A day after the Shiv Sena failed to muster the support of the NCP and Congress to end the impasse in Maharashtra, the Sharad Pawar-led party has been given time till 8.30pm today to express "willingness and ability to form government".

When asked on the Congress party's delay in agreeing with an alliance with the Shiv Sena, which is holding up government formation in Maharashtra,  Ajit Pawar of the NCP said, "Whatever decision will be taken will be taken collectively, so we were waiting for Congress response yesterday but it didn't come, we can't decide on it alone. There is no misunderstanding,we contested together and are together."

NCP Chief Sharad Pawar also said he will talk to the Congress. Reports say a Congress delegation was expected to meet Sharad Pawar in Mumbai, but that has now been cancelled and the Congress in fact has asked to come to Delhi for talks. Pawar has declined saying there is a meeting with NCP leaders at 11 am today.

Ajit Pawar added, "There should be stability in the govt...since 10 in morning till 7:30 pm Pawar and other senior leaders were looking up for letters of support but we didn't received them."

Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari had asked the Shiv Sena to prove that it has the numbers to stake claim, hours after its pre-poll partner and longtime ally BJP declined to form the government.

The Shiv Sena on Monday claimed that the NCP and Congress have agreed "in-principle" to back its government without the BJP in Maharashtra but failed to get letters of support from the political rivals before the deadline set by the Governor who rejected its plea for three more days to do so.
