health care workers.
