In an important development, major political parties from the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir came together on October 15 to form the Peoples' Alliance for Gupkar Declaration, for the restoration of the special status of the erstwhile state as it existed before August 5 last year and also to initiate a dialogue between all stakeholders in the issue.

Among the leaders who attended the meeting at the residence of National Conference president Farooq Abdullah and attended by People's Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti, People's Conference chairman Sajad Lone, Peoples Movement leader Javaid Mir and Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami.

How did the political leaders manage to sink their differences -- notably the Abdullahs and Mufti, who have for long remained implacable political foes in the state?

In an interview to Rajdeep Sardesai for India Today TV, Omar Abdullah explains their compulsions in coming together.
