Mumbai police issues new order for renting out property

The Mumbai police has issued a new order making it a criminal offence under section 188 of the CrPC to let out or rent a property without police verification of the tenant. If the tenant is a foreigner, requisite details of the tenant including his passport, visa details etc should be furnished with the police.

The order comes into effect from today for a period of 60 days in .

The reason for this order, the office of the Commissioner of Police, states is to prevent terrorists and antisocial elements from using rented accommodation as hideouts for terrorism and anti-social activities like shootouts, bomb explosions or riots.
