The other epidemic that had struck Bombay: Plague

@IndiaHistorypic shares this image from the 1890s: The Ball Room of the Goverment House in Parel, Bombay, was converted into the Plague Ward.  In 1855 Bubonic Plague which originated in Yunnan  China spread across the world killing millions. 


In September 1896 the first case of Bubonic plague was detected in Mandvi. It spread rapidly to other parts of the city, and the death toll was estimated at 1,900 people per week through the rest of the year. Many people fled from Bombay at this time, and in the census of 1901, the population of the city had fallen to less than eight lakh.
