UP to impose weekend lockdown

Uttar Pradesh is set to go for weekend lockdowns. Stringent restrictions to be put in force on every weekend.

Markets will be closed, public transport will be one-third of its capacity, and private offices will be shut too, while essential services will be exempted from the restrictions.

India saw the biggest daily jump in coronavirus cases on Sunday as 28,637 new infections were identified in the 24 hours since 8 am on Saturday, the union health ministry said.

The total case count is now just shy of 8.5 lakh at 8,49,553.

India also witnessed 551 deaths during the last 24-hour period, taking the total death toll to 22,674.
