Union Home Minister Amit Shah says he 'never asked for imposing Hindi over other regional languages'.

"I had only requested for learning Hindi as the second language after one's mother tongue.

"I myself come from a non-Hindi state of Gujarat. If some people want to do politics, its their choice," Shah said.

On September 14, Hindi Diwas, Shah pitched for a common language for the country and said it is Hindi which is spoken the most and can unite the whole country.

'India has many languages and every language has its importance. But it is absolutely necessary that the entire country should have one language that becomes India's identity globally,' he said in a series of tweets in Hindi.

His remarks sparked protests by political parties in Tamil Nadu, including Bharatiya Janata Party ally All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa also said that Kannada is the principal language in the state and its importance would never be compromised.   -- with ANI inputs
