Trump's India tour: Sabarmati Ashram says US president will visit

US President Donald Trump will travel to the Sabarmati Ashram -- Mahatma Gandhi's home between 1917 and 1930 -- when he arrives in Ahmedabad Monday to begin a two-day state visit, an ashram official said.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said earlier that the White House would take a call on whether Trump would visit the ashram. State officials have confirmed he will, the ashram said.

In recent years, President Xi Jinping of China, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan have all visited the Sabarmati Ashram with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Donald Trump's visit, his first to India as US president, is widely anticipated; he will travel to Ahmedabad, New Delhi and Agra.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised him a "memorable" welcome, and said his trip to India "will go a long way in further cementing the India-USA friendship".
