Maharashtra governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has opened consultations with the Centre on President's Rule in the state. Following this Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for a cabinet meeting just before his departure tomorrow for the BRICS summit in Brazil.

While Koshyari has recommended President's Rule in Maharashtra and sent a report on the same to the Centre, it is only after the Union Cabinet's ratification that Prez Rule can be imposed.

The governor has given the NCP till 8:30 pm to cobble up numbers and stake claim to form government. However, with no headway in talks between the NCP, Congress and the Shiv Sena, the governor has begun discussing the crisis in the state with the Centre. It is now unlikely the governor will call the Congress to stake claim. He has already called the BJP and Sena to stake claim, but neither has been able to show numbers.

In fact, a high-level delegation from the Congress is on its way to Mumbai to hold talks with NCP leader Sharad Pawar to firm the way ahead for government formation in the state.

The Shiv Sena has also approached Congress leader and Supreme Court lawyer Kapil Sibal for advice in case President's rule is imposed in the state before the expiry of the 8:30 pm deadline.
