'The current crisis was the result of China reacting to the perception that India was stabbing it in the back by its move into territories China sees as off-limits to India. The unique timing of COVID-19, the context of the U.S.-Chinese strategic rivalry and China's self-perceived vulnerability all contributed to a sense of insecurity amongst officials in Beijing.
